The OFFICIAL DM 101 Certification Thread

What is all this about DM101 Certification?
*More later*

How do I get Certified?
  • Sign up and attend a DM 101 session
  • Schedule an Open or Application game on NWC
  • Post a link to the game in this thread
  • After the game post some comments from your reviews
  • Wait patiently for your Certificate to arrive

Certificates are sent in May, August and December

Example
Hello, OldScratch here. Here is a link to my game: http://www3.rpgwarehouse.com/games/index.cfm/fuseaction/displaygame/id/10413.htm
(Note the game links are only active from the time you schedule until a few days after the game is over)

Here are some comments from the session:

"I'm thoroughly impressed with the group of DM's at Fleetstreet gaming, You all did a fantastic job with this game. One of the things that really impresses me is the amount of life you bring to the NPC's in the Game, from the main characters all the way down the the extras. All the conversations in the background are great, and it really fleshes out the reality of the world when your sitting in the common room of the Inn, and the conversation at the PC's table is not the only conversation going on.
The challenge of this module was fantastic, we were constantly walking a fine line between defeat and victory. It makes the game a little more exciting when we are brought right to the edge of disaster, yet manage to pull through anyway.

Great job on the module all around, I hope to get a chance to continue with this campaign, the plot line was excellent, and I would like to find out more about what's going on."

"*BRAVO* This was the closest experience to a PnP adventure I have ever had. Multiple DM's working together is just so amazing you have to experience it! The module is very complex and they really kept you involved in the story. I can't wait to play with these guys again!"

"Well, I feel I really got the short end of the stick, because Duncan was the only DM in the game. He did such a great job I can only imagine what three would have been like, lol. With the group we had, I KNOW it was hard to keep ahead of us, and get into character for the different conversations. We had a good dynamic, and the plot kept us debating with ourselves on what to do next, and whether or not we had doomed ourselves with the first encounter. I won't give spoilers, but the atmosphere was very well done. I had to play my normally calm and professional rogue as if he had the willies, because even I was a little creeped out, lol. Duncan provided all the right conversations, and Fleet Street provided just the right atmosphere, for a great RPing night of gaming. Combat was not particularly tough, but made tense by our knowledge that there was no respawn. It really brought our tactics together."

"You all did an absolutely amazing job. You are all top notch role-players. The only way I might improve the game is to have more role-playing with NPCs after the initial area. However, that may have been more our fault than yours. I was overall very impressed and would recommend these DMs to any and all. Keep up the great work! ~ Rizzen, Owner of NeverwinterConnections"

While we are at it... how about some past reviews of the whole NWU process...

"This was a well organized and well conducted class. When we students got carried away the teachers quickly got us back in line. We covered a lot more than I would have expected in such a short time. Teachers were quick to help and showed a lot of patience when anyone had trouble grasping a step. A lot of thought and preparation went into this class and it showed in the flawless execution. I never have expected anything so professional and I was truly delighted.

THANKS TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED. I am looking forward to DM102."

"Excellent class and I will take 102 when it comes up. I had no idea that the DM client was so... fun."

"DM 101 is a FANTASTIC course, even if you do not plan to DM (like me) it definitely gives you an appriciation of what the DMs have to do to make a game run smoothly."

(I did the DM class some months ago, since then I built a small module and ran this open one-shot with Reisiger as co-DM)

http://www.neverwinterconnections.com/games/index.cfm/fuseaction/displaygame/id/10718.htm

Comments from Players

Excellent module with lots of detail, and fantastic DM'ing with good organization. You guys were great.

Good job, excellent work. Thanks again.

Great DMing, ive never experienced anything like this before. Great entrances and exits :-D.

Well it was my first NWC game and yes I have enjoyed it. There was a disruptive player however who refused to stay in the group or let the story unfold in its own time, at first i thought the DM was lax in not removing the player but after great patience on the part of the DM, the final change in the players attitude was astounding. I think the DM should be comended for the way he handled the situation and all players. To be able to turn around a party on the brink of colapse and restore the atmosphere of the modual I think shows a great deal abitity.

DM101 Comment from Smithy
The DM Class from the NWUniversity was a great inspiration for me!
Also the DM-style thread in the NWU forum is great!

OldScratch Adds: Thanks! And is Reisiger applying for certification as well?

I took the DM101 class quite a while ago (9 April 2003) but never ran a game as I didn't feel ready to DM yet. I am now running my first game as DM and I wanted to know if I need to resit the class or if I can still get qualified?

The game link is here: http://www.neverwinterconnections.com/games/index.cfm/fuseaction/displaygame/id/10301.htm

Thanks.

Greetings OldScratch.

