My favorite PW is Astoria 2. It only requires both expansions and CEP. Thats it. It is a great rp server. It is very hard to lvl up, but thats not what I care about. To me, good rp is what makes me want to go on a server. Thats why I play on Astoria 2. If you are more of a hack n slash type, you wouldnt like this server.

I just popped on to Moonshae for an hour for my lunch here, just to check it out. I could see where it would be fun with a group of 3-4 buddies perhaps. But going there solo is not very fun. Lots of big empty areas, and then when you do find something, it's usually 6-10 of those somethings, so you have no chance at level 1 to kill them. None of the characters in town would speak to me or give me quests, save the bard and merchants. The Bard told me about the general area but that was about it. I will admit that I didn't spend much time there, but my one hour excusion sent the frustration factor high enough to not want to go back and visit it again alone. -Festivus

I've played on Avlis Mythos and a few other places.I'm not bashing them as I loved most of them. But none seemed to catch my attention like Shadows of the Sword Coast. a good mix of Action and Roleplay, well made areas and quests that are very fun to go through. And not to mention the challenge and risk of Perma Death that you eighter love or hate. You can check thier site out here http://vampclan.com/forum/

The best I've played on so far were Haze and Xunder Burakan. Both were nicely polished, well presented and had excellent settings. They are both low magic, high roleplaying worlds. In fact, they both inspired me to work on my own project, (Here comes the plug!) Lands of Legacy. Being a pen and paper DM since I was child, it's very important to me to capture the essence of a tabletop game. Every area you enter gives you a description as if the DM was reading it from a book. Every dungeon room is detailed also. There are scripted quests, but I've pushed myself to go that one extra step with them. Instead of simple A to B quests, expect whole mini modules in themselves. Quests lead onto other quests and open up hidden areas which are not normally available. For example, on one quest, you find a medallion which appears worthless. Later, if you go and research that medallion you find it out it was once worn by ancient druids who used to live in the forest near town. Go to the forest and a spirit of a druid appears, opening up a whole new quest for you. When creating a PW, it's hard not to rush it. If you take time and care over everything you do in it, be it building areas, scripting etc, you will be surprised at what you can do. Say in a conversation it reads... 'The human frowns and throws open his chest with a bang.' In the game I would actually script it so the npc does so. It is these little details that I feel makes a world come alive. Anyway, rambling - Jeddar.

Seems servers most times are either on one end of the line (RP), or on theother end of the line - pure action... i stopped doing pub servers, xcept for Nordock (a PW) - which i find funny... there some quests scattered around.. there seldom many on it, but i dont mind... I find many PW either is all bout having as many signed up on theyre site as possible, or have as many on the server as possible, more then actually providing some fun.. beeing interesting.. trying to actually have/run this active world where things happen, but there also is calm moments.. For me the optimal PW was where there was players on all fractions, where PVP-wars was going on (the orc guy decides to rob the castle - and the orc PCs joins in, fighting vs the castle defense - which also may have PC's. Ofc some thought have to be put into making it "real" - and no doubt some DM/GMs would be needed. Also a world where you can actually "build" ure hut in the forrest, catch food (crafting) - go on adventures, or that is sometimes the adventure may come to u.. Question is thow - not many ppl will be the blacksmith/guard - standing and standing for perhaps some time in the city.. it would also require some "youre char can actually die here, and may not return" - but... just some thoughts - Tigrius

As my first foray into the persistent world style of play, I just joined the Avlis PW as a gnome sorcerer on the Deglos server. I ran around from area to area for like 30 minutes trying to find someone to talk to or even a shop where I could buy things. Nothing could be found. Every door I opened in the game had no entry point or nothing in it. I felt I was suffocated in a world that didn't function so I quit the game. I don't know what was going on, but my first experience with a PW wasn't a very good one.

| I don't know anything about this particular server, but in general, getting started on a PW is the toughest part of the process. Since you don't know anyone, or know anything about the world, it can be tough to figure out "what to do". There will often be no DMs on many PWs, and if there are they may be busy with existing regular players. Generally, it helps to start on a PW where there is a good size population, and try to talk to other players you run into near the start area. On many of the PWs I've played on, they will be willing to at least give you advice. It is rare though not unheard of to wind up in a classic PnP/NWC adventuring party your first few times on. If you stick with it and get to know some of the other players, you'll find this becomes more common as you frequent a particular PW more. One suggestion is to try scheduling PW play through NWC just like you would a normal game. If you can find some others who are willing to start exploring on the same PW, you can arrive with a built in adventuring party.

Continuing on that advice, I'd suggest reading the PW forums and trying to find any kind of "new player event," or for that matter posting your interest in playing on their forum and see what the response is. Many PW's have conscientious admins and players who are all too eager to help a new player get started. Just don't expect to find the perfect match on the first try. You may have to play on several PW's until you find one that suits you, and none of them will ever be as good as traditional campaign play, IMO.

It was the Deglos server. I didn't find a single thing or person to interact with at all. I can deal with a server not being highly populated as long as there is something to do but there was absolutely "nothing" to interact with that added anything to the game. Like I said, I would open a door and it would just be a hollow space. I'm talking absolutely nothing to do except run around looking for a way out of the unpopulated void. I may just have to try another server...or another PW.

