Her job was to keep him happy and to make sure things ran smoothly. --------------------------------------- EDIT: ooc: the idea was not to get too involved to the point of meddling, just a little, if there was something that could be done to smooth something over.

Catalina waved a hand to stop Jane emailing again. "Hold on a moment, the big fella has a point." If we research the laser cannons we can't build them either. From Dr W's list it looks like there are two lots of information we can research." She points at the lines reading Sectoid Prisoner and Alien Navigation. "I think Vas means to scrap technology research altogether and look at those. I missed it before but if those are two separate areas of research I agree with him." "Of course taking manpower off Dr S would be like kicking a puppy, so maybe we should leave him his token." She grinned a little again. "Not counting Jane playing go fetch of course. So if those are separate areas I say plough 90% of the capacity of one lab into dealing with the prisoner, 90% of the other into looking over the navigation systems of the ships, and leave Dr S the flunkies he currently has. Get the job done on the research and see what intelligence it gives us, and hope Dr S gets a prototype up and running with the research." ((OOC - read that HWP (2), Sectoid Prisoner (9), Alien Navigation (9) On the skill rolls and assisting note, SA's comment is precisely why I've stayed away. Not sure but it looked to be that if the roll goes under a ten we'd be slowing them down. Unless you counted being able to disable the electronic circuitry in in locks and traps as being useful in constructing electronics (a bit thin ), she's nothing above a 3. From my, albeit possibly flawed guess, on needing a 10 that's a 40% chance of getting under their feet (and it's perfectly possible to do that while making coffee ) rather than helping. With my luck on rolls that's a big risk. So unless LB says my logic is flawed, Catalina will continue to exercise and/or polish her nails between missions!)

Jane commented, "Okay then, let's ask them how many researchers they need per project to complete the 4 research projects and then we can decide for ourselves which priorities we should set. Sound fair?" ooc: ie could we get estimates, even ballpark figures would do.

Shrugging lightly Catalina replied, "Certainly, if it helps. I just think that we should give priority to communication with the prisoners, and learn what we can from their navigation, as soon as possible. If that means turning the whole of a lab over to get it done in a week then we do exactly that. If there are any leftover boffins we can put them onto Dr S's pet or the laser research." "Without the capacity to construct technology time spent researching it at the expense of other projects is effectively time wasted. Time we don't have." Catalina grinned at Buzz. "Who knows? Something in the navigation system might let our beloved techie know where the Sectoids come from." Then she waggled her eyebrows at Dr Baron. "Plus something in the language might give Dr B a tool to use with a little more finesse than a chainsaw."

Unfortunately the researchers cannot give exact times needed to complete their projects (there is a small random factor involved). More scientists assigned to a project will yield faster results. Both schools of thought have merit; working on more projects at once means that you may have a quicker access to things that can suddenly become desperately needed in the course of play. But focusing on a few projects may mean faster access to important developments. At the moment I'm seeing 2-1 in favor of Smart Alec's distribution, so we'll go with that for now (Prisoner 9, Navigation 9, HWP 2). I won't be here tomorrow to post Dr. Wagner's "research summary" message, but assume it reflects the discussion above. Regarding skill rolls, the DCs for affecting progress are DC15 (small benefit), 20 (moderate benefit), and 25 (large benefit). Failing by >=5 is a failure (small negative impact) while >=10 will have a more significant negative impact. Rolling a 1 is generally pretty bad, but probably pretty funny for everyone else. Jenniza: If Jane wants to take a more supporting/facilitating role with regards to the HWP project, you should post a charisma-based skill (such as Persuasion) that you think would be most applicable to the situation. I'll be back Saturday.

Jane conceded their points, "The Laser Cannon research project is a more advanced project anyway, and probably would require a lot of resources. Let's get our immediate ones out of the way with the Sectoid Prisoners and Alien Navigation studied; those would probably together help us understand the Sectoid Language better. We can spare Dr. Sandesh and his collesgue, like before to work on the Heavy Weapons Platform. You've made your points, Catalina and Vasily. Good job. We ready to send the message now?" Jane makes the necessary changes to agree with those changes.

OOC: Heh, Independence Day too owes a little, I'm sure, to other older stories. (War of the Worlds comes to mind; in WotW it's a biolgical virus, in ID4 it's an electronic one...)