I atended DM101 about a month or so ago but just managed to run my first game, Shrine of the Eth'barat. Here is the link and some comments:

http://www3.rpgwarehouse.com/games/index.cfm/fuseaction/displaygame/id/10843.htm

Comment By: Schatten9
For your first time DMing, this went extremely well! The pacing was balanced, the quest was delivered believably, and the encounters were tough and interesting (especially some of the traps.) Although there were some flaws in the game (regarding difficulty balance, treasure, etc.), these were not the fault of the DM. Gemini_II ran this session like a pro, and was a present but invisible force behind the flow of the game. Great job, and I hope to play with in future sessions!

Comment By: Pharaun Mizzrym
Shrine of Eth'barat, started with good plot, great character interaction between players, points of interest to work on the gates between the bridge were a pain to destroy, and a bit of a longer lag time between respawning, but game play was excellent and would definetly play with this Dm again and again

Thanks for the great lesson. It seems to really have paid off!

Application game completed

As ROOkie mention above, we planned, and by now DM'ed our application game. My mentor recomended I should post here when the game had completed, so here is one of the comments ( ):

I thought that for a first effort they were amazing. Everything seemed organized and smooth. I was pleased with the module. They handled situations fairly and the NPCs were believable. In addition to this the module had a brief hiccup, but it was handled smoothly and without any disruption to the conclusion of the game or the quality. FINE JOB!

DM 101 Certification Game

My Certification Game is located here:
http://www.neverwinterconnections.com/games/index.cfm/fuseaction/displaygame/id/10980.htm

I did a truncated version of Secret of Saltmarsh where the PCs went through the module's first major quest (The haunted house) and reported back to the mayor.

It was a ton of fun to DM it because I never realized how much work and reward DMs get from playing as NPCs. I can also definitely see the value in having a DM team because it was a lot to manage for 6 PCs!

Here are some comments:

"A really fun game, especially notable as this was his first."

"This game was great, I loved the plot and most definatly the mood. The DM made the game feel scary, the feel of the haunted house was great. I like the fact that the upstairs floor was so rotted it could drop you to the bottom floor, nice touch. There was a little bit too much treasure for the effort IMHO, many bodies all over the house and they all had magical goodies (even if it was just potions). The server was a tad laggy at the begining, but it fixed up. Overall it's one of the best games I've had, great players, great adventure, great DM."

"Great game! Moody and scary atmosphere. Loved the sound effects and the doors that opened and closed by themselves. I think the NPCs could do with better, dialogue though. There needs to be more dialogue too I think. (yes, that means a lot of fast typing, I know) ;-) Next time maybe loose the recurring text boxes that informed players of certain sights and sounds. Use the DM channel for such notices. We are all following and reading the dialogue history aswell as the text on screen. If you do feel the need to use the text boxes that pop on the main screen, atleast make sure they happen only once and don't repeat several times, requiring us players to keep clicking on ok to continue playing. Apart from these minor points of critique and the fact you accidently killed our Bard twice (what we're you trying to do anyway??), great game. Great atmosphere. More! more! more!! " (as a side note this player did recommend me as one of his top 5)

"For your Dm101 certification, You really did good, the story was good and you really made the npc act like they were real players... You added to the story by taking control of the Npc's And I loved the Backstabing in play you did in the cellar. In all, Great game! "

Average Review was an 8/10

Things I'd change in the future:

1) I think I'd DM with a partner
2) I think I'd spend more time working with the module triggers and wands in the DM client. Some of them for this module got a bit confusing even with the great documentation.
3) Give players 1 healing kit each if the challenge is high enough. I ended up having to heal one player back to life after a particularly nasty encounter left her dying.

Things I'd do the same in the future:

1) Play NPCs and keep notes on how each one talks (little subtle differences seemed to really be a hit with the players)
2) Let the players determine the story to a large part. I strayed from the SSoSM this time because the players were really interested in the spookyness of the place. So I made it scary and let them explore that throwing in a few more monster encounters with speaking ghosts, etc that creeped them out.
3) Give constant token rewards for good roleplaying. That worked AWESOME and kept the party focused not only on their characters, but also on the tasks at hand. I rewarding puzzle solving and good in-character chatter.

Overall it was a great experience and I look forward to DM'ing again. Please PM me if you have any questions.

Request for certification

Hello,

Recently took the DM 101 course and I ran the Vethboro Dragon which was great fun and very well made. The DM document and the pre-made character were a great help and allowed me to possess NPCs and still keep the journal updated - great fun.

OldScratch Adds: We like to see a link to the game... but this is so far in the past you would be hard pressed to find it. How about you edit in some comments you got from reviews of the game. Since we go on the honor system here at the 'U' I will nevertheless submit your name for certification. Enjoy.

Here are some of the reviews of my game.

