Just to clarify: Handguns generally do 2d6. Rifles generally do 2d8, although some of the heavier ones do 2d10. Laser pistols do 3d6 fire damage. The "No Damage" property causes the weapon to not inflict its typical ballistic damage when fired, although sometimes it will do 1 point anyway (I think this is a limitation of the engine). Some foes will take more or less damage from certain types of attacks. It's good to keep a close eye on things. As for the forum posts, let's just all tone things down a bit, and remember that the dividing line between IC and OOC isn't always clear when one is posting on an internet forum. I'll respond to the other posts tomorrow.

This is over and above the 8 skill points that went into Profession that LB worked out something in combination with my character's profession. Hard lessons learned. :/ |
| Don't gang up on me because I didn't write any of the D20 code - I only adapted the DMFI wands to work with it properly, but I do know that the system has limitations like the one Jenn just pointed out. I believe when Forrestwolf made the new classes, he left the recommended part alone because few people used that button. Also, in case anybody's curious, the firearm progression is: personal weapons (pistols)-> rifles->heavy weapons (plasma rifles, .50 cal sniper rifle, etc). Like armor, you'll need personal weapon and rifle profeciences to get heavy weapons. You can also take weapon focus on all three profs. On an unrelated note, due to my new work schedule, I won't be joining you all anymore. I'm working 12 hour shifts and this campaign ends too late for me (midnight). Have fun and enjoy my bleeding system.

OOC: Seeya around GW! Thanks for all the fish. IC: The mood in the rec-room seems to irritate the big Russian, and after muttering a few words to Buzz in reply, he tries to make his voice heard. "This why I say we need get workshop! Ridiculous for United Nations agency to draw straw for equipment. We tighten our belts, yes? We manage with normal guns for now, reap reward later. Heavy industrialisation, it work for Stalin. Once we get new space for engineers, upgrading base and getting new equipment much easier. That is good, yes?" *** OOC: (edit) Although I tacitly agree with the idea that equipment should ideally go to people who can use it to the full first, I do think we shouldn't be too strict on it for a couple of reasons - one, because new stuff is on the way and if we all die because Player Y had the magic wand and Player Z didn't, I think we would have died anyway. Secondly, it puts poor ol' Boomer's psychologist at the bottom of the pile for everything, which really sucks. So, maybe it's not such a good idea. Psychologists deserve cool stuff too!

A couple of days after handing in the motion detector Catalina headed back down to see Dr Sandesh. Having ascertained where he was working, she adopted a casual smile and approached him. "Hi Doctor, I just popped down to ask a couple of questions about the detector, if I can. We really should know how to optimise it's use in the field." "Can you tell me what kind of a range you think it will have? I imagine that checking through barriers will have an impact but I wondered how close we'd need to be to pick up anything at all." "The other thing is, is there some way it will be able to tell what it's sensing? I'm not sure how it works but would we be able to tell the difference between a human and a sectoid? Would the display be any different? If it is then we can test it on one another and try to work out how." She smiled wryly. "That's if you haven't already calibrated it to do so of course."

Dr. Sandesh still seems ill at ease with Catalina, but this time he at least answers her questions. on May 25, 2008, 1:19 PM, vanya mia wrote:| "Can you tell me what kind of a range you think it will have? | In tests it functioned clearly out to about 30 meters. After that, you start to get... duplicate feedback, ghosts, you would say? Barriers affect its function depending on the density of the material. It can detect through a wood or drywall barrier without difficulty, but a moderately thick layer of metal will block its function.

| Yes, I have already made improvements based on your report. It is all in the technical file. Size calibration is integrated in the production model, if not precisely. It should be able to tell a child--or one of the gray aliens--from a human adult, however. He picks up a large mechanical assembly that looks like a turret. "Now, if you will excuse me, I have some tests to conduct." Without waiting for a reply, he heads off into the lab.

