Vasily watches the door of the briefing room as Alyssa leaves, and for a few moments after she's gone. At Catalina's question, though, he turns to the group.

"From sound of it, plasma all we got," he says, looking grim at the thought of such monstrosities awaiting them. "Stay low. Especially you wearing the light stuff. And aim for the head."

OOC: Another medic was only a half-serious suggestion, I admit! But if that's what you want to play, Bob, then that's fine.

Jane took a deep breath as the last of the causalties were taken away. With Catalina's question, Jane replied, "As with always, we've noticed the best weapon now is plasma... pass the word around... Alpha and Beta, techs, interceptors, tanks, base defense, everything is switching over to Plasma from here on out... and as soon as we get Fusion weapons Plasma is a thing of the past... it's all-out Fusion weapon technology top-to-bottom. We match tech for tech or beat it."

Dr. James Allen

Jim was stunned by the news. His family was safe, sure, but he'd had lots of friends from Harvard Med School who'd practiced in New York or the suburbs around it. Bill Jenkins and Snehal Patel had both been at Westchester General Hospital, and Lisa Cresup had been at Manhatten Ear, Eye and Throat.

He cursed as he worked the com systems. Communications sucked, and he couldn't even contact his own family, let alone find out if one of his old friends in New York had somehow survived. About 300 million people were apparently doing the same thing, from places with a lot less security than this base.

After giving up on communications, he went back out to the alpha team lounge. Most of the rest of the alpha team looked to be thinking the same thing he was - those bastards are gonna pay.

ooc: Dr. Allen is alive and well, ready to put a badass load a healing on his doubtful teammates, oh they of little faith!

As to research priorities, I'd advocate a bit more in regen and medical, knowing I may be a bit late with my post this week - markets have been crazy. I'll support any regen/med research with craft pharma and profession skills, both are maxed out.

Mary Ranma

Mehwash "Mary" Ranma stared at the yellow piece of paper in her hand; still stunned by its bold print. By the hand-written signature of India's prime minister at the bottom.

YOU ARE ORDERED AT ONCE TO REPORT TO REPORT TO X-COM, CURRENTLY LOCATED IN THE US. THERE YOU WILL SERVE ON A TEAM OF MULTI-NATIONAL OPERATIVES. REPORT TO BASE CHIEF HALLORAND UPON ARRIVAL.

There was no room for compromise. No opportunity to complain, or even get more information. She returned to her dormitory after a night out with her friends in Pune. Some men from the army were waiting for her. Her things packed in a duffel. Her orders shoved into her hand. An hour later, she was on a plane to America.

Mahwesh wondered what would be told her parents. Her father would hate her even more, probably. How angry was he, when in the middle of her medical studies, she ran off to join the IMS. At the time she thought it was a good idea. It was either that, or she would be pressured to marry Vikram Singh. A fat bore of a man. It did not matter to her traditional parents that Mehwash was considered one of the highest scorers in the national Medical Aptitude exams. If she hadn't joined the army, her budding medical career would quickly be over.

At 24, she had seen much suffering. Severals years in the UN had taken her around the world. She wasn't yhet a doctor, but she had treated many patients. Nothing like the injuries and pain she was hearing about from The War though. She was afraid.

The Prime Minister's faith in her, she feared, was more than she had in herself.

RE: Mission Report – Miami, Florida

It should have just been another shooting gallery mission… but no… now they are using bio-terrorism and psychological warfare on us. Started off… they dropped some pods of aliens and the ships left… guess they were tired of us capturing their ships for scrap parts and supplies. So, then besides the Snakemen, there were other aliens that were rippers of sorts… okay, so we put Mary to work right away, I guess. No, the bad stuff came when we had to splatter infected humans left and right periodically during the mission. Catalina almost joined the ranks if it wasn’t due to some quick C-sections by Mary and Dr. Allen. This war is getting worse and worse. Although we have to fight to survive as the human race always does, both sides are going to get very bloody as this fight goes on, unless a peaceful solution ever becomes available. One day the aliens are going to see they are getting just as bloody as we are… we have to make them see that day come before the Earth gives up.

