Oki thought about it a bit and then spoke up, "There are some stories from our modern science-fiction culture as well as theories of military warfare that speak of situations like we are currently in: a smaller power facing two major enemies. The trick to their survival was basically getting the two enemies to nearly or toally wiping each other out by any means necessary, even if it meant siding with one or both or pretending to do so, or hiding, or provoking them into attacking each other."

"You all bring up valid points: they've been at this for eons; they've been sending countless mercenaries to do their biding; they've been sweet-talked by the best. Think of this like one of the history-making rugby matches that turned violent: red vs blue, the teams are playing in the field back and forth with the fans from both sides are watching from the sidelines... suddenly a figurative spark errupts and next thing you know the entire stadium of fans are fighting each other and there are record number of deaths and injuries at what was at an otherwise friendly game of rugby."

Adrian

Adrian listens to what the others have to say, full of doubts, but for once one thing was clear for him now.

I think the lady is right, you are all. They had being fighting for long time, even is possible that they had made use of mercenaries like us, therefore our intervention will not make any difference, it is still part of the game, which at the end is not about who wins, instead is about who last longer.

Adrian stops for a moment to think about his next words.

If we side with one of the Balors we will be no more than pawns like the ones they had used for decades and at the end we will die. If we try to trick them then I doubt this is also a new option, most probably someone has tried the same before, and for what I can see with no success, so at the end we will do the same game they are use and end up death. I believe that the lady is right; we must do something that unbalance the eternal struggle, something to break the fragile equilibrium. I think that if we manage to make them believe that we are more than mercenaries, and perhaps convince one to follow us to battle because with us they stand a chance to win once and for all, we might have a chance that they killed each other, or at least one of them prevail, with whom we can make a deal.

The specialist looks at each one of them, and then continues.

Though, I’m just a scout, not a politician or strategist.

The Lieutenant sighs. "None of us are, Aguirre. We're soldiers. Ok, well... what do you have in mind, exactly? Anyone?"

Phil Heard Clearly the Missing Words

Phil mind couldn't follow most of what the group plotted. In fact, he was just hoping someone would explain why they had agreed to help a big horned fiend. It could have been Phil's simple misunderstanding, or the lack of complexity in the way Phil thought that he was not deceived. As he heard the fiends agreement with them, things went like this: They killed the fiends enemy and he would be able, without his mortal protagonist, to make a portal out of this realm for himself. Phil had heard the deal end clearly; "...and I will make a portal out of this world to yours."

Everyone else seemed to assume the deal ended with the words, "for you." Maybe it was that Phil's mind was to simple to make that leap. It certainly was not sharp enough to catch the omission.

Quietly he muttered with a worried sound in his voice to Double A, "I hope when we do help that icey devil that he lets us use that portal after he goes through."

//and no Phil would not know the word "protagonist" but the omission in the deal is quite interesting and I think he is dumb enough not to be fooled in this case

Oki heard what Phil said and stopped in her tracks so to speak, then spoke, "Phil has a VERY valid point." She smiled at Phil. "In fact, all three of these demons are promising us portals to 'our plane or our world'. What if they simply go through it themselves to do as they please, whether or not they let us go through... admittedly, not letting us go through is by far the worse of the two options. Frankly, how do we know they won't go through or send minions through to cause havoc or worse... besides which, the pronoun 'our' seems to be awfully vague sometimes... which universe?"

The extended squad... somehow the seven of them from different worlds and different walks of life (some civilian, some military, some religious) seemed to form a new collective squad... came out of the mushroom valley and into the more open valley with the near-frozen walking mushroom as their clue they were on the right trail.

They were about to encounter Lord Zurgon's most trusted emissary to the merelith with plenty of back-up. By himself, he would be formidable... with his soldiers he would be even more formidable. They were in for one helluva fight.

About all that Oki could do was to play a rousing tune when the time came and be ready with the healing and keep herself safe so that the others did not have to be distracted by her safety. The shadows protected her as well as her magics and cautiousness. She did not take unnecessary risks.

Torrin

Torrin wiped the sweat off of his brow and stared out over the mushroom field. This was the third? fourth? time the group had been over this land and everytime it appealed to him less. Now they were tasked with finding and defeating Lord Zurgon's emissary. Torrin knew if this beast was anything like the overgrown Gnoll they fought earlier, their chances for survival were slim indeed.

May the Father watch over us all...

Turning on the Emissary of Zurkon with Zurkon watching their every move was no longer just words spoken that could theoretically be undone by true acts of loyalty to Zurkon or even neutrality... what they were about to would be open betrayal to Zurkon and he would be watching. No more whispers, no more guile.

Vulcanos saw the worry in the faces of the others. Truth be told, I may be a bit worried myself. The cold creatures are susceptible to my spellcraft, but the fiery ones don't seem much bothered by a few fireballs or flame arrows. Ah well, I'll just do what I can...

ooc: game?

Hmm...don't see a game posting for tonight, nor do I have an old invitation in my inbox. Did one go out and I just missed it through some glitch?

I will miss the game on February 18th (assuming there is one) - family ski vacation out west that week.

ooc: re: (above)
even if you lost the mailing for the invitation, you still retain the links to the invites, etc. It's worth the time to tinker with it a few times to see how it works.

Basically, it lists by rows & columns, in logical order, including a place to indicate your acceptance, and the game page to enroll your characters.

Adrian sits for a moment, thankfully of the brief resting time they got, at least to relax his legs for few minutes. This march was turning harder and harder every step mushrooms again, one thing for sure, he will never eat mushrooms with garlic anymore, no matter if it was something he used to like in the past, not anymore. In that brief moment he took to rest thought about the forthcoming events, a possible battle with such a creature that might destroy them all, especially when they are this tired. No matter if they were destined to succeed or fail, Adrian knew his duty and was ready to fulfill it again, as always, with his body a bit rested now he took a deep breath and prepares again to take the point.

Phil was not all that smart. He had always known others had an easier way of thinking things through. As they traveled in this fiendish place twisting back and forth across the horrifying landscape he could see the toll it was taking on his companions. He did not think they could take much more of this hell.

He was not so sure that he could take much more himself. The mushroom powder had been a blessing he thought. Until it had twisted his mind in confusion and he had attacked his friends. His shoulders slumped in guilt as he recalled his uncontrolled behavior. How much more could they take? Stranded from home, banished into this hell it all started to seem so hopeless.

Maybe another battle would clear his heart, clear his head, wake him from this nightmare.

He'd been happy to let go of the reins while he acclimatised to this horrible place. And once he'd found his balance again, he was happy to let things move along at their own pace. But now - looking into that smirking demon lord's face, it had been all he could do not to rip his sword out of the scabbard and just take the vile thing down or die in the attempt.

But that would have meant the deaths of everyone in the squad, too. Unacceptible. So, they were going to have to play the game the demons' way.

The harder route. The more painful and desperate route. But it would be worth it just to leave those two giant bastards dead. And for that to have any chance to work... he had to take the reins again.

The orders came in a clipped voice, holding onto the wrath he wanted to save for the fight itself. "Vulcanos, give us an opening bombardment followed by covering fire. Nantle, Torrin, take the giant. Go for the knees! Phil, keep the smaller crap busy - Aguirre, watch his back! Oki, keep them on their feet, but for the love of all, don't get caught in the barrage."

"Are we clear?"

Oki kept her emotions in check when she saw the Lieutenant take charge once again; but, she was proud of him, "Aye, Sir. I promise to keep safe while keeping everyone healthy as best as possible."
