On the boat ride Phil's new armor had chaffed and rubbed areas of his skin raw. If he had not been so consumed with drowning, as he imagined the boat sinking, he might have asked Torrin what to do.

As they left to go to the barracks after speaking to the Duke, a man that thoroughly impressed Phil, the pain of blisters and open soars made him cringe. He made his way to Torrin, lowered his head and quietly explained the situation. Frowning and waiting for a response from his companion, he just knew this was further punishment for losing his gear.

Torrin sat in silent revery ontop of his bunk in the Baron's barracks and came out of it suddenly as he heard Phil approach. He folded his hands together and asked softly, "What is it, Phil?"

He sat silent for a few moments after hearing of Phil's plight, thinking. His eyes lit up and he turned around, rummaging briefly through his sack, before pulling out a jar of a salve material that emitted a pungent aroma as Torrin undid the top. "Rub some of this on your...wounds, Phil, and it should provide some relief. Unfortunanlty, I cannot do anything about the smell, but it does help the body adapt to the wearing of heavy armor. Apply it daily before you sleep and you should notice a difference within a week's time. I suggest you apply it away from the others. Also, try not to get it wet because it washes off very easily." He screwed the cap back on and handed the jar to Phil.

Phil wrinkled up his nose as he closed the jar but gratefully thanked Torrin, "I owe ya one, Torrin."

On one hand he thought the smell was another punishment for losing his body armor, on the other hand it might keep the females at an arms distance! He opened the jar and took a big whiff. It burned his eyes, Yup that will work for sure!

Phil moved to a far corner bunk and began to liberally apply the salve. The immediate sting was shocking but the pain went away quickly; all of the pain. He shoved the ear plugs he had stowed in his pack, a gift from Pappy, straight up each nostril and fell back on the cot and went blissfully asleep breathing loudly through his mouth like a car wash vacuum stuck in the ash tray.

Oki spent some of her time working on her reports... some of her time looking over old personal videos and photographs she kept of herself and Tom on her computer to reminisce of her lost love... and most of her time in the present discussing plans with the group for their next day's adventure. There was also time for general rest and relaxation, meals and hopefully there was time for a bath; but, she'd live without it. She had learned to keep herself clean on the trail long ago.

Adrian

Adrian took the time to relax and rest, though it doesn’t look so good while in the middle of a mission, if can be called like that, but in any case, there was not much to do. He first sat, studying the shadows around him, wondering what could mean, how to master them, for sure not an easy process, more over, something that would take some time, if ever could be accomplished.

While Adrian’s was sitting, lost in thought watching shadows and his surroundings, he doesn’t realize what is happening to him. Somehow he begins to fade, disappear, unaware of it. For a moment there was Adrian, suddenly there was no Adrian there.

Vulcanos Mencius:

The breeze tugged at Vulcanos' hair as he stood near the bow of the ship. Seaguard was not far now.

Why would Maldrigar want a stone tablet from some forsaken dungeon in the Mirkmire? And why send us and not a presumably more reliable contingent of the Duke's guards? Camar had been weakened in the last few years, but something didn't seem to make sense. Maldrigar must be keeping a secret from all of us, including me.

Vulcanos frowned. He didn't particularly like the feeling of being in the dark.

I suppose the best way to determine what is going on is to find the tablet. Hopefully we can do so quickly, and without excessive losses.

At the moment I have 1 confirmed no-show for tonight, another that hasn't yet signed up, and two "maybes". We'll see how it is at game time, but if we don't have 5 confirmed at game time I am going to call the session for this week.

Another note for down the road: both Christmas and New Year's Eve fall on Monday this year, so it looks like we will have another hiatus for a few weeks this winter. If you cannot make any sessions between now and then, please post or PM me as soon as you know your schedule, so I can plan ahead.

"I don't like this one, not one bit," Joe confided, taking his sergeant aside. "We don't know where we're going, not really. We're going to have to search for this place we're after on foot while walking through marshy ground and on the lookout for these walking lizards."

"Worse, it's walking lizards who know the place. At least the Orcs weren't on their own turf, but these... this has all the makings of one big Charlie Foxtrot, sergeant. Pass the word along - Bad Boys is go. We take no chances here."

Joe looked hopefully at his sergeant. "You have any experience of terrain like this?"

Not a bit

"Not a bit sir," said Rusty. Admittedly he was old, but not so old that he fought in the swamps of Vietnam.
His mind though wasn't so much on the terrain, but on those words that prisoner said. Two phrases he repeated. Why speak at all? And if you do speak, why only say those exact words over and over again? When US soldiers are captured alive, you're supposed to give you serial number over and over again. Was it something like that?
At least they had a recording of the words to study...

Adrian

Adrian walks ahead, scouting, searching, not such a nice place to be. A swamp! He heard words about that kind of terrain from veterans; others come from tales of the times of Vietnam, but none of his liking. Adrian is a scout, a hunter, a knife in the night, the Night Stalker, but all that on different ground, more used to desert, even urban guerrilla, not swamps. Here the tracks are confusing, but it is not only that, the sounds, more over the shadows surrounding him, unknown to his past skills and training.

Adrian knees to study the ground, wet and soft. His eye catches something to his left. Or was just a mere sensation? Adrian turns but sees nothing, though feels uneasy. He moves slowly, in soft retreat from the spot where he is now, looking for a better hiding, tempted to fall into shadows, but the swamp is so hostile to him, a strange sensation.

