Playing NWN with your kid

I don't know how many parents out there play NWN with their kids, but I had a blast DM'ing my four year old tonight.

Originally I was going to make a mod for her, but didn't get around to it for a long time. Then I discovered Missing Dragon, which is good but a bit too old for her yet. So then I got guilty and made a very simple mod of two large areas that's an indoor and outdoor zoo, with the outside being snowy and having lots of animal tracks she can follow to find the animals. But she got bored with that and went back to Putt-putt after about a week.

So, tonight she decides she wants to play it again. I still have her PC saved, which has the girl model and has a lot of emotes quickslotted so she can say hello and wave and fall over backwards (her absolute favorite). I get the idea to host her mod in DM client, make a mom and a dad, and alternate who I'm controlling. Then I ask her if she wants anything made, and she starts asking for various animals, which I spawn in. Of course, she wants tigers and lions too and I didn't bother to put DMFI in her mod so I have to toggle invulnerability on everything, and tell her they are all "playing tag," which she thought was hilarious.

Then she got really empowered and decided she wanted a hen house (custom, buildings, open shack, btw), and lots of chickens, which I made and she ran her PC around and had a ball. Then it was finally time for bed, and she made me promise we'd play again tomorrow.

So anyway, the lesson learned is, using DM client and the creator function you can really entertain a 4 year old in NWN.

Kids today! I think I was three times her age before I could operate a computer.

It sounds like you were both pretty clever to find a way to have fun together.

Played again today... for four hours straight. Next issue is going to be putting limits on this.

Sounds great

Guess I've gotta wait a few years before I can introduce my 8 month old to NWN

Missing Dragon IS a great one for kids a bit older than that. My 5-1/2 year old had a lot of fun with it.

But you're right - the DMC can sure entertain kids - I used it with my 5 and 8 year old kids to just spawn things in, and they loved it. The 8 year old can handle real stuff - I actually have to be very careful about what module he plays. I've run him and the 5 year old through U2; the 5 year old needs a fair bit of help of course, and ALWAYS wants to play a paladin

Here's what's wierd - and you've seen this too, Mulu - when my 5 year old was born, we already had NWN - and now he's grown up and can PLAY it. How many PC games can you say that about? That's some longevity.

Yeah, I don't see NWN being removed from my harddrive any year soon. The ability to make mods catered to her will undoubtedly only get more interesting with time. Next I'm going to build her an underwater area, and then it's outer space.

And with SetAppearance, she can be a puppy or a kitty or a shark or whatever she wants to be (the kid loves sharks, go figure).

It's funny, I bought a game called "Zoo Empire" to do something like this with her, but it's just easier to make stuff in NWN, and you get to interact with it. Though admittedly the wife wasn't thrilled to see her in a big brawl with a dragon, a "robot" and a giant crab. It seriously looked like a Japanese monster movie! And here I try so hard not to expose her to any violent TV.

Next I'm going to *have* to put DMFI in, as she likes "fireworks," and her PC is now a sorceress that can cast light and color spray (quickslotted), and summon it's own big black kitty. I suspect a year from now it's going to be full on adventures, and I'm definitely going to have to upgrade her computer and put it on our wireless network. It's good to share addictions with your kid, right?

Absolutely, Mulu, and every male gamer in existence should be thanking you for doing this. It will be important in 20 years, after she gets married, you see, because she'll completely understand her husband playing silly computer games all hours of the night. And it will be a good thing because she too will be off building NWN9.

What a great idea! My daughter is five, and my son turns four next month- both of them are already just about as computer-savvy as I was at 20 (with some spelling issues, of course). They do enjoy watching me play the game, so I might go ahead and build a little mod for them.

Thanks for the idea

Here's another example of a veteran D&Der adapting the game to a (far) younger audience (with pics):

Now I have to say that this is a very cute story. Like someone mentioned, brought a smile to my face. A little fantasy world for your kid to play in, I love it. Any screenshots, per chance?

If you're wanting to play with your kids who are too young to read, you might consider setting up some kind of voice sw like teamspeak and you can add your voice acting skills to the pallette

Unnecessary when she's sitting right next to you. She's used to me imitating character voices from her books.

Alright, so I made my first "quest" for her after reading that enworld article. Remember, this is a four year old. I placed four glowing cystals throughout her fantasy world, and each one had a like colored gem. One was in her house, one in her winter playground, one in a sea cave, and one underwater in a coral reef (worms tilesets rock!). After she collected all four, she gave them to a red robot on the beach which then took her on a wooden ship to play in the clouds (arcanespace tileset). There she met a flying gold dragon who made lots of neat special effects for her. She absolutely loved it!

Next time, she's going to visit all the planets (again thanks to arcanespace tileset), though I haven't decided yet what her quest is going to be. I'll have to start taking screenshots too. When I get the bugs all worked out, I'll post the mods.

She likes her PC to always be carrying a flag, go figure.

Having been in one of your games, Mulu, I have no doubt that she was dazzled. I'm quite sure that she is having a ball and - best of all - she's playing a game with Dad!!
