Just wondering if anyone has tried playing with A Geforce 5500? I understand the tool set takes a more powerful card but am hoping that it does play well enough with the one I have. Santa's pockets aren't very deep this year. P4 2.8 1G

I think you will find the game virtually unplayable on a 5500. You would be better served by trying to save a bit and hit something in the 6600 or 6800 series if you want to stay fairly inexpensive. At least, that is based on a sticky in the NWN2 forums.

i think we have all just gotten spoiled with NWN. i mean, my rig may be 4 years old, but it still plays NWN with all settings cranked. not so anymore. man, this really makes me feel like a dino. at least i can say that other then a new vid card last year and more ram, i haven't done any upgrades in a long, long time. i just hope my new rig is gonna be as long lived.

I wouldn't exactly say spoiled...for me, it's more like this:

no... my point is that we have been playing the same game for almost 4 years. doesn't require a whole lot of upgrades, ya know. i got UT2k4 last year for my birthday hence the new vid card and ram. but other then that, its the same rig i built to play NWN on.

I must say you should check Gamespot's NWN2 review. They gave NWN2 -6- points for the graphics because they don't justify the requirements - and generally don't look THAT good. I think it's like one of the only three reviews that Gamespot hits spot-on in most of the scores.

I'm not a graphics hog anyways, I just want a stable platform that I can tell my stories with. I need to replace some stuff anyways, but I'll see what I can do.

| That's what really clinched it for me. It seemed like the game required the players to jump through a lot of technological hoops that, based on what I saw, I could not cost- or effort-justify.

The way I look at it is that if you build a rig for this game, then you should be set for the next few years. Lets face it, games just aren't pushing the envelope like they used to. HL2 was the first big game to truely push hardware in the last couple years. NWN2 is gonna be much like that. I think the big kicker is the shader 3 and the large texture / terrain maps. They are just really, really big, and run at full specs, quite spectacular, IMO. But, TBH, it's not the best looking game of its time, but that probably has more to do with the toolset. If you look at any other game's editor, they are WAY more complicated then the NWN2 toolset. It's a trade off to me.

However the graphics do look light years ahead of NWN1 and they support cards that will only cost you fifty bucks. That's not much for a computer upgrade. My rig is okay in some areas and good in others. I have a 6800 I got luck on on Ebay, but a processor that only meets the min specs. 1.5 gig of ram and I haven't noticed any issues. I don't have everything cranked, but I have most of the settings on. I've been very impressed by the way things look and those that compare it to Oblivion, I don't see it. Oblivion looked ugly overall to me aside from the scenery, the characters were as ugly as any of the games Bethesda has put out. NWN2 is a mix, you can have ugly or pretty. Eye of the beholder I guess, but I'm glad I bought it and I'm enjoying it, aside from a few minor issues.

| I have to agree with J'Dai on this one. The fact that a new video card might only cost $50, that doesn't factor in the cost for the game itself, plus sales tax, new memory if needed, and shippying and handling charges if I went the online route. So, that's upwards of $150 just to play a game. If the game turns out to live up to the hype and hopes, I'll see about getting it. Otherwise, I'll stick with what I have until I'm able to do a system upgrade.

Hey all! Long time no post. I am looking to get NWN2 and explore the OC. I have a GEForce4 Ti 4600. This won't run the game, but as I'm looking for a new card, I just need to find one that's PCI compatible, right? Is there any difference between PCI and PCI Express? They the same?

Hey now... good to see ya, BBP. There is a big difference between PCI and PCIe. The slots are different size and provide a larger bus to the CPU. PCIe is 16x, but I am not sure what regular old PCI is. The two are not compatible. You really think you have PCI video card? They are pretty hard to find these days and if you system is even 5 years old or so, you will most likely have AGP. You can find AGP cards that will run the game. They tend to be slightly more expensive then the PCIe counterparts because its "out of fashion". Everything is slowly moving over to PCIe, so they charge a premium for AGP cards of the same model.