Adrian steps backs, taking cover on the vegetation, hiding from everything. His eyes scan the area, unable to see more than the insects, snakes and other usual creatures of a swamp. But he still feels uneasy, eyes going from one place to another. Suddenly, he catches something, eyes fixed in one spot, unable to define what it is. Or was that he did not see a thing there? Was just mere instinct?

Searching deep into the vegetation, finally he sees it. But what is it? That’s not a snake, for sure not a human. Two points aiming at him, resembling that old sensation of being watched, were being the prey instead of the hunter. Adrian slowly moves one step to his left, looking for better cover and improves the angle of sight.

… Pain, all becomes dark.

Torrin

Torrin stood looking out at the vast swamp, searching for any sign of Adrian or of the lizard folk. He knew they would have to assault the lizard folk's mound if they were going to rescue Adrian from being that night's main course. He mumurred a silent prayer to the Shinning Father as he tried to wipe off the muck from his equipment.

Oki had had assignments before in the jungles and swamps of a whole host of terrains; typically with experienced guides... anywhere to get a good story.

She'd reported in the Iraqi War effort imedded with troops. She'd been with special ops unit doing a raid on a drug cartel for a public relations project for the DEA. She'd trapsed along with a medical doctor trying to discover some special properties of nearly extinct plant life in Africa. She'd reported on Tsunami victims in Southeast Asia. She'd investigated serial murder cases in the swamplands of Southeastern United States. These were only some of the assignments she'd been on.

This still didn't quite prepare her for some of the things she was seeing in this new world. She didn't like it here; but, like it or not, Adrian was in trrouble and she set her mind to help them rescue him, even if it meant going into the heart of this primitive community. There would be very little time to piece together a coherent story out of this... she'd try; but, Adrian's life was ... more important than the story. She realized she was forming a friendship with this unit. The loss of Tom left a huge void in her life and this group came along and rescued her and took her in as one of their own in a way. She needed that to fill the constant aching of the void in her life with the loss of her fiance.

With Adrian captured, she felt a sense of urgency that she had to help get him back somehow. It was important to her that the unity of the group be restored. She was next to useless... but being next to useless is better than being useless. She could heal and a few other tricks. Her music seemed to encourage the others inn battle to do better.

"I'm worried about Adrian," she finally spoke up, "My singing seems to encourage you in combat to be at your best and I also be ready with healing. I'm not sure what else I can do; but, I'll be on the look out for things I can help with."

Two and a half magazines. That was all he had left. Two and a half mag for the M16, and three for the pistol. And barely a few grenades. Suddenly, it didn't seem like that much...

But I'm going to make it just enough.

"Nantle, Phil... Phil, focus. Here's how we play this. Walk soft, but when trouble starts, we open up with everything. Bullets, grenades, swords, blow them away, hack them up. We take them down and we take them down hard and we make them think that all Hell is coming for them."

"Oki, Torrin, Vulcanos... you're not part of my command. I know that." And I guess so do you. "But from the sound of it, these lizards have got some big... thing down there, and opposition's going to be fierce one way or the other. I'm asking you to save some hocus-pocus for when things get serious... you got that?"

Now here comes the bit where Nantle busts a gut, the Lieutenant thought. "We've got weapons. A spare rifle, our pistols. If any of you three feel like dishing out some semi-automatic US Army justice on these fish bastards, we've got the guns for you. It's easy - you just point, and pull the trigger. Up to you."

Joe pulled his own pistol, clicking off the safety, and held it up to demonstrate - taking reassurance in the weight and the sound of the thing, in a way that he never could from even the mightiest magic sword. The weariness from the travel, and the despair and homesickness that had clouded his thoughts, were gone; even the existential doubt over the morality of being a soldier had no chance against the simple wish to get those people out of that mound, and to bring righteous fury down on the ones who'd taken them. I've never lost a man yet. Only been in command for less than a month, admittedly...

"Aguirre and the other hosta- prisoners are the priority, but when they're secure... then we finish this - Clear?" He gave Oki a glance, and added enigmatically, "No more Toms."

By God, he wasn't going to start losing men now. Not today.

Phil furrowed his brow and tried to look mean, hoping to hide any confusion he had about his orders. His small mind reeled with indecision. How was he going to shoot a gun, wield a sword and throw a grenade all at the same time?

The reassurance from the Lieutanant that there would be "no more Tom's" meant to her, that there would be no more executions of hostages on the Lieutanant's watch. This reassured Oki. He meant to get everyone out alive pronto. This brightened her mood considerably. She really trusted him and the squad and the others now.

She did not; however, take him up on the offer to carry and use a weapon. She was still very much personally uncomfortable with handling weapons and did not want to be a part of that aspect of the operations. She was quite content with her role and knew she'd be extremely busy as it was to be running around shooting poorly. She was much more effective in the role that she had carved out for herself already.

Vulcanos arched an eyebrow and smiled. "I will be ready. I advise letting the enemy approach us if you wish me to use my ...hocus-pocus... I have some spells that will cover an area and would hurt you too, if you were too close to the intended target."

The group seemed a bit tense, so Vulcanos laughed. "I plan on roasting some lizard steaks later, which should be an improvement over the swill they fed us in Seaguard. Don't look so glum, my friends, those lizards have the brain of a year old babe and no better toilet manners to boot. Anyway, what have we to lose but our lives?" He grinned again, and hoped the others would loosen up a bit. Men fought best when their fear was leavened with confidence.

Phil chuckled, "They do look a bit like gators, and gators -are- good eatin'" Phil licked his chops and then looked puzzled once more muttering, "but I never heard a gator talk..." looking back to his weapons he again began to consider how to wield them all at once.
