In Gray Sector, I played an extremely effective (non-super) former marine surgeon turned Genetech researcher (their department did classified work for the military). She was an EXTREMELY effective DEDICATED/FIELD-MEDIC in game-mechanics and kicked butt in combat (bare-handed, with baseball bat, or with FN2000). She ripped through just about anything in combat and knew how to patch everyone up afterwords. It was a tough build to make and took a lot of time to expeiment with the combat system in the play rooms. I had lots of versions of her including a kick-ass helicopter pilot version. Try flying in combat sometime, it's a lot of fun. There are missiles that fire, etc. I'm REALLY good at flying those puppies.... If sniper role is filled, I'll go with combat pilot.

Similaly, there's working tanks & jeeps. The airplanes and spacecraft are roleplayed internally as area transitions and don't have working conterparts to see maneuver on the field like the apache helicopter or the tank or mos cars and transports.

But, I digress...

Hell, let's go all the way

I played several rounds of Good vs Evil with Forrestwolf and gang and noticed that in D20 Modern warfare, the tanks ROCK!!!! the helicopters get shot down easily, most vechicles are good at transporting multiple people (humvees, tanks, helicopters, etc) but if the vehicles are driven by poor drivers or crash or are shot at a lot then all the occupants WILL take damage and could die if bad enough... other mad ramblings as I think of them

TheBaldMan, (smart/computer guy)
vanya mia, (fast/infilitrator)

Mannendoc- Posted a fighter as a space holder on the game page So maybe he is going soldier?

Seems to me Chiz you could be anything you want. Maybe pick up medic if Jenn finds that build too hard? Maybe be another fighter type to boost our power level Maybe focus on piloting/alien navigation systems as well...or you could play a hot chick who wants to marry a tech geek!

That's my thoughts anyway...heh unless we run into heavy technology issue Buzz will be standing behind everyone with his trusty pistol trying not to get shot...lol

If I've got this right, it might well be:

Boomer, [TBD]
chiz, [TBD]
Jenniza, [sniper]
mannedoc, [TBD, but possibly Soldier]
Smart Alec, [tough/daredevil, demolitions]
TheBaldMan, [smart/field scientist, hacker]
vanya mia, [fast/infilitrator, stealth]

As for Sniper, I'm not sure what that'd entail Though Gunfighter might work - you're not necessarily limited to using pistols as a Gunfighter, and it has limited stealth (Move Silently, but not Hide).

Soldier is very much like a Fighter - lots of bonus feats, but light on the cool abilities other classes have (though it has a few). If MDoc's going Soldier, then he'll be very much the classic all-round one-man army, I'd guess... is that right?

Might just be that Fighter was the class that MDoc chose for his placeholder though! But that does leave the Field Medic slot open, if you wanna give that a try. Or something Charismatic, or Personality, representing an Officer of some kind - lots of buffs/debuffs, kind of like a Bard, there.

Or, if you want to go Tough Guy, then there's Bodyguard free - a class with lots of options to absorb damage on behalf of other people.

Classes i'm not 100% sure on how effective they'll be: Martial Artist, Negotiator. (using martial arts or diplomacy on aliens... well, depends on the aliens, I guess)

Classes I don't think we can take: Mage, Acolyte. As this is the real world, I assume there's no spellcaster classes. Unless one of them's a FOX Journalist.

This is correct. Any other classes/advanced classes are fine, and it's okay if people want to double up as well. It will be inevitable that some of the skills and abilities of d20 Modern classes won't translate well to NWN, so don't preoccupy too much about maxxing your build.

I haven't played around very much with the d20 Modern vehicles, so I haven't built any situations that directly require their use. Part of X-COM is having a drop ship that takes you to places where you need to be (piloted by an NPC). I'll take a look as we go forward and see if there are situations where the other vehicles might work.

Ah okay, as always, every module has its subtle differences from every other module. If this does or does not have real-time driving/flying that's perfectly fine with me, RP driving/flying is just as good... there were some glitches with the D20 system as well as cool things. I'm fine either way. I've seen some really good examples of RP flying in our Firefly campaigns as well as RP driving in the various campaigns I've been in (both as driver and passenger). I'll get some good RP flying expereince under my belt in our Thurday night campaign as well.

I still have to decide if my character in X-COM will be a pilot or not. It's not as critical now that I know more about what you've mentioned about the NPC & drop ship, etc. My Thursday character is a comba pilot and our sole means of defending the freight ship with her attached fighter ship to an external port. I'll get my fill of RP flying for the month from that character.

While I will give XP for the character background posts that some have put up thus far, remember that we're going to start right as you are being transferred to this mysterious new agency, X-COM. You'll all begin having just met in a crowded armored personnel carrier, en route at high speed to some unspecified destination. You only know that you're in the western United States, having just arrived in the middle of the night at a generic military facility by plane from your nation/base of origin. Your orders are basically open ended and without specificity as to how long this new assignment will last. At every point there have been armed men in unmarked uniforms telling you where to go next, but none of them have so much as offered a grunt in response to any of your questions. You suppose you'll learn more once you get to your destination; thus far each of the strangers crowded into the interior of the APC seems to be in the same boat as you.

