OOC: Happy New Year!

***

IC: A few hours ago, he'd never heard of Trolls. It was a strange name, for stranger creatures; it came awkwardly to his mouth. Long-limbed, green-skinned and foul-smelling, like nothing he'd ever smelled in his world. At least the Orcs and the Saurans had the rough shape of men, overmuscled or scaled as they had been, but these things? They were stretched scarecrows, with limbs longer than broomsticks that unfolded strangely when they ran, or struck at a man. Even the walking dead had been men once. But these were, in so many ways, unnatural.

And yet the strangest thing, Joe reflected, was how natural it felt to be killing them. With bullets, arrows or swords, it didn't seem to matter. It had felt right to be cutting these things down or blowing them apart, even before he'd seen the pile of human skulls by the altar. This needed doing, he thought to himself. It didn't matter if they'd come across the trolls by accident, or if someone had pointed them here on purpose; it was good that these things were gone.

He'd ordered the squad outside; to gather up all they'd found in the burrow and leave. It stank too much to rest in there. As they sat and bandaged their wounds, Joe thought he caught a glimpse of a peak through a gap in the canopy of trees; a reminder of the rocky terrain that lay ahead, and the grim business that had brought them here.

Just over a month ago I was in Baghdad, he thought. And yet it feels so strange to even think of killing other men.

***

OOC Again: My HD crashed over the Christmas period, and I lost all my haks. I'll need someone to point me to the ones needed for this game.

Phil pondered. This was a real feat for Phil. Trolls should be under bridges, he thought. That was what Pappy had told him when he was a kid. Trolls were supposed to eat goats! He knew his Pappy was not wrong about much, but Trolls! His Pappy must have read the wrong book. He could still picture the cover that fascinated him as a child. The "Three Billy Goats Gruff" was one of Phil's favorite bed time stories.

Well, maybe they -do- eat goats, he thought, but they sure seemed to like to try to eat men and women too!

Torrin

They had cleaned the nest and possibly saved the town, Torrin thought, though he held no illusions that more trolls might decide this was a good place to camp if they caught wind of the smell. He could only hope that the local garrison could keep the placed sweeped and possibly discourage any new trolls from thinking this was a safe place. As he sat near the campfire, he mended the leather grip on his hammer and thought over the experiences he had so far. Very different from the clergy. I hope everything's okay back home...

just one obstacle after another

Nantle didn't consider himself a strategist. Its one of the reasons he stayed at the rank Sergeant. Good at shouting, not crazy about thinking tactics. But this obstacle after obstacle when it came to getting home was getting to him.
They had to think a few moves ahead, maybe have a couple of alternate plans when it came to getting home. The question was, could they have a breather long enough to find a alternate way home.

This adventure is turning out to be more complex than anything, testing Adrian’s skill at maximum almost each step. He knees on the ground, looking for some mud to use it over his body. It is time to mix his scent with the surroundings, though by now he doesn’t even recognize him, not that he has lack a cleaning discipline, but this place was so strange to him and the others that even the slightest things are different. He uses some mud on hands, some parts of the body and even face, but just enough to mix his scent, not much to look too dirty. Adrian smiles thinking about what the Sergeant will say to him once he sees him.

Vulcanos Mencius:

Vulcanos felt good. Fully recovered from his dungeon ordeal of over a month ago now, a nest of trolls cleaned out....

Trolls, who would eat small Camarian children if given the chance. Ah, who would have thought, Vulcanos the hero...saving the local peasants from harm. Along with our new-found allies, now kept from going home yet one more time.

Well, isn't that what I signed up for, so many years ago at the doors of the Mage Guild - keeping the people of my land from harm? For that, and for other reasons...

Oki kept writing her reports; but, there were times... Oki sometimes wondered if they were ever going home... ever truly... ever honestly really going home. Just one excuse after another why they were stuck on this world. She sometimes liked it; sometimes despised it; but, always it remained her new found prison in some ways. Some might try to convince her to call it home; but to her it was fast becoming a prison with magical boundaries.

So too were the possibility of her reports ever seeing the public air waves. Even if she made it back home... the chances that she wasn't locked up and labeled insane if she tried to push these films and stories as real became greater and greater... the other possibility was that either the government, military or some research facility lock all of them up and study them and the records ad-infinitum. The likelihood of her stories ever reaching public airwaves was evn slimmer, what reputable station would take a chance on these as legit? Most likely she'd be laughed out of her profession as another option to the others.

Still, she continued to report the events, in the vain hope that the truth be told.

