Roleplaying 101/102 - easing new players in
Return To Top

After seeing Starstuff announce that her initial classes to assist new players in finding their way into multiplayer gaming would be on a regular monthly basis, I wonder if new players may enjoy a similar session which then talks about roleplaying in general in NWN/NWC in an open discussion forum with opportunities to do some improv roleplaying.

The idea is not to 'teach' how to roleplay the best - it is after all a subjective matter with everyones opinion varying on what they feel the best roleplayer traits are. Yet I am of the opinion that those players that fit into their roles best all have common traits - ranging from their effort in being creative, to possible use of carefully placed emotes to consideration of other players (and thus avoiding 'spotlighting', and many other things.. most of them rather subtle.

In fact there is so much, much of the advanced discussion is beyond the scope of a 101 class, but I thought it would be interesting (and fun!) to sit down with a group of new players and chat about the basics of what they feel roleplaying is, how one should not be intimidated by playing with experienced players/Dms etc and work in building their confidence. The session will probably be two hours or so of discussion and roleplaying, and we can see how initial groups feel its use.

What do you all think? This came to mind after talking to a few players, both here and in threads on the official Bioware forums and realising many people are interested (and seeking guidance) on how to play these games with no previous rp experience of any real kind, and thus would be fun exploration.

I would be happy to tackle this and see how these go if the NWC community feel its in their best interests.. do post here with your thoughts and comments. I simply feel that a player first going through Starstuffs class and then mine will be a much more confident NWC player in a short period of time and would assist the newbie friendly factor of the place.

You might consider sending a PM to Gruush. He put together a module and script for RP101 that he used as an in-game seminar for NWCon2. You may find a lot of reusable material that way.

Just an idea. - JD

Thank you very much for the advice, I shall look into it immediately I have noticed new players all over the place though - its good to have a constant influx this way to replace those moving on (though where they can go that could replace NWN who knows ) and possibly even an increase in numbers. *fingers crossed*

i think it's a grand idea, silvarian! in fact, when star and i first talked about our training session a couple of months ago, i told her that i thought that learning the mechanics of the client, and learing the basics of RP'ing would best be taught in separate classes. Eventually we decided to base our class on the mechanics part , while just touching on RP'ng, except as where questions lead us into it. I'm very happy to see that you are interested in providing a class dedicated to the OTHER half of the equation. I know from our first session of our class during nwcon2.5 that we had several particapants who would have also signed up for yours if it had been available!

I would never have believed how many people were out there waiting for these types of classes until we actually took the chance to try it. For our MP101 session at NWNcon we actually had about twice as many applicants as we had spaces to fill within 24 hours of posting the event!

good luck, and if I can help out in any way let me know.

Same as Scorp! The plan has now snowballed, as these things always do, so I'm going to update the New Player thread. There will now be two classes per month for new players, the MP101 and the RP101, and two application one-shots, held on Wendesday evenings at 10pm GMT (GMT+1 in summertime), on alternate weeks throughout the month. (Silv, if it doesn't work as planned, I won't hold it against you if you have to back out of the arrangement! )

If there are any DM's out there who would be willing to commit to running a one-shot on the second Wednesday of each month at that time, please get in touch.

Also, if there are any DM's and/or trainers who can get together and have a similar arrangement at a US-friendly time, that would be excellent!

I'd be happy to the tackle the North American version of MP101, but I really don't want to get into the RP side of it, nor do I DM.

Anyone who wants to kick around plans/schedules can send me a PM or post here.

I could help out with the North American side of this idea. I would be willing to take on either the RP classes or the MP ones, and for what it's worth I do DM; I could probably run the one-shots.

Great idea

To the extent you don't get a lot of signups, maybe some posts on the main Bioware forums? Might help to get players that don't often (or at all) check the threads here.

this is all cool when the player WANTS to learn

But what do you suggest when you have a player that steadfastly refuses to play nice with the others in your PW or game How do you (tactfully, or maybe not so tactfully) bring this person into the fold? We've tried the "lead by example" technique, followed by the "dropping subtle hints". We are about to pull out the RP Cluebattm to beat them about their head and shoulders. It is very frustrating for me as a DM, and for the other players, but this person is a friend of the family, so.....You see the problem. When the person is under the mistaken delusion that they are already an RP god, what then?

Hmm. I am probably not the best person to ask... cos my advice is basically that it depends which you value the most: the friendship, or the game! If the friendship, bite your tongue and put up with it - not a lot else you can do if you've tried everything to sort it out without resorting to a direct confrontation that might cost you your friendship. However... If the game is more important (hehehe), it's brutal honesty time and hope that the friendship weathers the storm. (Friends? Who needs friends... the game is all that matters! Muahahaha )

So, I assume you're trying to avoid the showdown still, and are hoping that you haven't tried all the alternatives just yet. Something that you might like to try is choosing one particular problem area for discussion, and raising that one point in a private chat between the two of you. Along the lines of "You know when you do that? Well that means this and so can you try doing the other instead please?" See how that goes. If that goes down OK and there's a difference, you can bring other things up a little at a time.

One thing to bear in mind is that, chances are the other player has no idea that the way they do things is causing anyone any problems. If you can show that it's the intereaction between the players that's the problem, rather than that it's all directly that player's fault, it might help them see where you're coming from without getting too defensive.

Well, that's the best I can come up with. Hopefully you'll get more suggestions from other folks, so you can choose the approach that works best for you. Good luck, anyway.
