http://www.tv.com/story/story.html&story_id=335 Firefly, a science fiction series that was canceled midway through its first season on Fox, has found a new home on the Sci Fi Channel. All existing episodes will air this summer, though there is no word on a second season. The cult favorite Firefly alights on the Sci Fi Channel! Fans of the cult-hit series Firefly will be pleased to learn that the show has been picked up by the Sci Fi Channel--just two months before the release of Serenity, a Universal Pictures film based on the series. For the uninitiated, Firefly is a "space Western" set 500 years from now, in a spaceship that cruises the outer borders of the planetary system that humanity has taken as its new home. The crew is made up of rebels who are fleeing persecution by the unified government known as the Alliance. Firefly made its debut on Fox in 2002 but was canceled before the end of its first season. The Sci Fi Channel will air all 15 existing episodes, including the three that never made it to TV, starting on Friday, July 22.

Unfortunately, Fox holds the unique rights to a television version of Firefly (for 10 years, IIRC). Thus no episodes can be created without Fox being in on it (read as: controlling the process). Assuming that the movies do tolerably well, there is no way that they will sell the rights for a price that SciFi can afford. And from what I understand of the deal from Universal, that studio has an option on three movies, and Fox cannot bring the show back as long as Universal is making those three films, or it elects not to make the sequels and yield the option back to Fox. If others have better information, I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but at the moment the chance of new FF TV episodes is virtually nil. And of course the catch-22 is that if the movies do really well, the actors may become big stars, and no longer willing to do more episodes of the show regardless of Fox's interest.

Well, the tantilizing bit of additional info, LB, is this quoted press release (I don't know the original source!): http://browncoats.serenitymovie.com/serenity/index.html?fuseaction=forum.viewtopic&t=13842&start=0 is the link, but here's the press release, with the KEY PHRASE in capitals: ---------------------------------------- SCI FI Channel announced that it will air reruns of Fox's canceled SF series Firefly, including three episodes that never aired on Fox. SCI FI will air all 14 hours of the show, from creator Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), starting July 22, in the 7 p.m. ET/PT Friday timeslot. It will be followed by new episodes of Stargate SG-1 at 8, Stargate Atlantis at 9 and Battlestar Galactica at 10. The channel will air the episodes in their intended order, beginning with Whedon's pilot. (Fox, by contrast, began with the show's third produced hour, "The Train Job," and aired the two-hour pilot at the end of the show's abortive first season.) SCI FI ACQUIRED EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS TO THE SHOW from 20th Century Television, which produced the show for the Fox Broadcasting Co. Firefly centers on the ragtag crew of the firefly-class transport ship Serenity 500 years in the future, led by renegade Capt. Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), a veteran of the losing side in a galactic civil war. Universal Pictures will release Serenity, a theatrical film based on Firefly, on Sept. 30. Universal and SCI FI are owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM. --------------------------------------- Hear that? 'exclusive rights to the show'. Now, that could mean a lot of things, and the debate is raging on the Firefly boards. Sounds to me like new eps could happen - but EVEN if Sci-Fi (aka Universal) DIDN'T acquire the rights to NEW episodes, they're already busily rebranding Firefly into 'Serenity.' If that happens, I'd think it'd be more than within their rights to make 'Serenity' the series. After all, Margaret Weis has rights to the 'Serenity' roleplaying game - NOT the rights to the 'Firefly' roleplaying game. If there's a difference there, that means there's likely a difference in a show, too! Anyway, yes, 3 movies is a very likely first step - but I'm hearing hints if you read between the lines that Joss Whedon is going to rush the sequels out quickly, rather than space them out. That could easily mean a new show in 3-4 years, if he really wants - with fewer/some different cast, I'm sure. It's a long shot - almost impossible, you might say. But the odds of a Firefly MOVIE were nil, too, after Fox killed it... By the way, isn't this WAY off topic? Oh - here - on topic, I'm working on a single-player Firefly mod!!! Small one, and probably not so great, but I'm trying to rush one out

Great, I hope you guys are right. And I think that a SP Firefly mod may serve to spread the word on your excellent conversion, FW. I've thought about using it to build a short Wild West mod, but who has the time...

Look at what happened with Family Guy. It did so well in the DVD aftermarket thanks to Adult Swim, perhaps the same will happen here. I never saw Firefly, sounds interesting. I'll have to try and catch an episode... man I need to invest in a TiVo.

Well there is a NWN D20 modern set. If they can run Shadowrun, they can run that.

Quick and the Dead is the only single player firefly we've got and I'm suprised at how well it works. F20 really doesn't seem practical for non-DMed games but it can be done.

Actually, I think Eliandi's just saying he's seen the TRAILER, right? But yes, hate me, Lazybones - I've seen the actual MOVIE two (yes two) times. DBScarcely (a player here) got me tickets in person the first time, and URLy Warning got me my tickets the second time (notified me 30 seconds after the tickets went on sale - good thing, since they were sold out in about 7 minutes). September 30th - Aim to misbehave. As for the single-player mod, I've got Beaumonde's quests MOSTLY working, as well the ones on Serenity (I love the 1.66 Test Module option!!!). Areas are all done - I'm reusing from the multiplayer - but quest-making and filling out lots of dialogue can sure take time.

Ah, yes, I was confused by Eliandi's post. I've seen the trailer, at least, although not at the theater.

For all those that care, I completed my DMing of a Firefly campaign. Took 8mo, was very cool, and ended with a nice caper. Thanks Forrestwolf!

Firefly begins this Friday night, I have never seen it, but since I already watched Sci-fi, Fridays, there is no doubt that I will be watching it. Ever since Farscape went away, Sci-Fi has been having a difficult time finding something to fill its slot (I miss Farscape). I believe Firefly will be a success and Sci-Fi WILL make new episodes. Baattlestar Galactica (best show on tv), Stargate: SG1 (now with Ben Browder and Claudia Black from Farscape!), Stargate: Atlantis (ehh), and now Firefly. A line-up that makes this sci-fi geek drool. I have written a couple of letters, one to Sci-Fi and one to Lucasfilm Ltd., trying to convince them to make a weekly series called "Star Wars: Bounty Hunter Adventures", I know this doesn't have anything to do with this topic, but I figured that maybe this group could join me in trying to convince Sci-Fi and Lucasfilm to make this show. Anyone... ....

Have fun watching Firefly tomorrow night (7/22), at 7 pm eastern US time on Sci-Fi! It will be the first part of Serenity, the pilot episode - one of the best episodes of the show. Something my wife and I thought the first time we saw the show was that the characters just WORKED together somehow - like they really HAD known each other for a long time. It felt very, very real - and that's very hard for a show to do from the first episode. As for Star Wars: I thought there'd been some OFFICIAL word of Lucasfilm planning a TV show for Star Wars! Am I wrong about that? Bad news on the single-player mod, by the way - the Toolset ate it. Bad me for not keeping backups, but while I could mostly recover from the corrupted file, it never ran the same again, and I've given up. Instead, I'm doing Gamma World! Stay tuned for more news on that project