I'll take the heat

Nantle couldn't stop thinking what a stupid, idiotic, dumb thing he done. Why did he have to do that? Why didn't he do the smart thing?
Maybe it was what that rebel leader said. How he finally just had enough and lost everything helping a poor man. Maybe he was so damn tired of having to serve some Duke who pretty much had just kidnapped them and coerced them to do work for him. Taking a deep breath he turned to Joe.
"Sir, there's only one thing to do. I was the one to take the first swing and I'll take full responsibility. We can't go becoming rebels, the Duke is our best hope getting home," said Nantle as he scratched the back of his head.
"I'll take what justice they have for me."

Oki listened to the Sergeant's take on the situation. She was upset with him on the one hand, on the other... "The Duke summoned us here to do his bidding... in essence, he kidnapped us and blackmailed us to do his bidding to wipe out his enemies one by one. Evidence suggests that his Captain of the Guard, Brannix Delgaron is responsible for the Duke's faulty intelligence sources and manipulating the Duke into these reckless acts. The Duke has many enemies, including the orcs, Lord Kalibos,,, there's the shaggy orc shaman... I'm uncomfortable saying his name for some reason... the Blue Empires, the Rebels, and who knows who else he's pissed off by this point? They're not going to be satisfied 'til we're either dead, gone or killed off every last enemy on the planet for them and they are the supreme gods of this planet. So, while I'm just a civilian reporter that observes and supports you in the best way that I'm able... while I might respect your right to nobly stand up and accept justice for your actions which you initiated and hope that it all ends there and we end up going home one day... I'm not sure that I feel comfortable going back to my cushy lifestyle on your blood nor do I think that the Duke is going to accept that you are solely responsible. We may all have to go back and see this through... unless you plan on taking over this planet or living in caves the rest of your life. We may have to figure out some honorable way out of this mess."

Torrin stared at Rusty for a few minutes without saying anything. Finally, he snorted and spoke, "That's very noble of you, Rusty, but we are all complicent in the attack on Brannix, whether we actually struck him or merely watched. I don't know what the Duke will do, but you have made us a powerful enemy today, one that will not stop until we are all dead or behind bars. I can only hope your foolish actions turn out to be the correct ones."

Oki looked at Rusty and nodded.

Oki played back the video...

General Bones: [Shout] You hear a loud cry from up ahead, a woman's voice.

Lt. Abnett: What the...
Brannix Delgaron: *laughs* Do not take us for fools, woman.
Vulcanos: *sighs*
Brannix Delgaron: We know you were supplying the...
Brannix Delgaron: Ah, well.
Brannix Delgaron: Look who's finally made it back.
Olivia Demitris: Please, I didn't...
Spec. Adrian: What seems to be the problem, soldier?
Lt. Abnett: Care to explain what's going on, Captain?
Blackcloak: Silence, wench! *slaps her*
Spec. Adrian: *restrains*
Brannix Delgaron: See for yourself. *nods toward an open book lying on the ground*
Brannix Delgaron: She was supplying the rebels with foodstuffs.
Pvt. Phil: *frowns*
Brannix Delgaron: Tough wench, but we'll get the truth out of her. Before she hangs.
Spec. Adrian: Torture?
Torrin: That's hardly proof, Brannix.
Lt. Abnett: You seem... pretty certain about this, Brannix.
Brannix Delgaron: We knew someone from around here was supplying them.
Brannix Delgaron: Too many wagons heading south for such a tiny community.
Torrin: Suspicious, yes, but not enough proof to justify her treatment.
Brannix Delgaron: We don't know who her contact in Camar is... but we will.
Brannix Delgaron: *looks at her* Oh, we will.
Brannix Delgaron: This isn't your concern, priest. This is a secular matter.
Spec. Adrian: *scratchs chin unconfortable*
Brannix Delgaron: I am the Duke's authority, here.
Lt. Abnett: Ok, that's enough. The rebels are gone, Brannix. It's over. We took care of them.
Torrin: *crosses arms*
Brannix Delgaron: Well now.
Lt. Abnett: You don't need to beat up women any more, we took care of your problem.
Torrin: And I will ensure the Duke learns of this ill treatment.
Vulcanos: [Whisper] You need to distract the Blackcloaks.
Brannix Delgaron: Looks like we only have one more to finish off, and we're done here.
Lt. Abnett: Hold it! *goes for pistol*
Sgt. "Rusty": hey Brannix
Brannix Delgaron: *lifts his sword menacingly*
Spec. Adrian: Err... don't think so
Spec. Adrian: HEY!!
Brannix Delgaron: Back off, lieutenant. This does not concern you.
Torrin: *frowns*
Lt. Abnett: You sure?
Spec. Adrian: That is not way to treat a human being
Pvt. Phil: *points up* Look at that bird
Lt. Abnett: I'm feeling pretty concerned.
Torrin: Hush, Phil.
Blackcloak: Hey!
Sgt. "Rusty": Run woman!
Spec. Adrian: Now what captain? *grins
Lt. Abnett: Damn!
Spec. Adrian: stop

