Hmm, alright I might have a look at this Dying Earth book if I can find it, since it's mentioned so many times in this thread and because of the DnD influence.

Hmm, well I have already mentioned the Incarnations of Immortality series by Piers Anthony in another thread.
Of course.. the Dragonlance books are great.
Battlefield Earth by L Ron Hubbard is a must read if you like sci-fi fantasy. It is a huge book though, over 1000 pages.
The Necroscope series by Brian Lumley is IMO an excellent series if you like vampires, really it is excellent even if you don't particularly like vampires, he is an excellent writer.

If you want a new view of the history of man, seen through the eyes of those participating, read the GEODYSSEY series by Piers Anthony.

During the middle to late 70's my parents took us to several Sci Fi/Book conventions. One memerable one in a large hotel in Leeds, England, was where I bought my first two books, one of which, Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey, has been read many times since then and got me hooked on her pern series of books for many years, but I have not found the later pern books so good and gave up buying them after The Renegades of Pern.

I also like her Crystal Singer series, and Restoree, but many of her others I have given up part way through (The Ship Who Sang, Dinosaur Planet, Decision at Doona)

For Sci Fi I guess my favorite has to be the first 3 Dune novels by Frank Herbert. I gave up trying to read book 4 after a couple of attempts, just could not get into it. The Dosadi Experiment by the same author I also liked a lot.

Recent books I have enjoyed are The Tenderness of Wolves by Stef Penney, and The Interpretation of Murder by Jed Rubenfeld.
