Urk, et all, First, I’d like to thank you all for the wonderful game the other day. I’m sorry that I was late, however, I completely “spaced” what day it was (thinking Thursday, calendar was still on October, …). Thanks for the Email, which greeted me that morning so I didn’t completely miss out – would have ruined my weekend for sure! I’ve been pondering Axil for a while now, thinking that he is really more of a liability than an asset. I chose a monk as this was my very first “on-line” experience and monks are fairly easy to operate – don’t require a lot of equipment and are easier to “control” due to their simplicity. I normally build DEX based monks; however, for a change I wanted to try a STR based monk with a bit of fighter. Problem is I took the first level of fighter too early (delaying some monk feats) and although he packs a bit of a “punch” his AC is too low to be of any real use. During the game – I knew that Axil was taking a risk in his last engagement – he had suffered some damage earlier and really had no way of healing himself; however, he took the chance and the fates delivered their verdict. I’m not certain that resurrecting Axil is in the best interest of the group – he’ll either have to hang back in the fights (not much fun) or he will get killed again, and again, and again …. Furthermore, Axil has served his main purpose, which was to introduce me into the world of on-line NWN; and while I still have a lot to learn, I have overcome my initial inhibitions to on-line RPGs – thanks to this wonderful group. I am prepared to generate another character to continue in this campaign. I like to fight, so an armed (and armored) warrior would be my next choice and I think that Cormac could use some help up front. I have three types of characters in mind: a Divine Warrior (Fighter/Paly/CoT); a Melee Machine (Fighter/Bard/RDD); or a Combat Cleric built for melee – assuming the CoT and RDD are even allowed. I defer to the DM and group for the final analysis, just don’t want anyone thinking that I’ll feel bad not playing Axil – I just think that he is a faulted character and will continue to be a liability as the game progresses; and I see this as an opportunity for change. Dave O.

Axil! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Now that I've gotten that bit of drama out of my system I have to say that this is ENTIRELY your choice. I like Axil because he's been around so long. He provides a continuity to the campaign, so I shall miss him. I do see your point about his AC being too low to stay on the front line. One word of warning... We are doing a first edition style Greyhawk campaign. That means no sorcerers and no prestige classes. While newer versions of Greyhawk allow for prestige classes the origional D&D didn't have them (with the odd exception of bards and assassins). Also... Too many of NWN's prestige classes are specific to Forgotten Realms (Purple Dragon Disciples, Harpers, Champions of Torm etc). To only disallow those would severely unbalance the character classes, so the only fair solution I can think of is to disallow them all.

Urk, Yeah, he is a bit of an icon; however, he has served his purpose. I think a suitable ending for Axil is that "in the end, he found true companionship and and a sense of belonging -- the two things that had been missing in his life." Gotcha on the Prestige classes -- no problem. I've got an idea for a Dwarven melee cleric (could also be human but in the "old days" I tended to play dwarves). Not the most powerful spell caster, but with some heavy armor, he is a very suitable tank -- brings some healing in the mix as well. Thoughts? Dave O.

| Urk, I had been kind of curious about this point in the campaign...no prestige classes. While I grant 1st Ed did not have prestige classes, the whole prestige class system was built in 3rd Ed (and preceeded by the 'kit' system in 2nd Ed) was to get rid of the multitudes of classes from 1st Ed. As I recall there were in excess of 200 'official' classes from 1st Ed AD&D (if you use the classes issued via Dragon magazine as official). Even looking at the official publications (and excluding OA) NWN has no way to emulate some of the basic classes like 1st Ed Druid and the Cavalier (which Paladins were sub-class of). I am not saying that it should be 'required' to play out the prestige classes, but my personal favorite class in 1st Ed AD&D was the Myrrhikam...a NG paladin class (sort of a combination of Ranger and Paladin), but there is nothing really close as an equivalent in 1st Ed. I could come close be building a Ranger/Fighter build, but would have to get some special items from the DM to emulate the powers. That could be an option to explore, is the building of class combinations and then developing 'class' items that help with giving powers based on 1st Ed class write-ups. Some would be impossible to re-create (example would be the revision to the Monk class as presented in BOD (Best of Dragon)), but you might be able to come close on others. In the end though, it is your campaign and you should look at what makes it work. If there are prestige classes that you think would work in the campaign (as far as RDD, there were half-dragons as an official class in 1st Ed) I would say let those in and exclude others. I don't know just because a prestige class would not fit in with the campaign you should exclude all prestige classes is the right answer. Spoken as one who is not anticipating using any prestige classes (well, unless you adopted PRC into the game...which I am not sure you would want to do).
