Doing the 'Right' Thing

"... I'm just saying," argued the Lieutenant, as the battered squad boarded the Darter. "You're right, primary objective is to get home and alert HQ to the impending attack. But Maldrigar can get us there, whenever we leave. If we leave, we can't come back. And..."

Joe looked for some words to sway the hard-ass Sergeant.

"... and we're making a difference here. A real difference. It's not just battering down people's doors, fighting insurgents and living in a P-O-S country that hates you. We're doing some good here. We've saved two towns. Maybe we can help get this one back on its' feet by dealing with their problem - not as mercenaries but as god-damn human beings. When was the last time you actually felt good about being a soldier?"

ooc: edited/moved to reflect above post

(During their boatride, if nothing else happens beforehand)

Inspired by the Lieutenant's words and with the continual rise in incidents of disregard for civil rights in this world... Oki went off to the side in private and loaded up Microsoft Encarta and looked up the Declaration of Independence and read through some of the impact that it had on society. She then realized it wasn't her call to go around imposing her culture on these people and even if she attempted, the result would be disasterous and would cost many lives even though the end result might be beneficial to these people. It was not a decision to be taken lightly, if the group decided to proceed along these lines. She compared the importance of sharing the concept of basic human rights with these people with the consequences of interfering with a culture that might not be ready for such a radical change that could result in dire results.

She closed the program and put the thought away. She reports the news, not makes it.

Consequences of a World of Magic at War

Oki occassionally used to visit her sister's family. Their kids had gotten Oki hooked on an Anime series on Nikelodeon Channel called Avatar: The Last Air Bender. In it, the world was a hodge podge of Asian cultures mixed with magics based on the four elements and was very martial arts and spiritual in nature. It was also about a world of magic and strange creatures that had been at war for over one hundred years. True there was more to the show than this; but, what was relevant to their current situation was that once the world had been at relative peace and now there was one hundred years of death and destruction due to the terrible powers that were available to all sides.

With the unease that existed between Camar and its four neighbors, Oki again wondered about what this world was in for, if talk of civil rights and such led to massive civil unrest and anything worse. This world was quite capable of delivering massive destruction upon itself given the pushes in those directions.

Phil's legs were feeling considerably better but his stomach began to immediately turn upside down as he boarded the ship. He took his position at the rail and dug his fingers as deeply into the wood as he could manage. "Gators are better than icebergs" he muttered to himself as he gazed over the water intent on finding anything that resembled ice.

It was enough to occupy his mind and keep him from emptying the contents of his stomach. But it did nothing to ease his fear of drowning on this rickety old boat. Look for ice,he thought, find it before it finds the boat!

ooc: i'm taking extra precautions keeping my head elevated and keeping warm when I sleep, so that I don't get the ol' post-nasal drip straight to bronchitis in one night like I have a strong history of getting.

Some of you might remember when I ended up in the hospital with pneumonia for four days a few years ago. :/

Vulcanos noted Torrin's desire to speak. "Let us move to the bow, that our conversation not impose on our friends, Torrin." Sensing no objection, he moved away from the others. "So, priest, tell me, what can I do for you?"

Vulcanos Mencius:

Vulcanos noted the exchange between Lieutenant Joe and the Sergeant. It seemed possible that the strangers may be staying for longer than expected.

He approached the Lieutenant later, after the boat was well underway. "There is much work to be done in the Grand Duchy. Our land seems besieged, and our people cry out for succor. It seems that you could help many, by only delaying your departure for a time. From the words you spoke to the Sergeant, it seems you yourself are considering this. Do you think that extending your stay here is possible?"

Hey all, please don't forget to sign up for the game if you intend to play. I use the sign-ups to help determine whether to cancel/postpone a session, and to help me figure out what NPCs I need to include each week. At the moment I have only four signed up, but only one person has indicated that they will not be present tonight.

Adrian listens to the Lieutenant’s words and raises an eyebrow. As usual he remains apart, a custom that comes from his childhood, but somehow reinforced of late, at least in such strange land. Then he moves to see Phil, worried about his concerns. Adrian just had learned to like that big man, naïve but good hearted. He gets close to Phil and says to him.

"Hey my friend, take it easy. Nothing will happen. I’ve being wondering something; do you know how to swim? If not, I suggest that you remove that heavy armor while we are in the water, sailing, so if anything happens at least I’ll have a chance to drag you out to safe place, instead of sink with you. You don’t have to worry Phil, I won’t let you alone, and if you go down I’ll go down".

Oki heard Vulcanos' offer to the Lieutenant and hoped this was not a prelude to the negative aspects of getting involved here. If they were to get involved, she hoped that there was a positive influence that the squad could bring to this world. They were afterall, more than instruments of destruction... they were men of honor, courage and commitment.

She had put her faith and trust in the Lieutenant and knew that whatever his decisions were, that they would be the best that he was humanly capable of delivering given his training and experience.

She anxiously watched as the events unfolded in front of her that might shape the future of this world to come.

volunteering

For the third time Nantle hissed as he rubbed his sore shoulder. He just had to volunteer to open the chest and get trapped in a locked room with stone giants. It was foolish, volunteers are the first to end up dead.

Joe frowned, a little conflicted, as Vulcanos joined the conversation between him and his sergeant. "Well," he began, after a long pause. "I don't... we can't stay here THAT long, Vulcanos. We do have a duty to our country, and the oaths we swore on joining the US Army. But I can't see why we can't clear up a few problems on our way out."

