DM Client to Download DAY OF RELEASE

In case you missed it, the Community Update #10 is up on the official forums. Most importantly to us is the following:

So, this week we're going to try and load you up with information to help clear the air and set the record straight on a few things. The first being the DM Client. The DM client will not ship with the game in the box. We looked at a number of different scenarios and the best one that the team decided upon is to release the DM Client in full as a download the same day of the release. So while it will not ship in the box it will come out with the game. That's the official word as of today.

YAY!

WOOT!

That I can live with. Actually it makes a lot of sense. Saves Disc space and those who want it can d/l it.

I am curious what they mean by "full" but I will be happy with basic with the promise to add new features in a patch.

Er, something like that.

But seriously though - I don't think they would've ever considered not including it - it just came down to a matter of time, money and availble resources.

By the way, now is the time to make sure we get our voices heard on what we want in the client - from the time they go gold, to to the time it's in stores you'll have a whole team of programmers, designers and QA testers slaving away at it - so get started!

Agree! So look here and post any additional concepts - this is a pretty extensive community recommendation list. If something is missing - FIX IT!

Very good news and I am quite content to eat my words of doubt earlier. However, I would not be surprised if the outcry that followed the initial release was a factor in Obsidian electing to push forward so quickly. If anything, the myth that the DM Client is inconsequential (not here, of course, but a view held by many who hold the SP campaigns up as the Holy Grail of NWN) has been dispelled.

I will definitely do my best to support the development of the Client and of DM-friendly content upon release.

Now just try and remember how happy we all were about this when we slog through six months of devastating bugs and patches....

Given Atari's financial situation, I'm hoping they support the game for that long... or free Obsidian to find an alternative source to help support. NWN2, like it's predecessor has the potential to be a long term product provided it is given a chance to grow with the community.

Noting that Bioware just announced another premium module for NWN1, even if NWN2 flops and has no support, I am fairly certain that a large number of hacker/programmer/die hards will keep it running for years.

I am very pleased to see they are coming out with a DM client right away. I agree, there are going to be bugs, I have never seen a software project without one. Hopefully they will be minor and quickly fixed.

I wouldn't be surprised if the DM client anger expressed by the community rearranged a few of their priorities a bit.

I can guarantee you they'll already have a list of known bugs they need to get patched once the game goes gold, and that they would have normally been working on the first patch even prior to release. They still only have X number of Zots to work with even after the game goes gold, so something has to give to fit the DM client programming in. Expect a longer time until the first patch perhaps?

In any event, I am extremely glad they listened. If offer a DM client on day one, they'll get my full $50 by the weekend! NWN 1 didn't even get purchased by me for a month or so after it came out!
