I'd like to run a course here about how to DM NWN campaigns if there is sufficient interest. If you would wish to take such a course or would like to help with the class, please post below. Campaign Dungeon Mastering: A Seminar In this class, you will be introduced to tips and skills relating to DMing a multiplayer Neverwinter Nights campaign with active DM interaction. New and experienced DMs are welcome, though we expect that all participants will familiarize themselves with basic DM client functions prior to the class. The course will focus on how to create a story in cooperation with your players, covering such topics as: • Game Design & Preparation. • Making Characters Protagonists in an immersive, responsive world. • Improvised NPC Scenes. • Live, on the Fly DMing. • Creating Challenges: from Roleplay to Combat. • Plot, Continuity and Suspense in an Episodic Game. Our explorations will include lecture, discussion, and hands-on practice. The emphasis will be on role-playing campaigns with heavy DM involvement. Estimated course length will be about two hours. SoU and HotU will be required. Date & Time: TBA, weekend at an Americas & Euro-friendly time.

I've run a few campaigns (and written more than a few syllabi back in my teaching days) and would be happy to contribute content or editing work as needed.

Great to see so much interest and offers of help! There's much experience to share here. Thank you! I'll post within the next week my write up about the campaign DMing course so we can join forces and make it the best it can be. Arawen

Hi Arawen, What preparation should someone do who's interested in this. I've completed the DMFI 101 module and read through Lazybones terrific guide. Is there any other material that would be useful prior to taking this course? (*whispers to Arawen* This is what makes NWC a community, experienced people helping out the new ones. Thanks a bunch)

We'll be focusing in the course hands-on practice and discussion among DMs, but for an overview, you might try this DMFI article: Creating a Neverwinter Nights Campaign By Carlo One (Neverwinter Connections/Bioware handle) http://dmfi.slightlysilly.net/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=5 There is also a thread on the DMFI Guild Forum which has community discussion about creating and DMing campaigns. - Arawen

DMFI 101 and this class will require HotU because the standard set of DM-tools, the DMFI wands and widgets, requires both expansions. There are no current versions of these DM tools for vanilla NWN or SoU only so they have not been updated for compatibility with the last year's worth of patches. However, if you wish to get started with DMing, you can practice with the client commands listed in the back of the NWN manual, then load up one of the DMFI modules that does not require HotU. My DM version of the Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh contains DM tools and a guide with many suggestions about what DMs can do to create a live pen and paper style. It's essentially a guide to how my co-DMs and I ran our first few games. Jason Robinson's The Vethboro Dragon has a similarly large quantity of documentation that make it easy to get started. If you are looking for a good NWN only campaign module, you might take a look at Soul Keep. Quillmaster's DM documentation is extensive. The DM-Friendly list of modules listed by expanasion pack is here: http://dmfi.slightlysilly.net/modules.php?name=DMFI_Mods Also, Jehaine is running a lot of SoU only modules, so you might ask him if you could observe/help. -Arawen

Thanks, Arawen. I've wanted to try it out, but my computer really couldn't handle hosting a game. I'll try getting in touch with Jehaine and see if I can get some help.

Thank you for your interest. I envision that the course will be put together as a community effort. I'd especially like to see demonstrations of a variety of DM styles. A joint effort would allow the course, DMFI 102, to be run more easily by other DMs as well. Since my work hours are very long Monday to Friday, most likely it will be the weekend before I can post my draft course and start the process of community input. By the way, thank you to all the DMs who volunteered to help! I will be calling on you. The course may take a few weeks to produce, but I'm confident the community effort will be much better than anything I could do by myself. We did this before with Lazybones' Guide to NWN DMing and the results were very good.