FROM: Jane Swift, X-COM Alpha Team Field Agent TO: Dr. Kimberly Wagner, X-COM Research Lead CC: Members, Alpha Team RE: Project Update We might want to start sorting through the lists, and prioritizing them for this week and possible future week projects, such as:
Research Priorities: (considering current projects)
- 0) Research Completed: Laser Weapons, Motion Scanner, Alien Medicine, Sectoid Autopsy
- 1a) Alien Alloys: (Research Lab 1) (precursor to body armors and total Earth military use)
- 1b) Laser Rifles: (Research Lab 2) (precursor to HQX defense lasers and total Earth military use)
- 1c) Heavy Weapons Platforms: Dr. Sandesh and another researcher want to tackle this.
- 2a) Alien Handguns & Alien Power Supply: Pending research into containment system for fuel. (military & engineering applications)
- 2b) Sectoid Prisoner: Pending research into Sectoid language (re: Buzz’s decryption of alien number system)
- 2c) Alien Navigation: Research may yield military and interstellar applications, including their homeworld.
Manufacturing Priorities: (after current projects complete)
- 1) Manufacturing: Produce one lab every week from now on… ie, we go into a mass production mode.
- 2a) Base Defense: Complete Missile Defense, then eventually the goal is to have Laser Defense.
- 2b) Medical: Separate Medical from Research, then as needed.
- Research: As needed.
- Ship Mounted Lasers: TBD
- Armor: TBD
- Laser Rifle: TBD
- Motion Sensor: As needed
- Laser Pistol: As needed
- Medikits: Dr. White’s Medical Lab can produce these each week as well as the Manufacturing Lab.
OOC: Speculation: Prerequisites: Laser Weapons -> Pistols -> Rifles -> Ships -> Base Defense Alien Alloys -> Armors -> Light -> Medium -> Heavy

ooc I got sidetracked this weekend, and forgot to post this update earlier. It summarizes where you are to date, and (I hope) reflects the decisions made in the last sessions and in the forums. Also, with tonight's mission being a fairly long one, I intend to start en route in the Skyranger. I'll post the mission briefing a little later today. Your newly-manufactured items for this week will be provided on the ship's locker. * * * * *
FROM: DR. KIMBERLY WAGNER, X-COM RESEARCH LEAD TO: MEMBERS, ALPHA TEAM CC: MICHAEL GARRET, GRACE THELON BELUCA RE: Update on Current Projects The Missile Defense system is now operational. X-COM Main HQ now has the ability to intercept alien vessels in the vicinity directly. Workshop 1 has delivered the second production model laser pistol. The weapon has been placed in the Experimental Weapons locker in the alien containment laboratory. Dr. Sandesh has submitted his report on the prototype motion sensor. He has made some improvements, and reports that the workshop can now accept orders to produce more of the devices as needed. Work has begun on the Alien Alloys project. With the amount of resources being applied to this project, Chief Engineer Grace Thelon Beluca reports that she expects swift results. Dr. White has delivered another 3 medikits, which have been placed in storage in the alien containment laboratory. These kits, based on our research into the alien substance recovered in Utah and our study of the Sectoid corpses, have greatly increased our medical capabilities. The self-contained kits contain clearly labeled injectable serums, disinfectant sprays, and press-on bandages. The advances in regenerative medicine derived from the alien bio-sample allow this kit to be used by any X-COM agent with basic training, and its effects will be realized far faster than with traditional medicine. In addition to treating wounds, medikits can also be used to purge an afflicted person of toxins or infection. More advanced medikits that use nanotechnology may be researched at a later point. Dr. White encourages you to recover more alien samples, if possible, and more dead or living aliens for study. He has also drawn up a proposal for the development of an advanced surgical kit, which can be used by a trained doctor to resuscitate someone who is close to death. I have asked Dr. White to keep us all posted about his progress. Research Priorities Research Priorities (20 points)
- Laser Weapons: Research complete. Laser pistols are under construction.
- Laser Rifle (8 ): A more powerful man-portable laser weapon. Research of this system will open up more powerful ship-mountable lasers, and ultimately a Laser Defense system for the X-COM base.
- Motion Scanner: Research complete.
- Heavy Weapons Platforms (2): no progress to report at this time.
- Alien Medicine: Research complete. Dr. White's lab will produce a regular supply of the new medikits each week. He reports that when the lab is involved in research projects, such as alien autopsies, the rate of production will slow.
- Sectoid Autopsy: Research complete.
- Alien Alloys (10): Being researched in Lab 1.
- Alien Handgun: Per our arrangement with the United States Government, two of the pistols captured during the Shasta mission have been retained for our research. However, until we capture some of the alien power source, research in this area will yield limited results.
- Sectoid Prisoner: While the alien language remains elusive, and the prisoner remains uncooperative, we hope that interrogation will yield useful results. Buzz's decryption of the alien number system offers hope for future progress in this area.
- Alien Navigation: A study of the control systems in the captured UFO may provide us with a better understanding of how the alien ships function.
- Alien Power Supply: The ship you captured on the Shasta mission had an intact reactor, but the fuel supply was lost. We can research how their propulsion technology works, but until we capture some fuel, we will not be able to test its function.
Manufacturing Priorities (10 points)
- Research Capacity: Research Lab 2 is fully operational. We can expand our research capacity still further, but this will require drilling out new room space.
- Medical Capacity: Dr. White has requested that we separate the sickbay from the research center, and create a separate lab for his team. This would require a significant investment of resources.
- Manufacturing Capacity: Chief Thelon has suggested that X-COM could benefit greatly from the construction of a second workshop, especially once the Personal Armor technology becomes available.
- Base Defense (5): Missile Defense is complete; engineers are awaiting reassignment.
- Laser Pistol (5): Currently under construction.
- Motion Sensor: Additional copies may be constructed now that field testing of the prototype is complete. Motion Sensors are consumable; when their power cells are depleted, they must be returned to X-COM for recalibration (i.e. discarded). Fortunately they are fairly easy to make.
- Medikit: Doctor White's medical lab can construct a number of these kits each week without compromising our manufacturing capacity. If you wish to dedicate additional resources to the project, the kits can be produced at a faster rate.

