Wines, Beers and Spirits- FR style

Some of the players in my campaign want alcoholic beverages for their PCs, especially since one of them has a drinking problem.

At the moment they are in the underdark and so I've put in Morimatra and Berdruskan Dark. The problem is, whenever I look for a FR drink list, all I can ever find is an elven wine list.

I know Morimatra is a drow drink 'cos it says so, but I've had to guess that Berdruskan Dark is probably a drow drink.

I would also like to add some drinks of other races, other than just elves, for later on. Does anyone know where I can find a list?

Thankyou.

In the days before pasteurization and refrigeration beer had to be brewed locally. You couldnt really ship it like you can today, so any beer list would be pretty darn large. Either just make up names, or describe beeer by its contents, leave out the varieties that get their name from some geographic location such as Pilsner, Bock, etc.

Wheat Stout
Dark Lager
Amber Ale
etc.

Take a look at the websites of the major breweries for a better list. Anheuser-Busch, Inbev, Sam Addams.

If you have any specific questions about any varieties of beer or its general ingredients don't hesitate to ask.

Hope that helps.

The other thing to consider is what was grown locally and maybe use that to tailor the beverage. I suspect that mead is popular from that setting because honey, one of the main ingredients, is widely available. The season factors in as well, as the fermination process often/usually extends beyond the growing period. For example, your cherry wheat beer would have most likely exploded or gone bad by the time the NEXT cherry season is underway.

I would also recommend searching homebrew sites for ideas, which might give you ideas for the equipment involved as well. Craft beermaking has a heavy dependency of the availability of ingredients, especially due to space and cost constraints.

The site and shops I like are the following:
http://www.midwestsupplies.com/
http://www.northernbrewer.com/

You can Google and find a shop closer to your home and take a look, too. Like nearly any crafter, beer makers love to talk about what they know and make!

I hope that helps. The hubster and I have homebrewed for roughly a dozen years, so I'm happy to hear your questions, too.

Is a great place to start. I imported the 30 wines and ales included in the erf into my campaign and it really helped provide additional flavor to taverns, etc. The items come with some great descriptions.

I'm pretty sure Berduskan dark is just a dark beer, not an Underdark beer.

Maybe Deep Gnome Pale Mushroom Ale? Svirfneblin Spirits? These things are ridiculously easy to toolset, just choose a container, a name, a price, add alcohol effect and give it a description. You could add some minor magical effects too so your PC's can be drunk and buffed at the same time.

True that; custom potions that add minor beneficial and negative effects are fairly easy to implement using the Tag-Based Scripts system introduced with HotU. Basic liquors are even easier, but it can add something to the campaign to include an alien mixture that adds a slight bonus to stamina for a time to simulate the narcotic effect of the beverage, at a cost of a hangover afterward.

In my most recent campaign, I included a beverage retailer on Sigil that had a fairly decent selection of interesting beverages from across the planes; most of which added a temporary small bonus at some minor physical cost (sometimes delayed). Unfortunately most of my players have gotten pretty paranoid about sampling strange elixirs in my game... it's really inconceivable, but it may have something to do with that time I put potions of unlabeled embalming fluid in one of my modules.

Cool.

Okay, thankyou people.
I think I'll put in one or two standard drinks and also make some stuff up.

How does the Tag based Scripting work?