Hi, First off, only just found this place, so hello, and hope its ok to start off with a shameless plug for the PW I play and DM in. Ive been there 8 months or so, still hopelessly addicted...and the PW itself has been running for years. The one thing this world lacks is enough players. I have to believe this is through people not knowing of it...it has an amazing community, and some really great rp'ers, but there is room for lots more so if you havent tried it read the following and then come give us a try if still interested. -Over 500 areas, this is a huge, beautifully crafted world with amazingly atmospheric descriptions for each area. -Huge amount of history, politics and story to get immersed in. Plenty of DM's that all really love this world, and this includes DM's for every timezone, GMT definitely included. And fantastic rp'ers abound that keep the stories rolling all on their own. -A very active community, whose views are listened to. -A vast variety of creatures to get killed by. -Builders always adding to and expanding the world and its denizens. -Server is up 24/7. Resets take about 5 mins every 8 hrs, and there is plenty of warning when one is due. -A website with a huge amount of info and a lot of friendly people ready to help answer questions. Same with the IRC community. And the website has some amazingly creative writers with great background stories...creativity definitely encouraged here. -Just been moved to a brand new server, with a far faster connection, so performance issues and lag are much, much improved. Other facts that may put some off, but may also appeal to others: -This is a dangerous world. There are a lot of areas too dangerous for any character to go alone, no matter how powerful they are. This world demands that you respect it...you cannot go and raid the high temple of an evil god and not be prepared for serious consequences. -It is -not- HCR but does have campkits, bedrolls and rations for resting in the wild. -It is mid-range for items. No items of perm haste, true seeing, improved evasion or the like. +3 can be found in drops - though not common; +4 very rare, mainly dm given; +5 and higher doesnt exist, except maybe +5 versus undead/evil/etc type weapons. -It is reasonably slow levelling, and rp intensive. It uses a fairly unique xp system, where you get xp for each new area you enter the first time, each spell you cast or certain skills you use. But xp for spells, skills and kills all goes down the more you do them. So you can only kill a certain creature so many times before the xp gained becomes minimal, cast a certain spell so many times, etc, etc. -It requires time, patience and dedication. You -can- really enjoy Vives if you have limited time to play...as long as you are patient. But the learning curve can be steep at the beginning. -Death penalties beyond 2nd level can hurt...lose 5% of total xp and 25% of gold. Can really hurt at high levels, especially with the xp system the way it is. But death is to be feared and avoided. -It has some pretty large hak paks. The world is -full- of custom content, its quite amazing the depth and beauty of this world. But low spec computers can suffer as a result -Your first 10 hrs approximately you are free to wander. In that time you need to submit the application form from the website. This is just a means of trying to make sure its those with some genuine interest in RP that play Vives. The application forms are dealt with swiftly, there are about 15-20 active DM's and admin so you will not be waiting long for it to be authorized once submitted. -PvP very restricted and rare, though not unknown. Good and evil do definitely exist in Vives PC's, and are both very supported. But PvP generally a last resort, consensual and / or with DM approval. -It needs both HoTU and SoU. CEP not needed. -Above all, it has a simply breathtaking group of rp'ers that play there...two characters already have over a 1000 RL hours IG...and many players have well over that spread amongst all their characters. If you've got this far through my waffle, then come give it a try. I promise if you like quality rp, an amazingly alive world and a never ending list of places to visit and things to kill / be killed by...then you wont be disappointed. The website is: http://24.235.233.114/vives/Default.aspx The new IP for the actual PW is: 24.235.233.114 Look forward to seeing you IG, my main two characters are Sirac Gerardson, and Muga Bugbreath. Look forward to seeing some more IG...especially you GMT'ers! Oh, and any questions...ask away, here or on the Vives website. Wow, if anyone has read this far congrats! Not a bad length for a first post eh! *grins* Cya, Sirac

In regards to Avlis, I would recomend starting on a different server. There are things to do on Deglos, but they are mainly geared to more experienced players ( some very nasty places within). The more populated servers on Avlis are the Elysia,Mikona, and Le'Or T'Nanshi, with Ferrell close behind. Each server depicts a different part of the world, and Deglos just hasn't gotten a lot of attention from the world builders. However, you can always find people on Elysia or Le'Or. During prime time, These servers, along with Mikona and 0the wilderness sever ( stay away from the wilderness till you are more experienced, very dangerous areas there if you're new) arer very busy during those times. Also, I strongly recomend reading the website and getting into the forums. There is also a downloadable user's guide with lots of good info. Avlis can be a little harder to get into initially, because it's an original world ( not based on Forgotten realms) with it's own history, deities, factions, crafting system (which is better than anything else out there btw, the team has devoted a lot of time to crafting). Course the best thing about Avlis too, if you get tired of playing there, there are the CoPap worlds which let you try out other worlds without having to make an all new character to play. My favorite thing about the world too is, for a heavy rp world, the community is really great towards new players. You don't get a lot of the "rp nazi " crap you see with some other rp servers. Our community doesn't look down their noses at new rp'ers, people are more than happy to help out, as long as they someone making an effort. If ya haven't already guessed, i am an Avlis fan hehe.
