And not a very good one. At Escapist Magazine.

The gameplay of computer RPGs doesn't feel like D&D in the old days and it never will. Trying to design a computer game that plays like a tabletop RPG just makes for a broken computer game. It seems obvious now, but like so many designers before me, I had to learn it for myself.

Well, the whole article is even worse, though occasionally humorous. So I decided to send a letter to the editor, which did get published.

In Response to "Don't Roleplay the Bugs": I just rolled my eyes when I read this beginner's description of playing DM'ed sessions in Neverwinter Nights. Try talking to someone who has been running them since 2002 over at Neverwinter Connections. You absolutely can emulate the PnP environment, and in many ways do it better, since combat is essentially real time with the computer doing all of the rolls for you and the immersion is far greater. You can reduce your build time by downloading campaign modules, same as you do in PnP by buying published modules, except they're free.

I have fond memories of my tabletop days, but I have no desire to return to them. NWN is the superior game. That it takes more than a few sessions to do it well should come as no surprise to someone who has played a lot of tabletop. Picture what your first few sessions of tabletop gaming were like. I doubt it was the Lord of the Rings.

I read the article (I really enjoy reading The Escapist) and thought it raised some good points. I was convinced, for example, that his gaming buddies were probably not the best test subjects for his module. However, since I don't have any PnP experience, I wasn't sure about some of the PnP-specific arguments that were posed.

Thanks for providing your input, Mulu. Your experience will certainly shed some light on how NWN fits in that genre.

I've played tabletop D&D with people who couldn't roleplay their way out of a paper, DMs that made Monty Haul seem reasonable, and characters that were so munchkin that they could have starred in "The Wizard of Oz."

D&D must be broken.

Mulu, great response! In many ways NWN is much superior to PnP, it's a lot easier to suspend disbelief when you're not staring at a guy who's 6'5" telling you he's the elf queen.

Reading that article, I couldn't help but think, "The problem isn't with the game, it's with the people playing it." I know that we may be biased, but I agree with Mulu's commentary. I think that the author was blinded by nostalgia from what he remembers from his tabletop days. Trying to make NWN (or any other game for that matter) fit exactly into that experience is an effort in futility. Maybe we can invite him into a game here and get a nice retraction written?

Now, now... a retraction is not necessary. Maybe he simply needs to see what other possibilities exist. The author is STILLL entitled to his feelings.
*mutters* Even though we know he is misinformed.

The hard part for me to keep in mind - time and again - is that the NWC community is a small piece of what is happening out there. We have friends that play NWN but their experiences have never come near to what we have found here. When we mention it, it's almost as if we told them that they need to switch their brand of toothpaste. Some folks really don't want to change, oddly enough. *shrugs*

Good going Mulu. Bang on.

NWN has its benefits and drawbacks, and in some ways for some things is equal to, or better than tabletop. Just takes forever to program a decent server.

The response was exactly what was needed.

It feels good to fight the good fight.
