Ok, here we go... After several questions on the Irc channel i've decided to try and write a very basic tutorial for people who are new to NWN and are not too much experienced in windows. Here we go: link selection: http://www.nwvault.com for all your modules and other files that can be used with NWN. (most of the files that are offered at nwvault are in the *.zip or *.rar format to save space, and therefore offering a faster download). * Note: some files come as a *.exe there is nothing wrong with that, but those will install itself to the right place if you duble click it. Rarfiles are to be recognized as a pack of books, and zipfiles as a cabinet with a little wrench clamped on it. If the downloaded files show up as a white square with 3 or 6 little colored squares inside it, you might need one of the programs to extract them. If you don't know how to handle *.zip or *.rar files, please follow one of the links below and install after download: http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm for winrar and http://www.winzip.com/downwz.htm for winzip (save the files to an easy to find place, like your desktop, or "my documents" ) To install winzip or winrar, you have to duble click the file, or single click right and then select "open". No worries, just let the installer run, everything will be placed where it belongs. It might be easier for you to enable the file extention for all known files, so you can see what kind of file you are handeling. Step by step guidance: open windows explorer, go to the bar on top of the window, click extra, and move to folder options. there go to display, and uncheck the box with "[] hide file extentions for known filetypes" (or something similar, i only have the dutch version, so if someone has the proper name for it, i'd like to add that) Then press "Apply to all folders" and then press "ok" You now have enabled all the extentions for the files, so you can see all the different types. Back to your downloaded zip or rar file. Save it in an easy to find location if you like. If the file is in, extract it to /filename/ If you open the folder, you will probably see one or more files, usually a "readme.txt" (read it, it isn't there just for ballast) and either filename.mod or filename.hak. Around here we have had the biggest part already. Now open windows explorer, and go to the neverwinternights game folder. (usually located with a default install at C:\Program Files\NWN\) Try to find the \modules (for *.mod files) and the \hak folders (for *.hak files) and place the files you had extracted in these folders. To get the files there, go to the place you originally created them, and then it's either right click them once, select copy or cut from the drop down menu, and then move to the folder you want them. Then right click, and select paste. (Or instead of selecting and then the drop down menu, you can use [Ctrl] + [C] for copy ([X] for cut) and [Ctrl] + [V] to paste them) I hope this will help you a little bit further with the game. If you have any comments on this, plase give them and we can get the best out of the game. [edit: spelling and some more advice]

I have successfully downloaded all the haks, bmu and erf files. I am stuck on where to put the .tlk file. I don't see any such folder. There is a .tlk file in the basic folder that holds the hak, music, module and premium folders. So I tried putting it there. However, when I try to use the test module that the host sent me, it says that I'm missing a custom talk file. Help.

I've downloaded a few modules from the ign vault. but when I go to play them they are given me the message "custom talk files missing*. When I check the folders that I downloaded for that module, there isn't a tlk file, the .mod, .hak or/and .bmu files. How do I fix this? I using using nwn 1.67 and cep 1.53.

If the custom .tlk file isn't the CEP one, then the mod author should have included one in the download package. If it is the CEP.tlk file, then that needs to be in the \tlk folder. You might need to contact the mod author (most provide an email address in the readme docs.) Make sure you're reading that doc and following the installation instructions as well, because some mods are very particular about how they're to be installed. If you're having problems installing CEP, there should be an installation document that came with it that details the steps needed based on your version of NWN.

nwnmain.exe is the game. if you want to play the game you should have the game. I promise if you READ the NW player's guide, MOST of your questions will be answered, really!