Doctor Baron pulled at his collar as he apporached Dr. Ama Ngunyi. "Excuse me Doctor Ngunyi, I heard you might be involved with studying the Sectoid language. I wanted to offer my services in this research," said Doctor Baron. "If possible perhaps we can go over the language together. I might be able to help when you attempt to speak to our live alien with their own language. Be able to identify their body language so to speak to see how they are taking the words," said Doctor Baron. Admittedly it was a lot easier to read a human's body language for Doctor Baron. But he was more than willing to attempt to read a alien's body language as well.

Jim listened to the exchange betweeen Jane, Cataline and Vas with interest. "I almost hate to admit it, but the big guy has a point. I'd support those research and manufacturing allocations as well. We could really use more manufacturing capability. Listen, unless you guys need any other input from me, I'm going to head over to the medical area." Jim walked on down to the medical lab. The damned alien physiology and medical technology were just so fascinating! There were lots of potential applications of this technology to improvements in medical treatment - if humanity and XCom survived the alien invasion, medical treatment and lifespans were likely to see a significant revolution for those who could afford the new medicines and medical technology that was going to follow! ooc: Jim continues to apply his "craft pharma" skill to any potential medkit improvements - I understand we may need to make progress on the "alien research" item before this will allow additional medkit improvements.

Whether it be verbal, or gestures or energy discharges of any sort on any spectrum? Light, sound, smell, chemical, etc"

Crime Scene Investigation Case: Heavy Weapons Project Prototype Malfunction Subject Interview: Jane Swift, Field Agent, Alpha Team X-COM Subject reports to have been an assistant to Dr. Sandesh that week and having been trying to keep the project going with at least minimal staffing. When pressed about the funding issue, Agent Swift finally disclosed that the discussions about the funding were not always unanimous; but, would not elaborate further. The subject seemed to bother her a bit. The actual event of the Heavy Weapons Platform Malfunction, she describes as they were called in as a unit to respond to an emergency and briefed. She told them what she knew of the unit: that it was armed with a small caliber short-range cannon.. The researchers claimed that it was disarmed; but, when they entered, it was firing on those that entered the room: primarily: Agent De Farrago who was attempting to sneak up behind it to deactivate it; Agent Swift, armed with a Stun Rod; Agent Karsprjak, armed with a Stun Rod as well; the others followed behind. Dead on the floor was Billups Gordon. Huddled in the back were: Doctor Okwelume & Doctor Fadil Sandesh as well as a Field Medic, she believes. Near the center of the room was the Heavy Weapons Project Prototype firing about at whoever was the closest target. According to Agent Swift, Agent De Farrago would not have been able to work without being attacked; so, Agents Karsprjak and Swift kept it distracted while Agent De Farrago attempted to work. It kept shooting at people nearby and it was still a danger. Agent De Farrago was unable to find an opportunity to disable it, so Agent Swift made the call to disable it. Agent Swift overheard Agent Olloff at the controls reviewing them, describing what sounded like a possible saboteur. His later theories also sounded interesting; but, Agent Swift didn’t seem to understand the details of them.

Jane finds time alone in the gun range to practice and fires round after round at the targets until they are taken about and obliterated by the ammunition pumped into them. She then sets up new targets and begins anew and repeats the process. The steady pace of the ammunition begins to form an inner peace for Jane and gives her a chance to think quietly to herself. She continues this for awhile until the near state of Nirvanna is broken by one of the Betas asking for a turn. It was the TV star, of course. Jane smiled at her, "Go right ahead, at least these don't shoot back at you with intent to kill you," and Jane walked off.

FROM: Jane Swift, X-COM Field Agent TO: Michael Garret, X-COM UN Liaison RE: Mission Report – Florida Everglades We were sent to investigate “UFO1” in a recent dual incursion into the United States. UFO1 was downed by Interceptor-1 and we were sent to investigate the area. Besides several “maddened wild boars” and leeches and snakes, we first encountered some debris. It was a bit acidic at first; but, after it was cleared, there was a heavy object that we stored on the Skyranger for later study at HQX. We managed to stun one unusual alien of a type that is possibly the originator of the cloned Sectoid species we’ve been fighting all along. Inside the damaged ship was another of these creatures that we were forced to kill. The exterior of the ship seemed different; but, the interior seemed very similar only larger to account for their larger bodies. This presents us with some extraordinary avenues to research. The new alien we captured may provide great clues not dreamed of before. We headed back to defend the Skyranger from another of those “maddened wild boars” possibly infected by the contamination of the debris field in the eco-system. That is a concern we need to consider during the clean-up, as it could spread quickly.
