personally, I see this community thriving for a long time yet to come. I think it has surpassed its original purpose, of bringing NWN's players together, as many people have made many friends here, and use it as a basis for a number of (other) games.

Somewhere it was posted that the site will eventually be a meeting/planning ground for many games, which I think is an excellent idea! Many wonderful friendships were created and nurtured here, far beyond "NWN".

As far as NWN's itself, I really see there being 2 camps here. One is DnD players, who (as posted above) use NWN as medium for playing out DnD games. The other (and these are fewer here, but far more I think, in the rest of gaming populace) - are those who simply wanted a very good C-RPG, which NWN was, and is. Most of the dissension seems to stem from NWN's 2 ability to continue to provide that "DnD" feel or role.

Personally, I've never played table-top DnD - though I've certainly learned a lot about since playing NWN's! lol! I've also no interest in playing it ( I know, blasphemy! ) Mostly I "put up with" DM's wanting me to do "rolls" for things (which to me breaks immersion in the gameworld) - because a good story/or/player driven campaign/game is like nothing else I've ever played on my computer! The DnD ruleset is just this good "engine" that balances everything out.

BUT - the graphics in NWN are just too dated to enjoy (for me) anymore. Compared to games like Oblivion, half-life2 and even DDO. Even Obsidian, with all their resources, had to create a new graphics engine. So how much can we expect from DLA or Codi? Great stuff, I'm sure - but the impossible, is well... impossible.

I'll buy NWN's 2 on the day its released, for all the eye-candy and story-fun it offers. I'm sure all the other "stuff" we need will get sorted out. I just hope this community doesn't become divided between the 2 games - we'd all loose because of that

Gimme some modernized graphics, with the creativity and friendship NeverWinter Connections offers, I'm here for many years to come!

While I understand completely that NWN is not about visuals but about our imaginations and clearly what we see on the screen is a 'representation' of what the characters are seeing combined with descriptive shouts/tells etc, I have to agree with Conor in that I do feel that improved visuals do add a lot to 'this' medium. The campaign that I ran for a year while focussed heavily on the characters, the story and the setting had a lot of effort placed on its visuals and its accompanying music
(a number of DMs spend so much time building meticulously for that perfect visual landscape - at least the best they can do with NWN even with innovative ways of making the best of a tough situation) but we definitely had a lot of frustration from the limited engine and the fact it simply could not show what we envisioned.

While we knew our players would hopefully be able to imagine much of it (especially with DM atmospheric tells), we still wished very much to be able to show the landscape much better on screen as well as the various effects we wanted to create.

With the new engine, lighting and other effects it would be possible to create an even more pleasing experience visually. I know that classic pen and paper was never about direct visuals (since there were none!) but I think NWN has become a medium of its own and this aspect can be rather important depending on your perspective on the matter. I think the possibilities with NWN 2 in this regard are rather wonderful and even though one can understand continuing with NWN for a significant period of time even after NWN2s release due to the amount of community grounding already in place, I personally think one glance at NWN 2 not only visually but in terms of hopefully the improved interface and improved toolkit, one may wish to leave NWN resting comfortable and take a seat in the 'new car' fresh from the dealership The seats may seem uncomfortable as they haven't been worn in, there may be a plstic smell and it just doesn't feel right... but perhaps that will come sooner rather than later...

But we shall see how it goes

We use NWN as movable, posable minis, with the graphics we see with the NWN engine as a very nice battlemat, and each player's desktop PC keeps track of the sheet, and combat, rolls the combat dice, and keeps track of all the results. The rest is roleplaying.

If we need to have anything more, one of our DMs describe it.

Perfectly fine for any and all D&D gaming, even though a lot of our players wish it were more like 1st ed, or 2nd ed. AD&D.

Not buying NWN2, as Mulu states, many, many good reasons not to.
