Just to clarify, no one has suggested building another workshop as far as I can recall. Doing so would double your manufacturing capacity in the same way that building the extra research lab did earlier. The same goes for medical capacity.

Current manufacturing is split between Base Defense and Laser Pistols.

Catalina looked at the email and shrugged with the air of slight ambivalence evident in every decision made regarding base facilities since the confiscation of the alien weapons. "Everything she said. Rifles and alloys and keep building what we're building. Why not?"

((OOC - Just a thought on the manufacturing/building side of things. If we split resources stuff takes twice as long to build, is that so LB? And if so then presumably it takes twice as long to get both things we are building? From basic queueing systems I'm wondering whether if we'd focused on one thing we'd have had that item available more quickly but the second thing would still have been available in the same time period as it has taken for us to get both. Not 100% sure on this as we do have 1 laser ready going this way, and not sure I'm explaining it very well, but wondered if it was worth considering in future.))

That is true. It's definitely a tradeoff. If you'd put all your manufacturing into Base Defense it would have been ready already, but then you wouldn't have a Laser Pistol going into the next mission.

Ah yes, but then the base defense could not incorporate the laser technology into its defense system right? Or is it that making things too complicated?

I think the prerequisites are:
Base Defense Lasers
-> Laser Rifles
-> Laser Pistols
-> Laser Weapons

or something like that...
so it'll be a few generations of tech, before we have Base Defense Lasers :/

actually, I'd rather be discouraged from writing stuff like the above (It starts to look like Finite State Machines nd Automata Theory and takes away from the Roleplay... but I'll do the breakdown upon request and it can get quite interesting from an academic perspective to reverse engineer the game mechanics of the X-COM system if I were to actually put my mind to it... I'd rather just enjoy the roleplay though.

Vasily frowns, as usual. "We have new guns. Should start getting armour now too. As it is, we may as well go out and fight wearing silk shirt. Means we need bigger building space to make all this. And quick."

Just FYI, I'll open up the server a bit early tonight. Anyone hanging around 10-15 minutes before game time, drop in to help GW and I test out the bleeding system. It may be messy, but I promise free heals all around before we start.

Catalina walked out of the meeting room and turned for the showers, a somewhat grim look on her face, musing on the day. "Working blind's tough, I'd be glad of some advice right now." She grabbed a snack bar in the recreation room and stood eating it. "I'm still not sure if I should have tried to keep one of those weapons, but they're a little large to hide and well.... locker checks are not beyond the realms of possibility. Still, at least I got some pictures."

Walking as she ate, Catalina continued to the bunk room. "Of course one of the yanks had to have the new weapon, even if it does look like the big fella is the best shot. Probably under orders, wouldn't want a potential spy handling it after all. Or maybe Calamity thinks it's best kept out of the hands of a foriegn operative." She stopped and opened her locker. "Suppose we'll see if it was just her or orders when they have a new one ready."

The little camera was placed inside and she pulled the scanner from her equipment belt. "Got to have a look at this, though." Catalina grinned to herself. "Buzz obviously isn't that politically driven, or if he was supposed to keep it he's playing a different game to some." She tossed it in her hand and then closed the locker. "Best take it back and report on it first I suppose." Turning she headed back out of the room.

I think Forrestwolf dealt with a similat issue about the death -> resurrection -> auto-reset-script-for-hero-flags in D20 without the need for resting. I think it was a custom script he did for us in the SuperHeroes game when we complained enough.

Basically, there's a script for resetting the Hero flags to give all the nice benefits and such...

It was constantly needing to be called he realized after things like DM-heals, resurrections, medkits and first aid kits and all sorts of stuff... it was really getting in the way of game play, so he liberally sprinkled the script calling all over the place, in DM wands, in the functions, in everything. Pretty soon, the problem was history.

------------

Also, side note: the 10 minute rule is optional according to Forrestwolf, there's a switch that can be flipped somewhere but I don't know what it is, but I think a DM can flip it in game. He used to do it in our Dim Hoppers game when the undead got to be too ridiculous.

FROM: Jane Swift, X-COM Field Agent
TO: Michael Garret, X-COM UN Liaison
RE: Mission Report – Shasta County, California

Night fell as we were flying into the area. Satellite feed was that there was a bogey landed at one farm in Shasta County in particular. This was not on any of the radars; but, it was hypothesized that we’d be detected quickly on our approach, so we had to fly in extremely fast and low at difficult maneuvers. Upon landing, I immediately took to the shadows before exiting the ship as the plan was that I was to stick to the rear of the group and act as fire support with the laser pistol in addition to keeping the technology safe from falling into the wrong hands.