Jane visited Catalina in the Infirmary... coffee and snacks wouldn't be appropriate of course... maybe when Catalina is in the right mood, conscious, in decent shape, etc. she'd appreciate this gift... Jane offered Catalina the new bottle of Boots, No. 7 Shower Gel, "Just for you, when you feel better."

ooc: meant to give it to you in game; but time ran out.

[Subject: V. Kasprjak. Transcript begins.]

Yesterday. Not good day.

[Pause of 12 seconds.]

I hear about Alyssa. Sanders, that is, from Beta. I guess should have seen coming. Thought something wrong. Sveinn gone, then Perez shipped out, then... it like dominos, you know. Maybe all it take in Alpha is a few of us die and we all fall too, I think. I don't know.

[Pause of 4 seconds.]

Eleazar, I mean. I call him 'Perez', guess should not do by now. Did not really know him well. Did not really know any well. Not her either, maybe. Too late now, yah, I hear that one before.

[Pause of 21 seconds.]

When I first see her, I remember, I wonder about Beta Team... scientists, and tv star. Thought, 'they not strong enough'. Hah. I thought same of most of Alpha, too.

[Pause of 8 seconds.]

Not get me wrong, they strong. They prove that. They all go out there, do the job. They strong. Some have faith, some got confidence, some used to war... some just cold. Strong enough, though. I not sure about that.

[Pause of 6 seconds.]

I not sure any of us are.

[Pause of 28 seconds.]

What I see out there. Things, chewing way out of... bodies. Pulling monster out of... Worst thing I ever saw.

[Pause of 3 seconds.]

And I seen some bad things, you know? Done a few of them. Stuff that stay with you for a long while. But I don't think I ever forget this. Would have screamed, but... was either scream or shoot, and I need shoot. Stuff like that... need shooting.

[Pause of 7 seconds.]

Ethereal, bad enough. Losing mind in middle of combat, worrying. I shake it off, though, you know? Was... rage. So angry. Same with others... battleship, dead cities. Thought that maybe snapping point for... for some. But at least can can look at battleship and say, 'I hate'.

[Pause of 3 seconds.]

But this stuff? What can you be angry at? Dead body? Thing inside?

[Pause of 4 seconds.]

It just not work, somehow.

[Pause of 11 seconds.]

Things just keep coming. Stuff. Maybe we not seen the worst. Maybe Sveinn lucky one, in the end. Maybe Perez getting off easy.

[Pause of 6 seconds.]

And I starting to think, that not bad. I not blame. Maybe, good for them. Maybe Alyssa do the smart thing? Bullet in head... at least it leave no room for anything else.

[Pause of 22 seconds.]

I don't know. I don't know.

There's nothing like a stomach wound for showing you how important that area of the body is for movement, even the simple stuff like sitting up, but Catalina was finding out fast. Being in Medbay again was not attractive, so she was determined to get back on her feet and out of there quickly. It wasn't just that she'd spent too much time looking at the ceiling there recently, it was Eleazar Perez in the bed a short distance away.

Ame and Jurgen stopped by to talk to him often, but the man was dead inside. Catalina had heard her father talk of post traumatic stress disorder, but she'd never realised just how bad it could be. She wasn't even sure if Eleazar understood about Alyssa taking her own life, but she was certain seeing a friend literally torn apart would be sufficient cause on it's own.

The pain obvious in the two surviving members of Beta was enough to make her think, and oddly enough, Catalina felt a pang of jealousy. Comradeship, something close to the companionship she once had, was something she missed, badly. Alpha simply did not provide it. Some were, in short, new and Hadrian was utterly uncommunicative anyway, but even the initial team members didn't seem to know how to be mates.

Jane was nice but, well, that was the problem, she was nice. The scented shower scrub had been thoughtful, but they were too different and there was no meeting of minds. Catalina had told her to give the cosmetics to Ame, as there were some in greater need of her brand of thoughtfulness. James was if anything the opposite, he'd seem to care and then the next thing he'd say would make you think that the reason he cared was because you could stand between him and a bullet.

