DM101 course: November 2004 Scheduled game link: http://www.neverwinterconnections.com/games/index.cfm/fuseaction/displaygame/id/16554.htm Comments: I am very new to NWC and have not played PnP D&D for over 10 years. I really enjoyed being part of this group and watching the action unfold on this adventure. The stability issues with the server was a concern but the group stuck together. The DM was prepared and did a good job of presenting a interesting and challenging scenario. I am use to a bit more combat with traps/tricks - this heavier roleplaying scenario was good for me to be apart of. Standur did a good job despite several server glitches, which he handled gracefully. His own talent at roleplaying makes for good quality NPCs. As he gains experience with the DM client I would expect his games to flow more smoothly and go from good to great. Very good job, despite server crashing twice. The combats were well presented, and relatively well balanced, though I would havbe liked to have seen just a bit more action. One PC nearly died, but was saved by use of bandages, so the threat level was there. The in depth story was very well thought through and presented, and did not seem linear, which was a good thing. The DM was not a slave to the map either using jumps to manage time, and scenes. Very porficient at jumping from one pc to the other, and the down home old couple, Ma and Pa Slatter, were a riot. Made me laugh many times. Though I have been a DM for over two decades, this scenario was a learning experience for me, as a player, getting the view from the other side of the screen. Thanks for the class Old Scratch. I picked up quite a few useful tips. *Edited for player comments

DM 101 Course: November 2004 (I think. I'll check my dates and update this) Co-DM: Barry_1066 Game for certification consideration: An application game on the PW Annakolia CEP held February 15, 2005. Game link: http://neverwinterconnections.com/games/index.cfm/fuseaction/displaygame/id/17764.htm Player Comment: 02/16/05
10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 Was a great game. I had fun. 9 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 9 10 Main plot was the rescue. The use of a subplot to find a cure for the blindness of the main plotgiver, gave added interest. The plot made good use of existing locations on the server and subtle twists made the party think. NPCs and items were custom built specifically for this session. Action was nicely paced and encounters were well balanced to provide a challenge to the party's abilities and levels. DM possession of some of the hostile creatures provided a sterner test to the party than the standard game AI. NPCs were vivid and distinctive, with appropriate choice of dialogue and phrasing making their personalities believeable. The party were made to work to gain information to progress the storyline. The game did run past the scheduled end time and unfortunately the party had not returned to the main plotgiver to tell of their success. Time constraints prevented the session from running longer, which was a shame. The DMs allowed the players to roleplay more character interaction, rather than forcing the pace of the game. Which in my opinion is always the preferable option. Overall, a well thought out plot, expertly executed by the DMs and a thoroughly enjoyable game. 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 I simply cannot fault this game. It was a one-shot game that left me wanting more. Hurry up Flmngo and make another game... I am first in line. |

I'd just like to know if this is still happening or if it's fizzled out? I've been waiting for my certificate for almost a year now hehe, and I'd just like to know if its a waste of my time to continue to wait. Thanks.

Hi A general question... I was wondering why not other DMs counts then the fleetstreet group.. surely certain DMs teaching (either in a class, or personally) - should count as much as the fleetstreet group.. after all, its a DM certificate, and not a "Fleetstreet DM Certificate" you get... DMs as Lazybones, Kadarr, and Sparky1479 seems to me to be just as qualified to "validate"/"train" DMs, as the fleetstreet group (alone theyre scoring gives a good pointer).. Seems to me, that a DM above a certain point should count just as much.. in my case i was lucky to have Sparky1479 to teach me, and not just a few hours, but over severel sessions.. i imagine that others may have been just as fortunate and been "educated" by other similar DMs.. why dont theyre "education" count? (its not like its a DM on first level - all 3 DMs mentioned are both score-wise, and in other means known by the "public" as great DMs) Im sure most of the other DMs i mentioned wont mind to verify that they have trained and now feel X are up to the standard set by the DM 101 certificate. - Tigrius

My point was more - then no other DMs then the Fleetstreet group seems to be able to hand out a DM 101 Certificate - dispete severel other DMs exist with equal or better skill (if that is the correct word to use - of course better/similar depends on what you judge from). What im wondering about, is why no other DMs Education/courses seems to count - and if it does - how do they hand out a DM 101 certificate ? - Tigrius

DM 101 certificates took months to receive, even back in the day when courses were run regularly. In practical terms, it was nice to eventually see the DM 101 certified sticker in your profile, but it stopped having much relevance to DMing on Neverwinter Connections after the site matured and DMs built up independent records. We had a short debate over whether the DM-Friendly Initiative (DMFI) would provide some sort of certification tied to the DMFI 101 self-teach module. The consensus was that it added little to the experience of being a DM and wasn't worth the trouble. Actually running games is what is important, take the constructive review comments of your players on NWC as your certification, they're more important. On a related note, new DMs will almost always feel some trepidation in starting out, especially with their very first game. This is normal, I certainly was nervous, if reasonably confident due to previous preparation with the module I picked (ran through it as a player) and a decent DM guide that was included. If you pick a DM-friendly module and make it clear that you're a new DM (without going overboard on the modesty), both you and the players will enjoy the game and the players will also cut you some slack.

Hi folks, Honestly, I don't know how certificates were handed out -- that was always some of the other folks' responsibilities. I'd be interested in running some DM 102 sessions at some point, with entry based on people having finished that stand-alone module discussed earlier -- problem is, I'm recently engaged, busy with work, and not having much time at all to allocate to NWN. So it's hard to say how we should proceed. I am still interested in doing some additional classes about DMing, and if there are people out there who'd like to run them, perhaps we can talk about some kind of partnership. I'll tell you one thing -- Old Scratch and the gang put in an incredible amount of work running DM101s. I don't think anybody could sustain that level of committment. If you want to get your feet wet without waiting on something official, I'd highly recommend you find an experienced DM and offer to assist them in a game or two. Thanks, ST

I don't know if I'm just missing out on some kind of clue here, but does anyone arrange the 101 courses anymore? And what's that about a DMFI 101 self-teaching course? Any help would be appriciated, thanks.

I can't speak to Fleet Street and the "live" DM 101 class, but here's the link to "DMFI 101: So You Want To Be A DM" http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=Modules.Detail&id=3837 As a self-teach module, it walks you through the basics of the DM client and the DMFI wand set, to the point where you can then run a meaningful multiplayer session on your own or with another DM.
