Jane worked with Musa and the kitchen staff to arrange for Yoav's dietary needs, including a few foods from back home that he might appreciate like fish colbasa, etc.

RE: Mission Report – Northern Wisconsin farm

Yet another large UFO with five Snakemen outside, several inside. The differences this time were: 1) we had a new team member, Dr. Yoav Yeren; 2) I spent most of my time babysitting the HWP (not a very effective use of my abilities as it nearly got me killed); 3) Dr. Allen was back with us and very effective at patching us up, especially when two members dropped; 4) we learned to use the tear gas grenades effectively against the Snakemen (inside and outside their ship); 5) this time, the Snakemen were successful in launching the ship into the air to some degree (Dr. Yeren saved us by getting the ship down safely).

Scene: Dr. Beauvais’s Office

Jane knocked on Dr. Beauvais’s door and Dr. Beauvais answered, “Please come in.”

As they sat down, Jane asked, “How are you, Dr. Beauvais?”

The counselor replied, “I’m well, thank you. How are you, Jane?”

Jane considered the question carefully, “To be honest, I’m not sure. I’ve not heard from my brother’s family in a week since they were moved; I nearly crashed the ship we were on, on the last mission; we just uncovered a traitor in our midst and to be honest I suspected him all along, but for the wrong reasons, so I didn’t want to speak up, because they were unfounded reasons. So where do you want to start?”

The counselor asked, “So let me guess, ‘The butler did it?’ scenario, so you didn’t speak up?”

Jane smiled, “Exactly. Somehow his name came up right next to Sandesh on the suspect list and Sandesh was out, so he was next on the list. It was like jumping to conclusions without anything to base it on. I kept shaking off the feeling; but, it kept coming back to him. I’d hate to persecute a man based on nothing. Now the point is moot. It’s like the feeling I had with the Riverside Elementary School. I somehow knew the aliens were there to take the children to metamorph them into more of their hybrids; but, I simply could not say the words to my teammates or the medical staff back here. It was not until later when faced with the awful truth of the matter that I said anything. My indecision to say anything may be setting matters back.”

The counselor corrected her, “Or it may be exercising self-control from going on wild-goose chases too. You can’t be second guessing yourself all the time, Jane. It will lead to bad mistakes in the field and here.”

Jane conceded the point, “I suppose you’re right, Dr. Beauvais.”

The counselor added, “Learn to trust yourself; but, also learn to trust your caution, so you don’t make worse mistakes.”

Jane smiled, “You’re right, of course. I suppose I should kicking myself too. I’ll learn to fly better soon too. Not like I’m expected to know how to fly an out-of-control alien ship on my first try.” She grinned mischievously, “I’ll try learning for next time.” She paused awhile and sighed, “I hope I hear from my family soon.”

The counselor replied, “I’m sure they’ll contact you when it’s safe and they are settled.”

Jane asked, “Have you heard anything?”

The counselor answered, “No, but, if I do, I’ll let you know. I promise.”

Jane smiled… reassured, “Thank you, Dr. Beauvais. See you next week?”

The counselor replied, “Will do, ‘til then.”

Dr. Wagner's weekly e-mail.

FROM: DR. KIMBERLY WAGNER, X-COM RESEARCH LEAD
TO: MEMBERS, ALPHA TEAM
CC: MICHAEL GARRET, GRACE THELON BELUCA
RE: New Research/Manufacturing Priorities

We have several completed projects to report. The new Medical Lab is complete and all systems are online. Doctor White reports that weekly production of medikits will approximately double as a result.

Work on the alien power supply has proceeded well, despite the loss of the project lead, Doctor Okwelume. Doctor Okwelume left detailed notes on his organization of the work, and the use of the alien power coupling that you recovered from the Everglades mission has greatly speeded the work. The research team has already submitted a preliminary report on the alien fuel source. It is a new element, which they are calling Elerium-115.

The team estimates that at current staffing levels they should finish their work on the alien power systems by the end of the week. Chief Engineer Beluca has stated that once this project is complete, X-COM will be able to use the complete materials, power, and navigation plans to construct our own advanced craft based on alien techniques and technologies. She has also indicated that the alien power systems may eventually allow for the construction of more advanced Powered Armor for our X-COM field operatives.