And Vasily? Sometimes he tried, the closest they'd got was Vegas when both drunk, but in truth she thought he couldn't let himself. Catalina had watched him push away the shock of Alyssa, so what did that say for the rest of them? For all they had been through there did not seem to be that bond in Alpha, all of them seemed to be islands. Buzz might have been a pal, but he was no longer around. Catalina was certain that none of the team would have felt like the Beta members if she'd not survived.

So yes, a trace of envy darkened the sympathy she felt, and it was too much to watch right now. Thanks to the miracles of the alien technology, she had made 6 weeks of recovery in less than 24 hours. She'd badger Stan into letting her go tomorrow to get away from the hollow feeling watching the remaining Beta members gave her. Besides, there was a mission to prepare for, and she planned to make someone, or something, pay.

Maybe she would try again. After all, they could be in Beta's position any time now, and who else did any of them have?

Skill rolls:

Catalina: Knowledge/Technology +9, motion sensor upgrade. Roll 18 (+9 = 27, moderate success, secondary skill). Result: Upgrade finished according to schedule, prototype released for field use.

Jane: Craft/Mechanical +14, Powered Armor improvements. Roll 14 (+14 = 28, complete success, primary skill). Result: Powered Armor Mark 2, 6 pounds lighter than Mark 1.

James: will contribute to next medical research project (need total skill modifiers).

If you guys decided to research the alien grenades, it's likely that someone with Demolitions skill could be useful. Just sayin'.

FROM: DR. KIMBERLY WAGNER, X-COM RESEARCH LEAD
TO: MEMBERS, ALPHA TEAM
CC: MICHAEL GARRET, GRACE THELON BELUCA, AGENT INISE DRAKE
RE: Research/Manufacturing Progress Report

The entire team is preparing for the alien base attack mission, but we still need to outline our ongoing research and manufacturing priorities.

We are evaluating the carcass of the creature you brought back from Miami. At the moment, we're calling it a "chryssalid." I don't have to tell you that this new alien race is extremely dangerous. We are putting a top priority on developing countermeasures for its implantation attack.

We have completed our preliminary study of the psionic alien prisoner, code named "Ethereal." The creature has an incredibly developed brain, but its abilities for independent thought are somewhat atrophied for a being of its potential intelligence. Still, they look to be leaders of sorts of the aliens, or at least lieutenants for some greater authority within the alien hierarchy.

Doctor White has submitted an audacious proposal, in conjunction with Counselor Beauvois and the Biological Sciences research team. He believes that X-COM can use the Ethereal leader and the data we've collected from it to build a Psi-Lab on site that would allow us to train our operatives in psionic warfare. While the immediate benefits would be to improve our mental defenses against the alien psi attacks, White and Beauvois have suggested that eventually, X-COM agents might be able to access the latent psi talents that all human beings possess, to some degree. While some of these theories reek more of science fiction than what we understand as real science, we are forced to give them credence by the simple fact of what the aliens have shown us is possible. Constructing the Psi-Lab will require a full research team in addition to an estimated 60 engineer-weeks of manufacturing resources.

We have completed a working prototype of the Improved Motion Sensor. Additional units may be constructed if necessary.

Research Priorities (36 points total):

Completed Research:

  • Laser Weapons: Research complete. Laser pistols may be constructed.
  • Laser Rifle: Research complete.
  • Laser Cannon: Research complete. Laser Defense may be constructed.
  • Plasma Cannon: Research complete. All future interceptors will be equipped with this weapon. Plasma Defense may be constructed.
  • Motion Scanner: Research complete. Improved Motion Sensor has been completed.
  • Heavy Weapons Platforms: Research complete. Laser Tanks may be constructed. Plasma Tanks may be constructed.
  • Alien Medicine: Research complete. The new Medical Lab will produce at least twelve medikits per week. Dr. White reports that when the lab is involved in research projects, such as alien autopsies, the rate of production will slow. Further upgrades may come from research into alien life forms.
  • Elerium-powered Biogenesis Unit: Project complete. Increases Medikit output by 50% or more.
  • Alien Alloys: Research complete. Personal Armor is now available for manufacture.
  • Powered Armor: Research complete. Helmets have been upgraded to provide resistance from alien psionic attacks.
  • Elerium-115 Reactor: Project complete.
  • Plasma Pistol: Research complete.
  • Plasma Rifle: Research complete.
  • Sectoid Prisoner: Research complete.
  • Snakeman Soldier: Research complete.
  • Floater Navigator: Research complete.
  • Snakeman Navigator: Research complete.
  • Snakeman Leader: Research complete.
  • Ethereal Leader: Research complete. Psionic research tree opened.
  • Alien Navigation: Research complete.
  • Alien Power Supply: Research complete.
  • Sectoid Autopsy: Research complete.
  • Snakeman Autopsy: Research complete.
  • Floater Autopsy: Research complete.
  • Reaper Autopsy: Research complete.

Current Projects:
  • None at this time.

Available Projects:

  • Heavy Plasma: A massive alien plasma weapon. (ooc: requires the Exotic Firearms Proficiency feat to use).
  • Small Launcher: An alien stun weapon.
  • Vibroblade: An alien melee weapon.
  • Alien Grenade: These explosives seem to be based on a biochemical agent combined with a tiny amount of Elerium-115.
  • Advanced Medikit 2: Improves efficiency of current medikits.
  • Regenerative Serum 1: Based on data taken from the Russian base, these serums temporarily grant field agents regenerative abilities, but with mild to moderate side effects. Future upgrades may be possible.
  • Psi-Lab: We can now build an adjunct to the Medical Lab that will allow us to explore psi-talent. This lab will enable us to improve our defenses against the alien mental attacks, and may even eventually allow some of our agents to develop any nascent psionic abilities that they may possess.
  • Chryssalid Autopsy.

Current Prisoners held in Alien Containment:

  • Snakeman Engineer.
  • Floater Soldier.
  • Sectoid Engineer.
  • Ethereal Leader.

Manufacturing Priorities (36 points)

  • Research Capacity: Research Labs 1-3 are fully operational.
  • Medical Capacity: the Medical Lab is fully operational.
  • Manufacturing Capacity: Workshops 1-3 are fully operational. HQX's research and manufacturing capacity cannot be expanded further, but additional infrastructure improvements may be possible at a later date.
  • Base Defense (20): Missile Defense and Laser Defense have been completed. Plasma Defense may be constructed. Current base defense factor: 40
  • Laser Pistol: Nine units have been constructed. Units may be constructed with an integrated VDU targeting system (+3 engineer-weeks per unit).
  • Laser Rifle: One unit has been constructed.
  • Motion Sensor: Two units have been constructed.
  • Personal Armor: Six suits have been constructed. Helmets have been upgraded to resist mental attacks. Units may be constructed with stealth augmentation (+4 engineer-weeks per unit)
  • Powered Armor (16): Four suits have been constructed. Armor has been upgraded to Mark 2, which is 20% lighter. A fifth suit has been begun and is approximately 50% complete.
  • Plasma Cells: Ammunition for the alien plasma weapons can be constructed, requiring Elerium-115.
  • Medikit: Current level: Advanced Medikit 1. Doctor White's medical lab can construct twelve of these kits each week without compromising our manufacturing capacity. If you wish to dedicate additional resources to the project, the kits can be produced at a faster rate.
  • Advanced Surgical Kit: An advanced field intervention kit that can stabilize and restore a dying soldier. (ooc: Raise Dead)
  • Heavy Weapons Platform: Two Laser Tanks produced. Plasma Tanks may be constructed. It takes 3 engineers one week to restore a seriously damaged HWP to full working order.
  • HWP Repair Kit: These repair kits can only be used on HWPs and require about twice the resources of a medikit to construct.
  • Psi-Lab: We can now build an adjunct to the Medical Lab that will allow us to explore psi-talent. This lab will enable us to improve our defenses against the alien mental attacks, and may even eventually allow some of our agents to develop any nascent psionic abilities that they may possess.