I really haved the impression that this town can really exist as all was so well created. This the kind of game who give you the will to play more in it. That was refreashing, smooth and colorful.
I think that I will enjoy this campaign.

really good start, youre a fanatic i'm think, youre mod is really pack with details and you ROCK THE PLACE ;-)
Keep going this great work ...

Great game , dm let the players breath and explore each other and there surroundings without forcing the plot down our throats.
Everything was well under control and the game moved smoothly , cant wait till next session it was a blast.

Hi. I've just run a application called The Coming Darkness Pt 1 as my first game after taking part in the DM 101 course.

here is the link to the page

http://www1.rpgwarehouse.com/games/index.cfm/fuseaction/displaygame/id/10752.htm

I've only had one comment posted and here it is.

"Great tension....good plot device to allow different backgrounds. Good application question as it led straight into plot and reason for adventure"

The worl dis one of my own devising, rather than being based in one of the offical DnD realms. I found it really interesting being the DM and is an area that I think I'm going to come to love the more I do it.

I ran The Vethboro Dragon last night with Vual. I took the DM101 a little more than a month ago and this was my first session. We had a great time and all the players had fun as well. Heres the link:

http://www.neverwinterconnections.com/games/index.cfm/fuseaction/displaygame/id/11213.htm

Here are some comments from the players:

"OUTSTANDING GAME! All NPCs controlled by DMs had personality to them, and really came alive. The adventure itself made helped me get into character easily and really immersed me into it's world. AMAZING! "

"This game was great. The DM's jumped into NPC's bringing them to life. The Mod was very fun and a great story. They kept the game fun at all times. In my opinion I cant see how a game could run smoothly now without 2 DM's. Great JOB guys. "

"Strong points: The npc's were *very* convincing. Each had different personalities and quirks and the dm's brought them to life. In particular, the old farmer and the dragon were excellent.
There was excellent balance between story/plot and action.

I'd certainly like to be a player in their games in the future.

Weak points: They forgot to tell us a small hak pack was needed, so the game start was delayed a little bit.

There were a few glitches and bumps during play with a couple of the area transitions, but the dm's quickly fixed it and we continued just fine. "

DM 101 Certification

Vethboro dragon seems to be a popular one. Hat's off to Jason Robinson for a great module for beginners and vets alike.

Here's the game page, Vethboro Dragon, hosted by ScrewTape

http://www.neverwinterconnections.com/games/index.cfm/fuseaction/displaygame/id/11760.htm

and now for some reviews,

"THE GREATEST DM ON EARTH - his NPC's really came to life, so much so, I think I could smell them. I thought I was actually in a sequel to Return of the King."
- IAttackTheDarkness

(ah, just joking, and now for the real reviews, heh heh)

(from the first time I dm'd Vethboro, only one player - aka Thief's Challenge)

"Thanks! I've never played a one-on-one game before. It was a fun and interesting experience. Made me want to try DM'ing a one-on-one myself!"

(from the game linked above...)

"Very nice game. I liked it, and will definitely play with this DM again."

"Well its a start, I loved how Screwtape played each NPC, they all so vibrant and alive, ye gods they even have their own accent spoken perfectly, the session was smooth and steady, although some improvement can be made here and there, like more use of the DM tool and more intrigues in the game, but I guess it [comes] with more practice . Thumbs up for you SC, I cant wait to see you speaking in Dwarven "

Other two players did not leave comments

(from my third run of the game)
"A very good, fun session and I would definately join another game hosted by this DM. I think the DM definately gets an ten for effort.
A learning DM but has a good grasp of the cilent and how to make those NPCs come alive. For 3rd DMed session I would not grudge anything yet.

I believe this session was worth playing and the DM could easily be outstanding with more experience."

Thanks for the very good class.

I have a session schedule for DM101 certification.
http://www.neverwinterconnections.com/games/index.cfm/fuseaction/displaygame/id/11856.htm

Thanks for a great website.
[edited to add latest comments]

The world is wonderful, and the GM was very attentive. The only negatives were a minor crash, and a little confusion amongst the players. I can't stress enough, though, how much potential both the server(world) and the GM show. Seems like there will be some great adventures here.

great world, great gm- try this world if you are looking for a totally immersive experience

Had a great lot of fun, there are a few things that need to be changed in places to give the whole thing just that tiny bit more polish to bring it from 9 to 9.5 The DMs did a decent job, however they did not seem to develop on the players' characters so much as the quests. A few minor things that were messed up but nothing fun-breaking. The average RP was okay, need to enforce keeping things IC a little more. I also dont like the idea of everyone using party chat - its unrealistic IMO, you cannot hear someone who is in another town chatting to the bartender. Having said all that - Im definatly coming back to this one.