To summarize, here are our current priorities:

Research Priorities (20 points available)
  • Laser Weapons: Research complete. Laser pistols may be constructed.
  • Laser Rifle: Research complete.
  • Laser Cannon: Project begun but currently inactive. The Laser Cannon is a ship-portable weapon with superior range and firepower. This technology will allow our interceptors to go toe-to-toe with the larger alien craft. This advance will also allow us to construct a Laser Tank that can accompany X-COM teams in the field. Successful research of the Laser Cannon will allow us to research Laser Defense for X-COM bases.
  • Motion Scanner: Research complete.
  • Heavy Weapons Platforms: Research complete. Later upgrades include the Laser Tank, and theoretically, a Plasma Tank based on advanced alien technology.
  • Alien Medicine: Research complete. The new Medical Lab will produce eight medikits per week. He reports that when the lab is involved in research projects, such as alien autopsies, the rate of production will slow. Further upgrades may come from research into alien life forms.
  • Alien Alloys: Research complete. Personal Armor is now available for manufacture.
  • Plasma Pistol: An alien weapon. We have retained two of these weapons for research purposes.
  • Plasma Rifle: A more powerful alien weapon.
  • Sectoid Prisoner: Research complete.
  • Alien Navigation: Research complete.
  • Alien Power Supply (10): Project currently underway. We have discovered that the alien power systems utilize a new element, Elerium-115. Once this research is complete, will will be able to use this technology to construct advanced flying craft, and to research alien weapons technology.
  • Sectoid Autopsy: Research complete.
  • Snakeman Autopsy: Research complete. It is clear now that the alien menace is not limited to one species.
  • Floater Autopsy: Research complete.

Current Prisoners held in Alien Containment:
  • Snakeman Soldier: We have several of these aliens in captivity. Once research is complete they will be sent to a central holding facility off-site.
  • Floater Navigator: Initial interactions with the captives taken in Riverside reveals that the creatures have an alien intelligence. Little that is human remains, save for some mannerisms observed by Doctor Baron.
  • Floater Soldier.

Manufacturing Priorities (30 points)
  • Research Capacity: Research Lab 2 is fully operational. Further expansions will run into problems due to base size limitations.
  • Medical Capacity: the Medical Lab is fully operational.
  • Manufacturing Capacity: Workshop 3 is fully operational. Further expansions will run into problems due to base size limitations.
  • Base Defense: Missile Defense has been completed. Chief Thelon has noted the technical feasibility of creating a laser defense system, once our research into laser weapons technology is sufficiently advanced.
  • Laser Pistol (5): Four units have been constructed.
  • Laser Rifle (5): One unit partially constructed.
  • Motion Sensor: Two units have been constructed.
  • Personal Armor (10): Three suits has been constructed. Helmets have been upgraded to resist mental attacks.
  • Medikit: Current level: Advanced Medikit 1. Doctor White's medical lab can construct eight of these kits each week without compromising our manufacturing capacity. If you wish to dedicate additional resources to the project, the kits can be produced at a faster rate.
  • Heavy Weapons Platform: Rocket Launcher: One prototype (damaged) produced. Once the Laser Cannon is complete, Laser Tanks can be constructed.

Your current allocations are listed in parens above. Note that I've added a bit more specificity on some of the items above, including the prisoners in Alien Containment.

I did not notice whether any of you had found an Alien Grenade and placed it in storage. If you did, let me know and I'll add it to the research list. I think that the aliens may have used all of the ones that they had in their possession last time.

Lessons in Multitasking

So far, it had been ten minutes of ham fritters, coffee and antarctic adventure stories in the X-Com cafeteria. Vasily wasn't sure how anyone could talk about Antarctica for ten minutes without mentioning penguins once, but that was because they weren't actually talking about Antarctica; they were talking about Alyssa Sanders. Or, rather, Alyssa Sanders was talking about Alyssa Sanders. As he'd never been to Antarctica, there wasn't much else to do but make the occasional intrigued noise.

So when the little vibrating buzz sounded from the xPhone sitting there near his plate, he couldn't help but glance down and skim-read the contents.

"... so what I had to do is dig the ice shelter and make the walls with just this trowel I'd made from - are you listening?"

"Eh?" He looked up, and blinked a bit, coming back to Earth. "Oh. Sorry, is the email from Wagner."

That admission earned him a carefully-modulated look of disappointment. "And what Doctor Kimmy's got to say is more interesting, huh?"

"What? No, no. I just looking -"

"Give it here," Alyssa demanded, motioning for the xPhone. Her eyes flicked across the screen, and a minute or two of expert tapping produced a message.

RE: New Research/Manufacturing Priorities

Get cracking on that alien energy, finish up that laser cannon, build more armor, build more laser weapons, build more medical packs, and send some to Beta Team! They need some alien science love too.

She held the phone in front of his eyes. "There. That do?"

"Uh -"

"Good." He tentatively reached for the phone, but winced as she tapped the SEND button before handing it back, apparently unfazed. "By the way, you really need a more interesting user name than that. How about we go shoot something? I can tell you the rest of the story on the way."