We were already in combat the instant we stepped off the ship, so it was a good thing I was in the shadows, as I stayed out of the line of direct fire. All the civilians and animals were down from what I could see or were going down before I could see them alive. I only took those shots at the Sectoids which I deemed safe and in direct support of my teammates, then took to the shadows and made use of cover each time. There was plenty of cover and shadows with the house and farm there and it being night. I struck a couple of targets with the laser pistol. On a side note, it’s a very accurate weapon and packs quite a punch. I’m going to look into adding a scope to it, I think, to improve the accuracy further.

The Sectoid ship was up on the hill. Vasily crawled up the hill to approach it, I was in the shadows below the hill observing with Catalina. I observed that what sounded like gas was coming from the ship and warned the others. Others observed similar sounds. Catalina and I decided to circle around the hill and observe the ship further. Several of us noted that the ship hatch was closing and rushed the ship entrance. I entered after some of the others and in the shadows. I was spotting where the Sectoids were and pointing them out to the others. I only took shots when safe and was in the shadows again to continue spotting for more trouble further into the ship.

After the Sectoids were killed, we still had the ship to contend with. To my knowledge, the problem was not identified out loud to the group as a large fire broke out. I put it out with 3 fire extinguishers. I took pictures, as did others, of the ship interior.

Inside the house, we searched for survivors and found a woman behind a locked door. It took a lot of convincing; but, the two doctors, Allen and Baron, had the best success with her. Apparently she had a gun and had already called the cops and they were already on their way according to Pilot Yushi. X-COM clean-up crews would have their hands full apparently. The woman apparently was told to stay upstairs by the man downstairs as he thought there were robbers outside. She heard lots of shooting and she was scared for her life by the way she threatened us on our arrival to the floor and her door. With nothing more for me to do upstairs, I simply went downstairs and searched around. Downstairs I found the man: dead, with gun, bullets, and life’s paperwork including the daughter’s college application. Also, I found some of their family belongings which I made look like they corroborated the woman’s story of a robbery, figuring the X-COM clean-up crew would remove any sign of the Sectoids, X-COM or anything incriminating. I’ll be going over the paperwork with the researchers to give them a hand to see if there’s anything special about any of it. It is always possible that this stuff could be returned if it were deemed clear of use to us. I somehow sense that there’s something special about the survivor and I’d like to concentrate on the college application in particular. There’s got to be some special reason why the Sectoids spent so long at that site and defended it so heavily. I think the daughter has something to do with it.

We left shortly after that.

Dr Sandesh was in one of the research laboratories when Catalina found him. Assuming the lantern smile and her most affable air, she tugged down the neckline of her uniform for good measure and approached him. She placed the motion sensor on the bench in front of him and spoke brightly.

"Hi Doc, here's the motion sensor. Lucky me got to use it and, double the luck, to come and report to you." She stroked the fingers of one hand over the motion sensor, almost lovingly. "It seems to work wonderfully. We were fired upon as soon as we arrived, so I didn't get to test it as much as I'd have liked to."

A sheepish smile added to the regret evident in Catalina's voice. "I didn't actually manage to get it to work on a Sectoid, or try it through metal of a ship," enthusiasm now entered her tone, "but it did pick up a girl in a house even though I was outside. Even more clearly when I got closer to where she was."

A finger twined her own ponytail and the sheepish smile returned. "I probably need more practise to use it properly, and I'd love for you to explain to me how it works sometime, but do you want me to leave it here for now?"

((occ at the end of the session Buzz asked if he could help to track down the hacker that infiltrated the bases system. As I recall Drake said "We have someone taking care of it" while *name escapes me* said "Sure we will send you the info." this post is to clarify this, as my question was not answered before we were ported))

Buzz looked back an forth between the two ladies, "Well do you want my help in tracking the hacker or not? No offense Ms. Drake but I doubt anyone in the FBI has my skill in this area. I should know. Before I was...well lets just say 'asked to join'... I saw most of their records. A person in the business I used to be in liked to know the competition." Buzz did not try to hide his smirk. "Now what data did this hacker attempt to manipulate or steal?"

In response to Buzz's question, Drake leans in, close enough so that he can smell the faint scent of her deodorant. Her voice is low, pitched to carry only to his ears. "You think you're so smart. Well, I know it was you. Thought you'd covered your tracks, hacker? Well, your first mistake was using the X-phone. Every time one of those things is turned on, we know it. Didn't know that? Your little joke on me, oh, it was funny. I'm sure we'll all be laughing if your breach causes the aliens to discover the location of this base. You just remember, while you are playing your little games, Americans are dying to keep our country safe. You might not care about that, but I do. Don't forget it."

Before he or any of the others can reply, she turns and strides out of the room.

The day after the Shasta mission, you receive the usual e-mail from Dr. Wagner.