Good game
Difficult to figure out where some money came from at start - and why we needed it for training at the end - but Ill know next time - yet I wont know how much to save for level 3.....

That said - try it!

I attended NW101 last Tuesday at 8. I ran my cert game tonight (Thursday).

http://www.neverwinterconnections.com/games/index.cfm/fuseaction/displaygame/id/11887.htm
is the URL.

Some comments:"I thought it was a very good game. I would like to play more games with this Dm before I decide to add them to the Top 5 Dm's, but they seem very worthy for it."

"DM did a great job despite server limitations - but once all of the issues were fixed, it flowed really well. I look forward to more games from this guy! Great job!"

"This being my first time, I didn't know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised and how things worked and I had lots of fun playing this game. Floud seemed a little swamped with our party but other than that there were no problems."

I attended DM 101 and this is the first ideal time I've had to host a session outside of a campaign.

Thank you for hosting DM 101 it is a great aid and I have recommened it to a few friends.

http://www.neverwinterconnections.com/games/index.cfm/fuseaction/displaygame/id/12046.htm

"well done !!!"

"After some minor technical difficulties at the start, things were extremely smooth once underway. The DM was great at setting the scene and letting the players play. The pace let us all roleplay but mixed in enough combat to keep us on our toes. Well done! "

"Taniki..in trying circumstances this was a very good game, the atmosphere was very good and I am serious when I say this was one of the best DM'ed games I have played. Well done"

I am quite experienced as a Co-DM handling NPCs and such but this was my first solo DM. Think I'd like to have a Co-DM in future but the way the players really got into the session keeps me inspired.

Best regards,
Taniki

DM 101 Certfication game

Thanks to Garnak for filling in for Old scratch a couple of weeks ago for my DM 101 course..the tip on how to move mutliple monsters/npc's was the answer to my prayers! Here is the link to my certification game being run tommorrow:

http://www.neverwinterconnections.com/games/index.cfm/fuseaction/displaygame/id/11703.htm

COMMENTS REGARDING GAME:

This was my first online gaming experience, and I had a complete and total blast. I really enjoyed playing and meeting the other PCs. A lot of my fears at playing online were proved pointless, and I trully enjoyed every moment of the game. Got killed once, but that's what happens when you negotiate with orcs, eh? Overall two thumbs up for a real blast of a time.

DM-101 Cert Game (Revock & rockviper)

Like Poetic C above, both Revock and I attended school with "substitute teacher" Mr. Garnak, who was called on short notice due to a student giving a wormy apple to the normal classmarm, Mrs. O.Scratch. OldScratch Adds: ... That's MR Scratch.

We finally got around to running our Cert game (Vethboro), alas all of the players died before completing Haspaar's quest

http://www.neverwinterconnections.com/games/index.cfm/fuseaction/displaygame/id/12532.htm

We all had enormous fun and will revive the wanna be heroes to continue in a later session.

Some feedback.....

"You guys did great!! Thanks for the fun. Can't wait until the next time!"

"THE BEST GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYED!! Awesome job both of you"

"Good job for your cert game!"

Thanks for the class and all answered questions!

I have a session schedule for DM101 certification.

http://www.neverwinterconnections.com/games/index.cfm/fuseaction/displaygame/id/12602.htm

Some comments of the session:

"A very well run adventure. It is not easy to have a 1st level character adventure with an 11th, but the DM was able to hold everything together and have everyone be useful. All situations were solveable, though things got dicy quickly if the party acted rashly or didn't pay attention.
The NPCs were well done, and the conflict was well done two. I'd definitely enjoy seeing more of this plot."

"Plotting was great, especially considering that the DM had less than 24 hours to come up with a way to permit us to work out an unexpected conflict. I'm looking forward to many more great episodes."

" Mindolana did an outstanding job of running the game. She was very helpful in getting me into the feel of the campaign. Her use of NPCs was good. Fights were well-placed and balanced for the group."

"Mindolana's games are fun! They are balanced enough to support a huge disparity in levels among the party members, and Mindolana drives a storyline. The DM interaction is always in character, and drives the plot without spoonfeeding the characters a list of standard tasks to be accomplished. The characters have autonomy, and Mindolana has the creativity to generate new interwoven plot threads on the spot based on character decisions."

Hey! took the DM101 class and ran ANOTHER application session:

http://www.neverwinterconnections.com/games/index.cfm/fuseaction/displaygame/id/12493.htmmy comments:

the game went great! the server was strong, i could feel no LAG what so ever. i had 5 players, all active and willing to play. even though the module itself had some problems, the entire game went smoothly and i got many positive reactions.

comments regarding the game page itself:
2 out of the 5 players are not registered users on NWC (not yet), so the scoring and listing on the game page doesn't reflect the game.

looking forward to next time!
