"Just do it, Nantle. Deal with these... things. Get us out of here. Whatever it takes." Doing whatever it took was, after all, what the Sergeant had shown he was best at. "You have operational command, Sergeant Nantle."

There is a heartbeat's pause, and then the Lieutenant adds, "Please."

Oooh, nice twist!

I'll give TheBaldMan a pass on IC posting, given the radical shift in locale from last time, and count the rest of you for full-party posting.

And since we've moved into the next chapter of the campaign, I'll bump the XP award to 900/1350xp per week.

Oki had questions about the plane that they were in: the theological implications, the sheer nature of the place, whether it was what it seemed to be, multiplicity of the universes, and many more... they were all irrelevant now as their sheer existance was at stake.

A mad man sent them here... correction... Torrin's long trusted mentor lost faith in his god when he was tested beyond his breaking point. Going beyond his breaking point made him seek alternative solutions in the form of the dark arts... a path that most others would consider an extreme overreaction and psychologically unbalanced... in other words... mad.

Vulcanos Mencius:

As they rested amongst the carcasses of the dead demon vermin, smoking sulfer vents all about, Vulcanos recounted what Velessa, the marilith demon, had shown him.

"We went up a hill and then to the right, and there was the portal. It was inactive, and had two larges stones, both with arcane auras of some kind. In between the stones stood a curved archway. Velessa said that the archway would be activated and could be used to return us to our - my - home, once the proper demon essences were placed on the stones. One stone radiated heat, and one cold, so I suspect that Zurgon's essence would be required for the cold one and Hezarin's essence for the hot one. However, I was unable to verify that this would in fact activate the portal, and in any case I am unsure how we could know it would lead back to Camar without going through it."

Vulcanos paused a moment. "Trusting Velessa does not seem like a winning game..."

Let's Get Serious

"Unfortunately, we gave away all the probable bargaining chips we had, so I'm not sure we have much room to manoeuver, here, you know?"

"Speaking of which," continued the Lieutenant in a firmer, stronger voice than before, "I suggest we take five here. And while we do, I also suggest that we empty our packs. We've come across a lot of crazy stuff on our travels - some of it I've seen, some of it I've not seen, like that dagger you're carrying, Vulcanos. That was fine before. Taking trophies is kind of a part of being a soldier. But right now, we need everything we have or we're going to die. And if we die here, then... we're trapped. We'll never leave. They won't let us. Trust me on this. I don't know how I know, but I know. We'll be stuck in this Hell forever."

"So I don't want to end up in this place for the rest of eternity," Joe carried on, "only to find out that one of us was carrying a spare sword or weapon or piece of magic jewellery or whatever that could have saved us. So, empty your crap onto the floor. We're going to go through every available resource we have, and we're going to use it all because otherwise, we're not going home."

"And another thing," he went on, apparently in full flow. "Torrin's hammer and Nantle's axe and even Aguirre's pigsticker cut these things, but my sword and Phil's sword might as well be made of plywood. Our rifle bullets work, but we're running out. You," and here he looked at Vulcanos, Torrin and even Oki, "are the closest thing we've got to experts, so if you can make these swords work, that's one *big* point in our favour. There's that, and there's that weird thing that big dog-faced bastard did to my head, and Nantle's. We were out of the fight, and that's not good. Is there some way we can... I don't know, make that not happen?"

"A fine idea, Lieutenant. I'm afraid I have not been gathering up much, but will be happy to show you what I have."

Vulcanos grinned broadly. "I do have one spell I recently learned that may be helpful. In examining the auras around the portal stones, I noticed a particular combination of arcane force that seems to strongly reinforce the natural traits of an object. With some modification of what I learned, I believe I can now cast a spell that will make your weapons materially stronger against potential foes. This is only a temporary effect, but when we know we are about to enter combat, it should allow you to hit with much greater accuracy, especially against well-armored opponents."

Oki started to lay out her items one by one: some were junk; some were things that were supposed to have been left behind; some were interesting.

OOC: I can't remember all of them off the top of my head, as I'm sick as a dog: a Fel parchment, a Legion shortbow (good pull, but non-magic), lesser dispel scroll (i think), cure serious stone (a few charges left) ambrosia, ... brain is fussy will have to think further.... worn: ring of minor cold resistance, boots of stealth, ring of fortitude, amulet of protection, rebel hiding cloak...

She laid out things like: a Fel parchment; a Legion shortbow; a Lesser Dispel scroll; a stone of Cure Serious spell with a few charges still on it; she showed them her ambrosia; her healing kits; various other items on her; she even showed them the ring of minor cold resistance and ring of fortitude on her fingers and amulet of protection around her nect; she also pointed out the boots of stealtiness and the rebel hiding cloak that she wore.

ooc: next session, I'll reveal everything if necessary, Oki is not hiding any items at this point.

Torrin

Torrin looked at Vulcanos. "Then what do you suggest, Vulcanos? I know we can't very well trust this Velessa, but what other options do we have? As for my equipment, Joe, I'm afraid you'll be dissapointed." He took off his pack and upended it, spilling the contents to the ground. Healing kits, ambrosia, a potion of Endurance and his healing wands landed in a small jumble. "You may, of course, use the wands if you wish. That would free me to attend to other maters during battle. As for combat, I am only able to damage our foes through the gifts the Shinning Lord has granted me. I believe I can ask for assistance for one other person, but that would be my limit. I will have to pray before I would be able to do so, though, and I used the only supply kit I carried."

