Just a couple of newcomer questions

Greetings everyone,

I can't believe I waited this long to pick up NWN, but better late than never, eh? At any rate, I was wondering a couple of things.

First, is there a general version of the game that most people prefer to use? I just updated my game today and I'm wondering if people prefer using an older version or the newer version?

And secondly, what's a good way for a newcomer to get some experience? I know a lot of games probably have high-level players and quests, which is why I want to know if there's a specific way of finding games geared toward lower-level players?

Most use both expansions: Shadows of Undrentide (SoU) and Hordes of the Underdark (HoTU), both patched to 1.68. As for gaining experience, just keep an eye on the Player Connection forum for hosts posting for new players. Let the host know you're new and they will help you get setup.

Thanks. One last thing, where can I find the player pictures that everyone else seems to have listed for their profiles?

You can make a profile picture by taking any picture that grabs your fancy and resizing it to 64x128 with any handy image editor. Then you can upload your portrait to NWC from the profile menu.

Or you can go to nwvault.ign.com and look for the section called portraits. Many of them are already sized correctly and you just need to download them to your computer and then upload them here. I tried the re-sizing thing and I could never get it right. I am sad to say I am only 50% geek. :

Welcome, Firion, to Neverwinterconnections.

Basically to find a game, it takes patience, and trying out a bunch of servers to see if you find any that fit your taste.

There are many that are heavy combat, high level, lots of gold, players with levels in the 20's.

Just as many are hard core HCR (Hard Core Rules, like 3rd edition tabletop), that are challenging and difficult to gain even a few levels fast, and a mix of varying styles between those extremes.

There are campaign servers, and there are Persistent World (PW) servers like any MMORPG, except on a smaller scale... though that isn't really the focus of NWC.

I'd suggest browsing the games listed on the schedule for a few weeks, and applying to games that are open. If you find a game that is closed, you still might send a polite message to the DM running it, as your name can be put on a standby list, should there be an opening.

Once you sign up for a game, make sure you attend, or give advance notice when you can't.

Enjoy and have fun.

Also, I think there is a forum, for players seeking games, perhaps expound a bit about your style, and the type of campaign you are looking for... an appropriate DM might see it and invite you. I know that GM_ODA is seeking more players to expand his game.

Best of luck, and again, welcome to NWC.

Yes, by all means, please do stop by my server. We have half-a-dozen DMs and adding more, with games scheduled several times a week. The server is open 24x7 so you can explore on your own a bit if you like (it is as much Perpetual World as it is Sound Stage for DMs).

Hope to see you online!
Be well. Game on.

Welcome. I'm pretty new here too and I can honestly say I've been stunned by the amount of support I've received from this community. You could not have picked a better place to get started in NWN multi-player.

Consider installing the CEP version 2 in your NWN install as well. A LOT of local "realms" use it. The CEP or "Community Expansion Project" is completely free and I have detailed step by step installation instructions posted in my campaign forums...

Go here:
http://www.neverwinterconnections.com/forums/index.cfm/fuseaction/viewthreads/id/16786.htm

Go to the thread called "Game Info and Requirements".

Ignore the first two posts... those posts are meant for my players. You don't need any of that stuff (unless you have 3 hours open on Thursday nights). Skip down to the third post and read everything after "Installation of CEP to NWN". Don't bother reading the 4th post called "custom rules". Again, that's all specific to my campaign.

If you are a member of the NeverwinterNightsCrazy yahoo group I have the same article posted in the files section.

As for getting experience...

Play play play play play. There's a lot of DMs here and any of us would love to have you. Personally I run a bi-monthly virtual PnP campaign on Thursday nights (8:30PM to 11:30PM eastern standard time [GM+5]). Consider yourself invited.