So feel free to develop any of that in a post, as a way of introducing your character.

They had told him it was a glorious opportunity to serve the Motherland, a chance for new challenges, new responsibilities. Grim jargon, all of it. It meant, We're going to throw away the key.

He knew it had been coming, in the days following what was officially being labelled 'The Kalinovskaya Incident'. People had died, some of them true patriots. Attention had been drawn to an operation that was supposed to go un-noticed. Objective Achieved, he'd made sure of it, but at a cost some in the organisation had felt was too high. He had wondered what was to become of him. A desk job? Forced retirement? A teaching post at one of the Training Academies?

No. It was far, far worse than that. They'd sent him to America.

And yet, this wasn't working out as he'd expected. Some diplomatic post, he'd assumed, upon recieving his orders. Maybe working in an Embassy. But this? No-one had said a word of greeting, there had been no reception, nothing. Just swift transport from base to base, journeys behind tinted glass in unmarked vehicles, and now this; sharing space in a... truck with a collection of people who - if he was any judge - had no more idea why they were here than he did.

And so he waited, for someone to make the first move, for someone to give some clue, keeping as impassive and as dignified a face as he could. You may be the lowest of the low, they told every recruit, but it doesn't matter how high you climb - in the eyes of the World, You are Russia!

So now, as always, that's what he'd be.

ooc i had emergency out-patient surgery on thursday making it difficult to sit (yes I've been in pain for last few weeks) i'm on perchocet currently. i still have to 100% make my character from scratch for X-COM, now that I finished dealing with Susan Polerton, and Thursday's new characters too. It has been a week of new characters.

I'm still on this. I just wanted to keep everyone in the loop as to why the delays and such. I have a few games this weekend and I even had to get to a doctor's office visit by myself today, so life moves on, as they say.

I'll do my best to keep things in line for this game prep and Monday night.

hugs all,
Stephanie

Doctor Baron cleaned his glasses as he glanced over at the other strangers. When being told of a transfer, this wasn't what he expected. If he had known he'd be picked up and just carried away, he would have made sure his patients were taken care of. He was already going down the list in his head of patients who would be asking what was going on.
Will Gears, suffering from depression from a divorce.
Linda Lakes, recovering both physically and mentally from a car accident.
And then of course there was Jim Borders, a man who actually claimed he was seeing aliens in his neighborhood. That one was a real nut case.

Just a heads-up for Jenniza, or anyone else who would like to use heavy weapons at the start:

The sniper rifles in X-COM/D20 Modern require the Exotic Firearms feat to use. Note that nothing requires that you use an actual sniper rifle; you can choose to be a sniper with an assault rifle just as easily. But if you want to use an actual sniper rifle you will need to take all 3 firearms feats (Personal, Advanced, and Exotic).

Also FYI I have added a "prequel" mission to the start of the campaign that will give us all a chance to play around with some of the d20M weapons systems in a controlled environment. That will probably take all of the first session.

tentative background: Jane Swift aka Dead-Eye Jane
Return To Top

Jane Swift or "Dead-Eye Jane" as she is known to some has an eerie habit of staring at people. It comes from sizing them up for the one day she may need to put a bullet between their eyes, which she is a bit too good at.

On the surface, she was a socialite who raised funds for victims of alledged alien abductions and other family traumas. She used that as a cover for her CIA assignments as a sniper to travel to all parts of the world. She's recently gone into seclusion for a new assignment: X-COM.

“De Farrago, we have an assignment for you.” The information had surprised her. She struggled to hold down that and the elation, and display in the emotionless manner they were expected to maintain. She had responded with thanks, careful to use an even tone, while taking the rather slim dossier that now resided in her case. A liaison role would have been normal to begin with, and to put her in the field so soon was against policy. Now sitting and swaying easily with any bumps as the APC rolled along, warm and rather uncomfortable in the formal suit, Catalina ran her eyes over the people she travelled with. Her eyes wandered from the bespectacled gentleman, to the rather hard-eyed woman, to the balding and bearded fellow, speculating idly on who they might be. So far there had been little conversation, and beyond accents she had no real information to go on.

“I can’t deny, this is soon for you to be in the field so actively, but your talents fit the desired profile sufficiently well to satisfy the official request, and frankly,” here the normally impassive face of the commander had wavered, “the information we have been supplied is a little… unusual. Were it not a trusted relationship….” He’d tailed off and coughed lightly. “For this reason, a full briefing is being withheld, you need to go into this with an open mind.” She’d listened, now concealing puzzlement, through the rest of the briefing concerning travel, contacts, reporting structures, plus the standard information on personnel arrangements and matters of protocol. It didn’t tell her a great deal, and nothing Catalina had learned so far had improved the situation. From their manner it looked like at least of some of her fellow passengers were civilians, and she wondered if they were any wiser.