As I had written to Lazybones last week about the laser pistol, I was originally planning on upgrading it with an electro-optic scope at MY expense and then GIFTING it to someone else in the party at a later date based on need and merit. I still hope this is how it turns out. I had been figuring on doing this with a number of weapons, because I didn't think some of you could afford the electro-optic scopes and I was trying to help some of you out.

FROM: Jane Swift TO: vasily.kasprjak0013 CC: Members, Alpha Team RE: Project Update I agree with you on the alien navigation and alien language being important. That's why I placed those as relatively equal priorities, after the laser rifle and alien armor breakthroughs. I'm glad we're in agreement on this. Your assessment of the significance of these advancements is correct. Taking steps forward from Buzz's work to learning their language and their navigatiion technology will put us another couple steps towards defeating them. I also glad we agree on increasing manufacturing facilities.

| Sorry, you cannot upgrade pistols with the scopes. The model parts just don't mesh right. The laser rifle comes with a built-in scope, with a bonus to the attack roll.

ooc I modified the production-model Motion Scanner. The dual powers (Amplify and the custom power) were causing problems because the custom script runs when ANY item powers are activated. The new device has only the custom scanner power (10 charges), and gives +3 to the user's Listen skill when equipped. * * * * * IC The briefing is fast and to the point. Most of you are still groggy, having been woken from a deep sleep at 4 in the morning. Present are Liaison/Director Garret, Dr. Wagner, and Chief Engineer Thelon Beluca. When asked about Dr. White and Ken Yushi, Garret says that they are already prepping the Skyranger. There's no sign of Agent Drake; maybe she's still getting her beauty sleep. "Okay, here's the situation," Garret says, looking the same as always, like a man who's never needed sleep in his life. "We've got an intervention mission at a research site in Australia. The Aussies are full consortium members, but this place... well, it's pretty 'off the radar'. We know they've been involved in some alien-related research, and they've shared some useful data with us on the alien operations in the Southern Hemisphere, but the Australian government has been reluctant in sharing details about exactly what they're working on at the site. We do know that it's a Class 5 rated biological containment facility... in plain English, that's the sort of place where work on Ebola or smallpox is carried out." Dr. Wagner picks up the narrative. "There have been three known alien incursions into Australian territory since the start of the alien troubles. Three hours ago, we intercepted a coded burst from the site of the research base, some sort of distress call. All attempts to contact the base or respond to the message have failed. At first, the Australians were reluctant to elaborate about what was happening, but after some... diplomatic pressure, they've agreed that X-COM should be the ones to intervene, given our expertise in this area." "Ken's prepping the Ranger with drop tanks; this is going to be an extreme-altitude boost, so dress warmly. Even with the tanks, it's going to be a one-way trip; we're already making arrangements for refuel and getting a hazard containment team on site, but they'll be a good six hours behind you. The Australian military has cordoned off the area, but they have orders not to move in unless the situation grows... dire." "Questions? This is a high-profile mission, and if successful, we might be able to impress our consortium members that X-COM can help out beyond U.S. borders. Get your gear and get ready to boost." * * * * * OOC Your weekly allowance of elite loot is in the Skyranger, along with gas masks for the entire team.

Vasily rubs his gloved hands together in the chill cabin of the Skyranger, his military greatcoat wrapped around him and a woolen hat pulled down to his ears. Looking around, he thinks back to the question he asked at the briefing not an hour ago. *** "What did coded message say? Just... 'help, aliens'? Any idea who send?"

Sweat dripped off Jim's brow. This was the first time he'd been involved in an actual autopsy of the alien "sectoid", as Mr. White and the rest of the medical team had been calling it. The autopsy itself was fascinating. The internal organs seemed simple, almost as if they'd been designed. There was no obvious reproductive apparatus. The digestive system seemed tuned to one simple form of nutrient. One thing was clear - these were scary-looking little buggers. Jim was glad this one was dead.
