Ok... here we go. The Lieutenant.

***

2nd. Lieutenant Joseph 'Sunny' Abnett
24 years of age

Portrait: m_soldier_17

Very much the all-american kid, at least on the surface. Went to a good school, got good grades, a respected football player. Blonde and blue-eyed, but with a certain ruthless streak - he notably informed on another student while in 12th grade who he knew was smoking, possibly dealing weed. It damaged his reputation with his fellow students, but near the end of the year that didn't matter much. What did matter was currying favour and being memorable in the minds of his tutors, the men who could help him get where he wanted to be - and he'd never liked the guy anyway.

He probably couldn't tell you why he decided to want to become an officer in the US Army. He sold himself as wanting to serve his country, but deep down it was an act of rebellion against the fait accompli his parents were setting him - neither Doctor or Lawyer appealed to him, and the Army was an excellent way to claim the moral high ground while declaring independence. Even so, once he'd decided on it, he went for it with everything he had, writing letters to his Congressman, his tutors and any of his father's friends who he knew might be sympathetic to the idea of joining the US Army. It took a whole year, but he got what he wanted.

After four years of cadetship, a year playing linebacker for the Black Knights USMA football team, and an eventual graduation, Joe's aggressively ambitious edge has been blunted, but not removed - as far as he can see it, he's working to be 'the best he can be', and that doesn't involve hanging around in the rear echelons waiting to be noticed. Originally posted to Fort Stewart with the rank of 2nd. Lieutenant, he's been seeking the fast track to promotion, requesting and getting a transfer to the 3rd Army's theatre of operations in Iraq, and applying for opportunities to earn the main thing he knows he lacks - experience. After three months serving as a runner and clerk under Captain Markham, Joe's pulled as many strings as he can to be considered for a combat assignment. Now that chance has come, he's prepared to grab it with both hands. The men they're sending him with have plenty of experience, after all - and capturing a terrorist leader is exactly the kind of thing that looks good on a resume.

Somewhere along the line, Joe's picked up the nickname 'Sunny'. Taken at face value, this could be a reference to a particular choice of reading material, Sun Tzu's Art of War - Joe picked the military classic to read whilst a freshman at USMA, and made everyone know he was reading it too, because it sounded impressive. However, he's begun to get the nagging feeling that his nickname endures because people - most gallingly his superiors, the people who matter - see him as just a kid.

The Eleventh Commandment

His heart had been pounding ever since they'd gone inside the safehouse, but the sudden stop in the street gave him time to think. He wanted to give chase. That was what they'd do in the movies. But there were only four of them. Two were badly singed from incendiaries, one of them him, the other his groggy point-man - and one, his sergeant, seemed to be doing his best to ignore a bullet wound. And they'd picked up a civilian. THE civilian, in fact. By any standards, this was already a win; several insurgents dead, one high-profile hostage liberated, no casualties.

Al-Zaidi was the primary target, but the golden rule, the eleventh commandment came into play: Cover Thine Own Ass. If this went south, it would not be his fault, not if he had anything to say about it.

He gulped for breath, and gave out orders. "Fila...m... Phil, watch the corners. Point fire." He hoped the big man was smart enough to be able to watch two alleyways at once. "Nantle, take Aguerre and sweep the upstairs of the building. We'll hold here in case any more try to escape this way. You find more hostages or anything that looks like intel, you bring them here."

That got the sergeant from breathing down his neck while he did what he was about to do; as well as getting the woozy scout out of his hair. Maybe the man was disoriented by the explosion, but... 'Sir, it's a Jap'? Where did he think they were, the Pacific theater? Korea? Was he afraid they were going to get jumped by the Viet Cong? He hoped he was wrong, but Aguerre had the unsettling stare of someone who'd been refighting the Vietnam war in his head for the last thirty years.

One more little thing, before all was ready. "Miss Takanawa, please take - right." She'd already taken cover. And had gone from being a scared, traumatised hostage to looking like she was trying to memorise every detail of what was going on. Shit, maybe we're gonna be in the news.