“This is not an assignment for which we are going to pull a key agent out of the field. I’ll be frank, De Farrago, there’s a chance someone is trying to make a laughing stock out of the service, and that won’t do. So...” The commander had leaned forward with a severe expression at that point. “… we’re officially removing the limitations of the normal inter-agency exchange arrangement. You have license to learn what you can, however you can, and report back if you can.” He’d leaned back and tented his hands. “Don’t put yourself, or the service, in an unsafe position, but we want to know what’s going on, De Farrago.” Her eyes wandered across the remaining passengers and on to stoic expression of the big man in the Russian uniform. Protocols aside, this could be fun.

OK, looks like I am going to play an American doctor - male, in case you were wondering, BaldMan. He will eventually likely be a field medic. He is from Wyoming of all places, so he has some experience with animals, camping, outdoors, survival skills, guns, etc. He received his MD from Harvard Medical School in Emergency Medicine, and spend his first year post-residency doing some work for CIA Special Ops. He does not know Jane - Jenniza's character.

Jim looked at the rest of the group. His superiors at special ops hadn't exactly been forthcoming with information. Of course, the pre-mission briefings for the eight missions he had been on in the past year hadn't exactly been filled with details, either. Jim had the sense the directors thought of him as a glorified insurance policy, in case something went wrong and one of their prize agents got seriously hurt. Oh sure, he knew how to shoot a gun - as a boy growing up in Wyoming, nearly everyone did - but he wasn't a trained killer like most of the special ops team. The directors had tended to give him the minimum required information, since generally he wasn't going to be doing anything unless something went badly wrong anwyay.

From Harvard Medical School to glorified EMT for the CIA - well, guess it's better than prescribing antibiotics for colds at Mass General. I have seen some places I'd never have seen otherwise...

Anyway, to the matter at hand - why the hell was I sent here, and who are all these people? They sure weren't dressed like Americans. Maybe business casual has a different meaning in Europe? And a couple of uniforms...hmm. Once again, no one had wanted to tell him anything other than "keep your eyes open" and "this is a potentially important mission - you may be away from home for weeks or even several months".

Jane had been doing fund-raising for FOAA (Famlies of Alien Abductees) as well as her field work for the CIA, security for a visiting foreign dignitary. She had been pulled away from both for a new mission, one she was told little about; but, that she was told to report to duty for immediately. The uniformed men in the black helicopter took her to a site where she was transferred with very little explanations other than that the orders were confirmed by the right people in charge. From there she was transferred by a black van to another van and eventually to a group on another van.

The group seemed just as puzzled as she was by all the secrecy as she was. There was a woman and some men, apparently some were of different nationalities even. It had seemed that each of them had been through as much of an ordeal as she had been, so, chances are, they had all been through the appropriate checkpoints and background checks by this point. Asking the obvious question of where they were going was as pointless as asking why they were all here. None probably had a clue. Still, it was a nice icebreaker.

Jane spoke up, "Name's Jane Swift. I guess I'm as clueless as the next as to why we're here. I suppose they wanted us to meet and get to know each other. I did security work for the CIA as a sniper... on the side I raised money for Families of Alien Abductees, a non-profit charity."

Please scroll down to Lazybones' X-COM and look for Jane Swift. Bob spent all weekend on my character's portrait and just finished today. All artwork was done in MSPaint by Bob. The original 600x800 will be available shortly on his webpage. He made changes to account for NWN limitations.

Buzz was not at all taken aback by Jane's comment about alien abduction. He had hacked enough government sites to know the possibilities were high. In fact, his quick mind raced re-tracing sites he had hacked. He could almost see the code and was trying to match her name with any of the information he had crossed in those sights. No luck. On the bright side, nothing to feel guilty about. However, she was now another person kept in mystery.

He glanced about the rest of the strangers scratching his "shaggyesque" goatee. Most of them smelled of danger; some even looked angry. Best to keep quite and watch, he thought.

All of the characters look great! Mannedoc will be joining us next week. For now we have 6, and since everyone posted something about their character backgrounds, I will award the usual 300xp plus the 50% bonus for full participation, for 450xp total.

Remember that everyone needs to create their character locally using the D20 Modern Base Module prior to the start of play. Characters will remain in your local vault throughout the course of the campaign. Excess XP and items will be removed from your character at the start of play.

ooc: I figured you said it was okay to take some clothing. I like a lot of the D20 clothes, so I picked the clothes that looked nce on my character (all ac0, no stats, no nothing, just ordinary clothing that look pretty... gotta look nice as a dilletente.

keep or toss as you see fit. they just looked pretty is all.

they are on pages 3 and 4 of inventory.

didn't know what to do with the silly dagge that the game gives at the start of game so i left it on page one of inventory , figuring it would auto-clean at start of game.

mailed you my character within the last hour to your wife's email