In the privacy of his own head, he sighed a little. It wasn't exactly an ideal date. But as the only topics he could think of to talk about were murderous aliens, the possible double-dealing of the People's Republic of China and the worry that his own nation was involved somewhere - after all, hadn't they all signed the Treaty of Good-Neighbourliness and Friendly Co-operation? - maybe an hour or two of shooting some target dummies and listening to more survival adventures in freezing climes wasn't so bad.

"Sure. Ok." They got up, and Vasily slid the xPhone back into his pocket. What the other team members would make of that mail, he wasn't sure...

((OOC EDIT: No grenades found so far.))

Alien love

It had been a busy week. Research had tied Catalina up completely, and been oddly rewarding in it's reception. The open gratitude of Hallorand and Garrett, both of whom had been relieved to have the matter closed so swiftly and with Dr Okwelume still alive. The sincere, if somewhat saddened, congratulations of base staff, and the enthusiastic ones of some of her own team. But more than any of these, the obviously bitter taste if left in Drake's mouth as she was forced to acknowledge it.

And now what? Sitting in the usual "feet up on table" position in the Recreation room, listening to the chatter of those around her, Catalina had to admit she was bored. What had seemed a fine way to occupy herself the week before now seemed just a little empty. She glanced down as the xPhone buzzed and pulled it out to look. A mischievous grin came across her face. It merely broadened as Vasily and Alyssa walked through the room on the way to the firing range. She wiggled the phone at him and her eyes danced. Well this should keep me occupied for a few minutes at least.

With a smirk on her face, Catalina sat and composed a response to the resourcing email.

RE: New Research/Manufacturing Priorities

I'm sure we all fully support Vasily in his desire to give alien science love to the Beta Team members. Focusing on the priorities in his email will no doubt produce the appropriate equipment to reinforce this cause to the full. Some Beta Team members have already expressed a desire to receive it and no doubt they will step forward quickly to take up the opportunity. I therefore throw my own opinion behind his suggestions and hope they achieve the desired result.

She pressed the send button with a flourish and while waiting for any potential response typed another.

RE: Any chance of something special?

Got to try out the new armour in the field, Grace, and it works a treat. Of course, being me I have to ask for a something little extra. Is there anyway you can work the camouflage you had on my old XCOM uniform into the new materials? It was damn useful when checking out the lay of the land around the aliens.

I know it's a long shot, but thought I would ask, as if you don't ask you generally don't get!

Cat

No response to the first. Catalina glanced at the entrance to the barrack room corridor with another grin. Maybe he'll want to give it in person.

score card:

    Research Priorities (20) :
  • Laser research completed: Laser Weapons, Laser Pistols, Laser Rifles
  • Laser Cannons (10) – (w/ HWP tech, possible to research Laser Tank)
  • Lasers TBC: Laser Defense
  • Motion Scanner: Completed
  • Heavy Weapon Platform: Completed, (upgrades include: Laser Tank & Plasma Tank)
  • Alien Handguns (to be researched)
  • Alien Rifle (to be researched)
  • Alien Power Supply (10) (Electrum-115, in research)
  • Alien Navigation: Completed (plus alien power coupling device)
  • Alien Alloys: Completed
  • (theoretically, we have the early components needed to make an advanced ship design)
  • Alien Medicine: Completed
  • Autopsies completed: Sectoid, Snakeman, Floater
  • Prisoner research completed: Sectoid
  • Prisoner research TBC: Snakeman, Floater

    Manufacturing Priorities (30) :
  • Manufacturing Labs: 3
  • Research Labs: 2
  • Medical Labs: 1 (will naturally produce more Medikits by +50% per Med Lab)
  • Defense: Missiles, Soon: Lasers
  • Laser Pistols: 4 (5), Soon: 5
  • Laser Rifles: 0 (5), Soon: 1
  • Laser Cannons: Soon: Available
  • Motion Scanners: 2
  • Personal Armor: 3 (10), Soon: More
  • Medikit: Medical group producing them, it’s possible to manufacture more

so, I'd like us to consider that we'll be getting more Medikits anyway from out new Med Lab, and that we can use the remaining Manufacturing Lab for either 20 points of Personal Armor or 10 points of Research Lab building (where Vasily and Jane do the combined building again... then we'll have 30 points of research for Yoav to go to town for all the advanced research projects down the road that we keep getting backed up on).

Also, to consider that laser tech vs Snakemen might be lower priority for the moment given they are relatively immune to fire.