And lastly, he pulled out the SINGCARS radio and -

Oki waited 'til she had the lieutenant's attention, "I don't know if this is of use; but, about 10 minutes before you arrived Karim  Ali al Zaidi came into my room and then as he left, he shouted up to his men before locking the door on me, 'Sallah! Ad aqin.'

Also, they killed Tom... Tom Krinsky. He was ... more than just my cameraman. He saved my life, protecting my secret: ... my mother is Jewish. If the insurgents discovered that, they'd have executed me for sure.

They separated us from the other two hostages: two American men they said, I saw them for a short while - both causian, about thirty years old each, in plain clothes, one blonde hair, sideburns midway, hair parted to the side, tattoo on his left wrist of a snake in a triangle; the other had dark brown hair, trimmed mustache, hair parted in the middle, I couldn't tell if he had a tattoo or not, his arms were covered. They were questioned about being spies, as were Tom and I, before they were taken away. They may be dead too."

Yes Sir!

"Yes sir," said Nantle as he saluted. He nodded to Adrian as he turned to enter the building. He had to admit he would rather have had Phil cover his back for the fight that was probably going to happen upstairs. The guy was dumb as a sack of bricks, but he wasn't wounded like himself and Adrian.
It was just a flesh wound really, but even something like that could slow him down.
He suppose it could be worst though. Sunny could have ordered them into a full job to give chase. Glory seeking like that would always get you killed.

Huh?

The lieutenant paused in the act of calling Command, frowning at what the journalist had to say. He shook his head, blankly.

"Sallah... wha? I don't... I don't speak..." Joe took a guess - "Iraqi. S - Sergeant! Sergeant! You know what any of that means?"

Oki thought back over her movie lore a bit, "Sallah is a common Arabic name, you might recall the name from a bunch of Indiana Jones movies, he was a friend and ally of Indiana Jones... Al-Zaidi might have been shouting orders to his subordinate."

"Aqin, might mean 'able' or 'disable', I'm not entirely sure to be honest. My Arabic is very rusty."

The lieutenant presses buttons on the radio, but gets only static.

The sergeant sees it first, and reaching over the lieutenant's arm, turns the device over. The bullet is still visible in the entry hole, flattened, probably a ricochet. Looks bigger than your 5.56mm NATO rounds; probably a shot from an AK.

I have invited Gulfwulf to join us on Monday nights as a new player. He is one of the leading DMs on NWC and has some familiarity with GGS; he helped me run some early sessions of the Sunday beta.

He'll be playing a character that is a bit... different than yours. You'll encounter him sometime in the next session.

Welcome aboard, GW!

Phil glanced at the radio and frowned keeping his attention back to the watch. "Sir, Don't think that radio is gonna work..." He said, stating the obvious. "Don't think no one gone up those stairs either...had those secured right tight just like ya told me, Sir." His eyes scanned the area in single minded focus: look mean and get off the first shot. Also, keep your mind off the woman. Pappy always said, "Women be evil, they latch on an yous lost yer freedom. Good bye life!" Phil shuddered.

OCC Edit//Welcome GW glad to get a chance to play with ya!

Oki didn't think that she'd ever get a chance to give Tom a decent burial, if even his body was still in the building or if she'd be allowed back in there to look. So, she took a minute to mourn his loss for the first time that she'd really let herself to, since this ordeal began and he'd been murdered by the insurgents. Tom and Oki knew that they loved each other for the last few months since they'd been assigned together in Iraq. They'd often spoken about starting a life together one day when they finished their assignment here.

Oki went off into a corner and started uttering the Mourners Kaddish in Hebrew quietly so as to not attract too much attention. She was done fairly quickly so as to not interfere with the soldiers' operations.

Wiping a tear from her cheek, she was ready to move on, for Tom's sake. She wanted to make it out alive and she her parents and grandparents again. She wanted to visit Tom's family and tell them what a hero he was for saving his life. Heck, if she was able to, she'd love to record her rescue for posterity sake let alone a possible story of the year. If only she could convince them to let her get her equipment.

Oki spoke up, "If it's safe in the house, and we have a moment, could I got look for my equipment and things, please?" She tried to sound as convincing and reassuring of the safety of the house as possible. "I promise to let them check every place and nook and crany and chest and box for IED's and hidden insurgents, first."