FROM: DR. KIMBERLY WAGNER, X-COM RESEARCH LEAD
TO: MEMBERS, ALPHA TEAM
CC: MICHAEL GARRET, GRACE THELON BELUCA
RE: Research/Manufacturing Priorities

Per your recent suggestions, X-COM has embarked upon new research and manufacturing projects. Research Lab 1 has begun advanced work on the Alien Alloys, while Lab 2 has shifted to focus on Laser Rifles, pending reassignment if we elect to shift priorities in that area. Dr. Sandesh has requested that he be added to the Heavy Weapons Platform project, which has puttered along under minimum staffing levels for some time. He feels that he can add some new perspective to that project, and move the research forward.

The construction of the missile defense battery atop the X-COM base is nearly completed; the battery will be operational by the end of the week. The rest of Chief Engineer Thelon Beluca's team continues work on the Laser Pistols project and reports that they will have a second production model completed by the end of the week.

To summarize, here the current options, and our priorities:

Research Priorities (20 points)
  • Laser Weapons: Research complete. Laser pistols are under construction.
  • Laser Rifle (8 ): A more powerful man-portable laser weapon. Research of this system will open up more powerful ship-mountable lasers, and ultimately a Laser Defense system for the X-COM base.
  • Motion Scanner: Research complete.
  • Heavy Weapons Platforms (2): no progress to report at this time.
  • Alien Medicine: Research complete. Dr. White's lab will produce a regular supply of the new medikits each week. He reports that when the lab is involved in research projects, such as alien autopsies, the rate of production will slow.
  • Sectoid Autopsy: Research complete.
  • Alien Alloys (10): Being researched in Lab 1.
  • Alien Handgun: Per our arrangement with the United States Government, two of the pistols captured during the Shasta mission have been retained for our research. However, until we capture some of the alien power source, research in this area will yield limited results.
  • Sectoid Prisoner: While the alien language remains elusive, and the prisoner remains uncooperative, we hope that interrogation will yield useful results. Buzz's decryption of the alien number system offers hope for future progress in this area.
  • Alien Navigation: A study of the control systems in the captured UFO may provide us with a better understanding of how the alien ships function.
  • Alien Power Supply: The ship you captured on the Shasta mission had an intact reactor, but the fuel supply was lost. Preliminary study indicates that they use a unique power source which is kept on board their ships in a magnetic containment system. We believe that this is the same material that the aliens use (in much smaller quantities) to power their personal weapons. Capture of some of this material should be a high priority.

Manufacturing Priorities (10 points)
  • Research Capacity: Research Lab 2 is fully operational. We can expand our research capacity still further, but this will require drilling out new room space.
  • Medical Capacity: Dr. White has requested that we separate the sickbay from the research center, and create a separate lab for his team. This would require a significant investment of resources.
  • Manufacturing Capacity: Chief Thelon has suggested that X-COM could benefit greatly from the construction of a second workshop, especially once the Personal Armor technology becomes available.
  • Base Defense (5): Missile Defense is under construction. Chief Thelon has noted the technical feasibility of creating a laser defense system, once our research into laser weapons technology is sufficiently advanced.
  • Laser Pistol (5): Currently under construction.
  • Motion Sensor: Additional copies may be constructed once field testing of the prototype is complete.
  • Medikit: Doctor White's medical lab can construct a number of these kits each week without compromising our manufacturing capacity. If you wish to dedicate additional resources to the project, the kits can be produced at a faster rate.

As I did before, your current allocations are listed in parens above.

As I noted in-game, each of you are welcome to spend your off-time supporting any of the above projects. If you wish to do so, just note it in an IC post. Also provide the total skill modifier of the skill that you wish to use to provide support; I will make a roll and notify you of the results in a future post. Note that it is possible to hinder a project if you roll poorly, so you may want to only support projects where your skill level is fairly decent.

Dr. Sandesh does not look comfortable as Catalina makes her offer. Other than a slight twist of his lips as he looks up at her entry, he does not acknowledge her existence as she speaks. When she is finished, he says to the wall, "Yes, leave it there."

Then, without further ado, the Egyptian scientist turns and leaves her standing there alone.

RE: Tech Report – Laser Pistol (Field Testing)

The Laser Pistol fired about as accurately as a regular pistol without a specialized scope. I strongly encourage anyone using it to add an Electro-Optic scope with Night-Vision, or better, if they intend to use this weapon in combat. Once it hits, however, it packs quite a nice punch… well, I guess the correct term would be quite a nice cutting tool. I’d venture to guess anywhere from 50% to 100% more damage than a typical pistol… the big difference, however is that the type of damage seems to cut through more effectively. I’d be anxious to hear more details from the autopsies as to specifics. I can help them point out which ones I shot with the laser pistol by where I hit them and what to look for. They’d do most of the work obviously; I’d just do some pointing.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance, please.

ooc: chiz, feel free to use me as an NPC in a post if you wanted to do the autopsy, I'd just point and stuff. Hopefully, you'd have an idea of roughly what my character is like by now, generally friendly and stuff. don't have to if not interested. Same wtih LB, either of you are free to do so. Generally, she's even-keeled and reserved in crowds or with strangers.