RE: New Research/Manufacturing Priorities

While I don't disagree with Vasily on the Laser Canoon and Alien Power Supply, since that is what we previously agreed on, I differ on my opinions with him on the manufacturing priorities. I'd like us consider several options:
- armor, laser rifle & pistol, research lab
- 2 armor, research lab
- 1 armor, double duty on the research lab
- 3 armor

The Research Lab would go a long way towards future research projects that we have had backed up a long time now.

Personal Armor would cut down on the need for overuse of Medikits.

Laser Weapons are not as effective against Snakemen.

Medikits are being produced more by the new Medical Lab.

I'd go with second or third option as the best choice; but, the others as just as good.

If we went with 30 points of armor (producing 3 sets of armor, enough for the rest of the team, Jane could concentrate all efforts on improving the armor theoretically... however we'd be betting it all on one set of rolls of Jane's +11 craft mech skill, +12 move silently, +14 hide along with Catalina's skill rolls) It's an awful lot to bank it on.

((OOC - Just to clarify, my post on using skills was intended to add an additional element to one new set of armour. IC this would be interpreted as Cat having stealth added to hers and a normal new one being made. If it's successful maybe other stealthy suits can be made, but I stand by the decision in the earlier IC post re-manufacturing just one this week.

It may not be worthwhile getting three suits of armour made yet, as not every team member has Light Armour Proficiency so not everyone can wear one yet, and making a stealth set (if you allow it of course, LB!) would free up the suit Cat is wearing. Staggering production and only making one set a week gives those team members without Light Armour Proficiency the time to hopefully level up, and it's also worth bearing in mind that we may get access to Powered Armour at some point, and some team members will want to upgrade.

Edit: And it was an unexpected pleasure GW! So much fun I did it twice. ))

An unexpected message from Garret arrives in your xPhone inbox.

TO: ALPHA TEAM MEMBERS
FROM: Michael Garret
RE: Leave

I'm authorizing 72 hour leaves for members of Alpha Team. Leaves will be staggered so that at least two-thirds of the team is present at any given time. Beta Team will be on standby during the entire period that Alpha members are off-base. You will be expected to keep your xPhones on standby while off-site, including the GPS locator system. Violation will result in immediate revocation of leave privileges.

Another e-mail from Dr. Wagner

TO: ALPHA TEAM MEMBERS
FROM: DR. KIMBERLY WAGNER, X-COM RESEARCH LEAD
CC: MICHAEL GARRET, GRACE BELUCA
RE: Manufacturing

I got your e-mails regarding manufacturing priorities and have spoken to Grace about our options. She says that Workshop 2 has built up enough raw materials and expertise on the Personal Armor line that she is confident that two suits can be produced this week with the 10 engineers currently assigned to the project (though she says that she certainly won't turn away Jane's help!). In terms of improvements to the armor, Grace reports that she'll work on the stealth modification proposed by Operative De Farrago, but that improvements to the effectiveness of the armor itself will likely be superseded by the planned Powered Armor project.

ooc This is a one-time bonus (saved up "credits" from previous weeks on the armor production) rather than a permanent boost.

And one last message:

FROM: GRACE BELUCA
TO: Cat.LeaveYourHatOn
RE: Any chance of something special?

Report to Workshop 3, and we'll see what we can do. -GTB

ooc: i'd like to push for the 2 suits then (10 engineers) and I suppose finish the laser rifle (5?) & laser pistol (5?) (might as well get them out of the way), and begin work on the research lab (10). Catalina will swap her suit out. most people will be level 6 or so and won't qualify for another main feat selection (such as light armor or exotic weapons/heavy weapons if they didn't pick it by level 6) til level 9. it'll all work out.

Jane will help with the armor, I suppose.

Jane reports to Grace to ask what the latest developments are with the armor and offers to pitch in with the aditional suits. Jane points out whatever vulnerabilities to gunshots, particularly the plasma shots, that she can. Additionally, there is the matter of flexibility of movement... perhaps something could be done there.

ooc: craft mechanic +11 skill
gunslinger class, level 2,
BAB 6 w/ small arms,
7 w/ heavy weapons
11 w/ Jane's sniper rifle
(the reason for mentioning that is to show Jane's expertese in being able to pinpoint vulnerable spots on armor points)

tumble +10
(the reason for mentioning that is to possibly boost something (maybe either tumble skill or Spring Attack feat or something) for her suit of armor possibly or the others)

I thought new adition to base would take weeks because we need new plumbing and generator and wiring and barraks and all that? Thought we going to wait and build new lab at X-Com Europa instead.

How this whole new base thing work Grace? Will new laser defence idea need new base generator and rest of it too?