The rail creaked at the increased pressure created by Phil's grip, "SINK!? We are going to sink?!" Phil's eye filled with terror. "I knew this would happen! I just knew it!" Suddenly his small mind wrapped itself around parts of Double A's words and he began quickly unbuckling his armor. It clattered loudly to the deck. Phil startled himself and he grabbed Double A by the shoulders, "Did you hear that?! We been hit by an Iceberg!"

Oki noticed Rusty rubbing his sore shoulder again. She really appreciated him volunteering to get the tablet and avoid the stone golems. To her, that's the stuff true heroes are made of. He might think differently from the look on his face; but, she'd be sure to tell both sides of the story.

Meanwhile, she went over and asked Rusty, "Do you want me to massage your shoulder a bit? It looks painful." She didn't want to come across as anything other than as offering a simple muscle massage because that's all it was to her. He deserved too much respect to imply anything other than that.

The price of fortitude

It was a funny thought that crossed the LT's mind on the way back to Camar, and as Lady Tertullia and the High Priest guy walked off, and the squad waited at the door to Maldrigar's place, it surfaced again. He dwelled on ghost pirates, and walking skeletons, and wizards, and time travel, and all the other crazy crap they'd had thrown at them in the past two, three weeks.

And then he wondered, How have we not gone mad?

It was a damn good question. A lot of basic things that the squad took for granted were being questioned, or in some cases, completely overturned. Fundamental things, things we'd learned from a lifetime of experience. Ghosts weren't real; magic was just for show; men didn't come back from the dead. One by one, the rules by which they all defined 'normal' life were being stripped away.

And yet the 'squad' - and it was funny, the way how he'd started to think of their pet journalist as part of the 'squad' by now - seemed to take it all in their stride. Oki could do all kinds of crazy things. She and Adrian could turn themselves invisible. Phil had witnessed animals appearing out and disappearing with a bang and a flash, and he was less scared of that than he was of an actual real boat sinking. Even Nantle seemed to have caught a bit of it without realising; there he was, chopping monsters up with a gigantic axe, while his rifle dangled from his back, and he didn't seem to register that as odd.

Perhaps the answer was in their culture, somewhere... or pop culture, at least. It made him smile to think of it, but the first time he'd seen the walking dead, the only thing he had been able to think about at that moment was Thriller. Ghost pirates? Seen the movie. The 'magic potions'? Energy drinks; really, really good ones. Torrin and Vulcanos's magic? Well... who hadn't heard of magicians?

And that was perhaps the thing that shielded them from the mind-breaking craziness of it all. Somewhere, somehow, everything unusual or strange in this world reminded him - a little - of some movie or book or comic or... something, anything. All that imaginary information, crammed into their heads, giving them the power to take the strange and unfathomable and the incredible and simply shrug it off.

On the boat, he'd come to that conclusion, and thanked MTV and Hollywood and everything else that they'd insulated his men from the horror.

But then and there, in the sunshine, standing beneath the frescoes of the Temple and the tall tower of the Wizards, talking to the priest and the lady, he realised the price they paid; just as they were distanced from the horror, so they were from the wonder, and the awe.

And he reflected, That's a steep price.

He sighed, quietly, and shook off the sudden melancholy. Things to do.

"So," he asked his assembled men and woman. "What do you guys think? If we have the time, and it's gonna take the wizard a while to figure out this stone block, you guys feel like going to the party?"

In the temple

Torrin sat meditating in the High Priest's office while the High Priest was talking with the outlanders. His expression was far from serene, however, as the events of the previous weeks played themselves over and over in his mind. How far have I come, he thought to himself, and how far am I yet to go? Is this a journey I am meant to take? Am I able to do so? He started at the opening of the door and turned to see the High Priest enter. He rose and bowed deeply in one swift motion. "Your Holiness, I am honored that you have agreed to see me. There is much I wish to discuss with you..." He waited patiently for Jeriff to wave him to a seat before continuing. "The outlanders, your holiness, they are...different. Far different than I had first thought, yet they have adapted quickly to our customs. But while their change may be for the better, I worry that mine has not. Where once I was pleased to honor the Shinning Father, now I feel that that is not enough. I feel...a yearning to expose and destroy this new evil, but I fear I am becoming ambitious and that I am becoming someone I am not..." His voice trailed off as he stared at Jerrif's desk, searching for an answer eluding his grasp.

Oki realized what the festival was... it was just an illusion... but a necessary illusion to keep the peace. It would certainly be nice to experience some R&R, even if it was a bit like The Matrix for the people of this kingdom. They needed their R&R from the Plague and Orcs, etc, as much as anyone.

It would be nice to relax for a few days.

Oki kept quiet about her feelings though, so as not to stir up trouble. These people seemed to know every drop of conversation and every thought. It was the most abuse of surveillance power since the conspiracy nuts on Earth complained about the Patriot Act and Cold War surveillance techniqueces. Almost makes you want to strap on an aluminum foil hat and hum 24/7.

I BEG of you all... PLEASE can we start the next session in Zala's, so we can sell all this extra crap we are carrying, so I don't have to do the Lindsy Wagner Bionic Woman impersonation again and waste half the session walking from point A to point B?