Brannix Delgaron: *falls down*

Spec. Adrian: Ahhh... finally had my chance
Lt. Abnett: HOLD IT!
Brannix Delgaron: *struggles* Let me go!
Spec. Adrian: Leave him be Sergeant... we have him
Lt. Abnett: ... dammit.
Brannix Delgaron: [Shout] RELEASE ME!
Torrin: *glares at Rusty*
Lt. Abnett: Where is she? Where's the shopkeep?

*the shopkeeper ran off into the woods*

Spec. Adrian: yeah... give me few minutes with him
Lt. Abnett: She get away?

Brannix Delgaron: *pushes himself to his feet as the spell wears off, trailing blood from several vicious wounds*

Sgt. "Rusty": sorry sir, had Vul cast invisibility on her so she wouldn't get hurt
Torrin: Joe, Rusty, Adrian, come to me.
Brannix Delgaron: The... Duke... will... hear... of this...
Brannix Delgaron: *staggers off*
Spec. Adrian: let me finish Sir
Lt. Abnett: You have pushed us and pushed us and spat on us even as you sued us, you bastard! DID YOU EXPECT US TO TAKE IT?
Lt. Abnett: ... hell.
Torrin: We cannot return now.
Lt. Abnett: *as you used us... heh
Lt. Abnett: *grits teeth, angry*
Spec. Adrian: So.. now are we rebels as well?

A sudden quiet falls over the village...

Torrin: Thanks to Rusty, we are now outlaws.
Lt. Abnett: ... I guess we are.
Vulcanos: I don't think you needed to attack Brannix.
Torrin: Again, your actions put us in jeapordy.
Sgt. "Rusty": sorry Torrin, didn't know you got such a kick out of torture
Spec. Adrian: WE brought a great ill upon the village
Vulcanos: The girl could have escaped, and I would have ......
Oki: why?

"He's not solely responsible." The LT holstered his pistol, jaw clenched, face twitching as he kept a rein on his temper. "You know that, don't you, Sergeant? And not just because we all took a swing at that bastard. You're not solely responsible because I am your commanding officer! Do you remember what that is? If you'd've shot an Iraqi peacekeeper for beating a woman, they would have us both in front of a board because I am in command!"

Joe rubbed his face, trying to slow his breathing. "Augh. And - and we can't show them that video. Forget about the torture crap, that shows us very clearly hacking and gunning down two of those men, not to mention Vulcanos's magic." His voice changed as he addressed the two natives. "I'm sorry. We've... none of us were thinking straight after this trip. We've kinda messed this up."

"And the crazy thing is, Brannix was probably right, that woman... she probably was supplying Kelantis with food. He was getting it from somewhere. Either way, I'm pretty sure His Grace knows what his dog's like when it comes to slapping around them rebels, he'd... he'd have to be monumentally stupid not to, surely?"

Joe thought for a heartbeat.

"Where'd she go, anyway? Didn't someone say something about a contact in Camar?"

Oki nodded to the Lieutenant, "The video shows all of us as complicite at one level or another. The guns flashing, spells flying, even the bear. The fact that I videoed it without trying to stop it or running away even incriminates me. We're all in this together. The supplies came from the shopkeeper obviously to the Rebels... it doesn't take a rocket scientist ... or a sage ... to figure that out. You're right on that account, Lieutenant. The Duke and Brannix will know that and will expect us to come to our senses in that regard. Whoever is supplying them is someone with connections in the city, like one of the major shopkeepers or highly placed citizens probably. I could also point out someone that sells minor things like lockpicks such as this." Oki displays a lockpick she picked up in Camar from way back. She continues, "I doubt he has the connections by himself to pull off something of this caliber since he didn't even have a stand to sell from."

Joe frowned, darkly. "What with the way things are going lately, I wouldn't be surprised if the contact was Lady Tertullia, god rest her soul."

He looks around the village, feeling the strain. "Well... we can't stick around here, so we're going to have to think of something. Torrin, Vulcanos... if you wanted to split at this point and take your chances with the Duke, I wouldn't... I wouldn't blame you."