What it means

"Well Sallah is pretty much just a name. As for 'Ad aqin'... that means along the lines of get ready to kill something," said Nantle. Of course he wasn't a translator. He was just basing his assumption on what his heard around the place.
"Let us secure the upstairs first lady before you decide nosing around. Could be one or two hiding up there," said Nantle as he cocked his weapon.

Oki knew to respect the authority of the unit she was travelling with, especially the Sergeant, "Yes, Sergeant," she knew not to disrespect him by calling him sir like an officer, "I'll wait behind until you give the all-clear signal."

*pokes snout in* Thanks, LB, it's great to play under you again. BTW, don't go spreading rumors about me, I have a reputation to tarnish.

I'll be posting IC here soon after I discuss a few aspects of my character with LB. Until then, here's a link to the portrait I'll be using: http://home.earthlink.net/~torgefin/portraits.zip

The light from the rising sun filtered into the small room through the narrow window slit, resting on closed eyes. A large nose twitched over a thick beard before heavy eyelids ponderously opened, blinking away sleep. A heavily caloused hand whiped the eyes before the man slowly rose to a sitting position. He swung his feet over the side and stretched, breathing deeply and smiling at the sun. He rose and dressed quickly and efficiently, donning the white robes of his order before straightening his bedding and opening the heavy door to his quarters. He nodded to the acolyte standing outside his door and accepted the long scarf of office. "Today is a good day, brother. Let us commence the ritual of the sun." The other man bobbed his shaved head and they proceeded down the brightly lit corridor.

"Today is a good day, indeed."

Adrian rags some curtain he found, to clean his wounds. He frees his arm, where most of the burn was done, and after cleaning a bit he covers it again, with some pain. Then he turns to see Nantle, a tough guy for what it seems at first sight. Well, for now Adrian just wants to let him know that he is alright, a bit bitten and with some pain, but ready for action and they can trust him. That buzzing is no longer with him now; perhaps it was the grenade noise, being to close to the explosion. He should be careful in the future. Adrian approaches to the Sergeant and stands still to his side, ready to move on orders from any of his superiors.

Of course, he gives a glance to the woman they have there, no good news. It is hard to travel with a civilian, especially one whom is not trained or at least has the minimum idea on how to survive in enemy field. But they said it was part of the mission, so looks like things are changing a bit, it is more than just finding some crazy terrorist; they also need to take out that woman.

Oki stays concealed and hidden and ready to move in to retrieve her equipment; but, only when it is safe and only when given the signal. She's travelled with U.S. troops before and she knew the drill. They were in charge of the mission. She could make requests; but, she had to follow orders if she wanted to stay alive and if she wanted to remain welcome. Perhaps as a rescuee she might be a valued asset to them; but, she intended to get a story out of this, and to do that, meant not burning her credibility or her welcome with them. As long as she was not a hinderance to them, she might get a story out of this.

Concentrate, keep a lookout, be a help to them; but, keep low. Keep out of the way. The one soldier looked wounded, if she had the opportunity, maybe she could dress his wound if they had bandages. She took a First-Aid course back home and a refresher here when she was first assigned as a war correspondent.

Quietly she offered, "Lieutenant, one of your men looked injured. I have some Basic First-Aid training if someone has some bandages and there is time."

The Lieutenant stands there, mouth open in... horror? Staring at the broken radio. He thumbs the channel key, praying for a voice, any voice. Oh god. Oh god. Oh god... we're on our own. I'm on my own. What do we do? What do we... wait, what?

"Wh... what? Of course... injuries, very... very bad..."

He blinks at Miss. Takanawa, once or twice, as if waking up - and his eyes harden as he does so, a new thought ousting out the doubt.

"If a general is not courageous he will be unable to conquer the unknown or create great plans." I'm NOT afraid.

"... and hurry up about it! SERGEANT! The building! Double-time! No time to lose any more!"

Joe rams the SINGCARS handset back over his shoulder with determined, angry force. "As soon as you're done, we're going after him."
