Devs Want YOUR Input on the DM Client

Go to that thread. It is not a thread to complain about the current DM client. It is not a thread to complain about the lack of a DM client in the initial shipment. It's a sincere effort on the part of the developers to solicit information from YOU on how to improve the DM client. Of all the people that make up the NWN community, it is the NWC community that probably uses the client most of all and can make the best suggestions.

Head over and participate!

Here is what I wrote there:

Needs:
1: NPC Possession
2: Spawn NPC's/Monsters
3: Spawn Items/Placeables
4: The ability to jump -the players- around the mod.

Wants:
Everything else.

The list of needs are the bare minimum needed for DM interaction. I've been playing and DMing a game at Neverwinter Connections for a few years now. There are lots of tricks and options but the top 4 I repeated are the only real must haves.

I don't care how they do it, function of the normal client or it's own. But the MOST important things DM needs are the Client/Chooser and the ability of Possess. Everything else is bonus.

Heck it has taken years to get the NWN1 DM client to the place it is now. If we could get *SOMETHING* that lets ud do the top 4, then I think us DM's could get by.

Yes that is pretty right on the spot there with that list - those four are the bare minimum needed to get going and run something if Obsidian are going to give us a barebones DM client first. One just hopes we arn't stuck with that with no follow up patch later.. grrr.

NPC possession

If they were asking me how to improve the current DM client (with NWN), I would say try to make NPC possession not so awkward. I love possessing NPC's and dialogue. What I don't like is hopping around from one NPC to another, sometimes creating a scene with two NPC's or more talking at once is still difficult for me to do. I'd like to have the ability to have a crowd speak at once without a co-DM assisting me. What if a PC was asking a question of character A while I'm possessing Character B in another room? I'd like the ability to throw my voice still in another room (which I know is possible with DMFI wands, but I still find it awkward).

I hope there is a way to make NPC possession a little more streamlined so dialogue can flow smoothly. Also, to make it more efficient so I can throw my voice to various NPC's with ease.

Another thought I had was, if there was a way to make the interface a little more user friendly for slow typers? Perhaps more quick key-codes?

Also, I don't know if it would be possible, but if there could be some cut-paste feature with Microsoft Word (or even Notepad) where we could cut some lengthy text and paste it on the DM client, would that be possible?

Just some idle thoughts.

You can cut and paste from Notepad (or any text editor, like Word or Wordpad). You need to hightlight the text, hit - to copy, then - to paste it in the text box. I think I mentioned the NPC issue and others have as well. Hopefully, if the DM client gets shipped, it'll include what we've been suggesting.

I'm wondering... and this may be a toolset question, too... if there are any machinima-like tools to be included for making NWN-like movies...or at least designing your own cutscenes. This may be of interest to those DM's that want to end a chapter in a long campaign with a small cutscene (end of Act I) or some such. For those theatrical DM's who thrive on visual storytelling.

Also, included in the DM's armament, could be a way to give a command to start the animation/movie/"marionettes" to start acting some pre-planned movements...BUT there could be multiple cutscenes depending on how the players acted. If this has been addressed already, sorry. I don't read the forums that often. I just think idly (and read idly...and lurk idly).

You can do something like this now in NWN1, it's just extensive coding and you can't change it on the fly (Well you could if you coded for it).

Hmm, I know it can be done on NWN 1, but developing it as a dedicated part of the package...much like the Sims has a movie maker, with a user-friendly interface.

According to dev posts I've seen and info on the game you will have this mechanism. They said the same ability they have to create cut scenes will be in the toolset to do the same. Don't think it's anything like Machinima, but it's there. Though how much scripting, etc it takes or if it's faily simple is anyone's guess at this point.