"Sir I don't know what the hell that demon hit us with to make us act that crazy. Probably some sort of mind hallucinating um... magic. And since I don't know crap about magic, I don't know how to to stop it. Best to ask those with the spells," said Nantle as he nodded to Torrin and Vul.
"Sir I was thinking about these two demon lords. The simplest way to get this 'essence' is to go charging into both territories to take them out. But... with our supplies running low, I'm not sure if we could pull that off," said Nantle as he crouched down.
"What if instead we offer this demon our services as mercenaries? Agree to join him in his next battle with the other demon lord? Then in all the chaos of fighting between the two, we take them both out and make a run for it," said Nantle as he scratched his neck. It sounded like LT was getting more and more ready to take over which was fine with Nantle. He just hoped they could get a good plan going when it came to those demon lords.

Adrian Aguirre

Adrian empties his pockets mostly with US military gear, few souvenirs with not much use, his fire guns and two knife, one the USA official and the other one the flaming one was given to him by the Lieutenant. Adrian was doing this when he heard the Sergeant speak, even though the idea of being a mercenary had never being appealing for Adrian, this time doesn’t sound so crazy, hire their services in order to find a way out, but will those creatures take them, that’s the question. In any case, Adrian was ready to follow orders from his superiors, no matter if they became mercenaries or not, his loyalty was and will ever be with his squad, superiors and USA Army.

Phils head spun, the smell of this plane made him nauseous. All these demons and devils and Manes...thats what he thought he heard Torrin call those white horrors.

This was not what he thought hell would be like. This was worse and for some reason he had that song stuck in his head. He could not get it out no matter how he tried.

THE DEVIL WENT DOWN TO GEORGIA...LOOKIN' FOR A SOUL TO STEAL

It was certainly driving him crazy. He tried to focus on orders but Lt was not given those anymore and..

THE DEVIL WENT DOWN TO GEORGIA...LOOKIN' FOR A SOUL TO STEAL

Dont sing it out loud the others will think you lost it, he worried. It was almost all his small mind could handle.

And he played fire on the mount, run boys, run.
The devil's in the house of the risin' sun.
Chicken in the bread pin pickin' out dough.
"Granny, does your dog bite?"
"No, child, no."

"Talking to them..." Joe sighed. "I'm... I'm all for any plans that make our lives easier, so sure. These big monster bastards are old, though. Old, and slick. For all we know, they can smell lies. But if they're willing to talk, then we'll talk."

"Someone else should do the talking, though. Not me. And not Torrin, either." Joe gave the cleric a rueful shrug. "Just chatting to these things is... unpleasant. I know what hate was made for, now - it was made so we could hate these things," the LT adds, cryptically.

After the discussion on equipment concluded, Vulcanos responded to Torrin.

"I wish I knew, Torrin, I wish I knew. None of our options look that good. I think we just need to remember that these demons are likely to lie whenever it suits their interests, and sometimes even when it does not, out of pure malice."

As always, Oki's loyalties were with the squad. If she were asked she would tell them that; but, she's told them that on many occassions.

Torring looked around, frowning. "I don't like our options, Joe. If we try to decieve either of the Balrogs, they're likely to pursue us until we're dead. Unfortunantly, we have no guarantees that either wouldn't turn on us after we've dealt with the other. We could, however, try to trick the other Balrog into giving us a part of his flesh and take our chances with the portal, but even that has little guarantee of working."

flesh

Nantle shook his head.
"Already asked Vul here if the 'essence' could be just a piece of flesh like what we got from that ice balor. According to him you can only get this 'essence' stuff with a balor's death," said Nantle. But he could understand the trouble that could come with trying to trick the balors. He was just glad they didn't try attack the last demon lord they ran into. Surrounded by all those guards, they didn't have a chance of taking him out. Question was... how were they supposed to take him out even if they succeeded at getting this amulet?

Vulcanos folded his hands as if praying as he listened, and while he did small tips of flame seemed to dance on his knuckles.

"I don't think we will survive long in this place. We need to take some chances to get out. Is there any way you can think of to trick either demon into coming with us alone? Or perhaps incite one demon to have their minions attack the others, and allow us to sneak in to attack the demon lord unhindered?"

Torrin looked between Nantle and Joe. "It would be risky, but Oki might stand a chance to pull it off if nobody interrupted her." At this, he stared hard at Nantle before continuing, "and I mean absolutly nobody interrupting her."

Torrin released his gaze and sat back on his heels, rubbing his face with a weathered hand. "Vulcanos is right, unfortunantly, we won't last long here. The dezinins of this place are legion and our supplies are running short. While I would dearly love to cleans this place of all of its taint, I know that is not possible. The best I can hope for is to get us out and keep them in. Whatever we decide, we had best do it quick."

"Okay." Sitting down with his back against the warm rock, Joe ran his fingers through his hair and sighed. "Let's start by being clear about one thing. We're in the worst place there is. There's no easy answers here, no 'right' way to go, no way to get out of this without much trouble. Whatever we do, it's going to be trouble."

"Because from what I can tell, these two demon bastards've been sitting in their bunkers for... who knows how long? Sending their shit at each other from time to time - and every now and again, some poor guys and gals like us get pulled into it. I don't think we can realistically trick either of them into doing something stupid, or talk them out of their shells. Sure, we can try - but if we fail we shouldn't be surprised, and if we succeed we should be very, very wary. No sweet-talker alive or dead could have convinced Saddam to walk out of Baghdad and face down the US army by himself."

"So expect that we are going to have to fight one of those bastards. In their throne room. And yes, it's gonna be hard, but at least the Ice Guy was willing to arm us against the Fire Guy. That's something. And we may be low on supplies, but we've still got some juice in these magic wand sticks, and if we ration your hocus pocus, guys, and try to have some left for when the fight goes down... well. Be prepared. And have a little faith."

At this, he leans forward, and adds in a hushed tone, "But I want our options open. If we can talk to this Fire guy - vain and stupid, he was called - if we can get him to give us stuff to kill Ice Guy too... well. I want that stuff. Ok?"