The Russian seems to think long and hard on this one. Eventually, after making some notes on a cafeteria napkin, he pipes up.

"What I about to say... may be wrong, may be right. Hear me out."

He lets that sink in, and continues. "We got big mission coming up. Anything we can get ready in time for mission is good. Long-term important, but if we screw up taking down base and battleship, we all be lot worse off. And by 'we'... I mean whole planet."

"So... weapons, armour... stuff like that. From sound of things, there this new alien type out there we not seen yet. Bullets not work. Three of those things pretty much wreck Beta Team, in more ways than one, and not even minigun did anything to stop them."

He clears his throat, awkwardly. "And we got that new suit of armour, half-built. I not sure if you want suit like that, Jones, but anything can help you survive out there... probably good. Seeing as we only operational field team right now, I see no reason why some cannot have two sets armour. Just keep one set in locker."

"There not seem to be any way we can build psi lab in two weeks without dropping lot of projects. So, may as well cram everything we can into next few days before big mission. And sure, maybe I being selfish; but if I going into fight like this, I want biggest gun I can get," he says, nodding towards the labs, where he'd deposited a second Heavy Plasma Gun a few hours ago, "and as many of them as possible - for this mission, if we get them fixed up, maybe we take both robot tanks this time."

"So I kind of agree with some things you say, Jane. But I think, maybe, push psi lab into next two weeks, and this week, get as much stuff as can help us and stuff out of way as we can. See what you think."

The Russian puts the napkin on the table, so the rest of the team can read it.

20 guys on heavy plasma
10 guys on vibroblade or grenade, what people think best
6 on cryssalid autopsy (Allen help?)

20 guys, plasma defence
6 guys, repair tanks
10 guys, finish new suit of powered armour mk 2 (if wanted?)
Any left over - new motion sensors/help out if plasma defence taking too long

EDIT, OOC: It's occurred to me (belatedly) that we might not have any of this stuff ready by the time the base assault comes around anyway. I thought I heard it said that we've only got a few days, or so , so anything we ask for now is setting the priorities for next-next week? Am I right? If so... back to the drawing board as far as this post and Vasily's reasoning is concerned.

EDIT EDIT: Or maybe we can have the teams all concentrate on one project at a time instead of three at once, in the hopes of getting one or two projects finished by the time we need to leave and do what's left while we're gone...

So if you want to do:
Research
Heavy Plasma (20)
Vibroblade (10)
Autopsy (6)

Manufacturing
Plasma Defense (20)
Plasma Tank (3+7) (repair + upgrade)
HWP Repair Kit (6)

OOC: But there's a second suit on the way:

Powered Armor (16): Four suits have been constructed. Armor has been upgraded to Mark 2, which is 20% lighter. A fifth suit has been begun and is approximately 50% complete.

Possibly something to do with us putting 16 points into armour manufacture last week, or maybe just Jane's manufacturing mad skillz. Would Hadrian wear that stuff, Karvon? Was thinking that some folks could have two sets of armour, one for regular missions and one for brutal indoor slugfest missions like this one's likely to be...

OOC:

I'd have to compare the properties before deciding whether to wear the heavier armor. What I looked at before didn't seem like a reasonable upgrade over what I already have.

As for heavy plasma weapons, unless you have heavy weapon proficiency - which I don't - you're not likely going to hit the side of a barn with them due to the -4 penalty.

ooc okay, count me in for heavy plasma weapon i'll have two plasma rifles to turn in for stipends. Bob, i think you have a spare plasma pistol that you can turn in as well to south wing quaratine area for stipend money later. That's how X-COM raises money. they take our excess, and besides passing it out amongst X-COM, they sell the rest to other appropriate agencies or some such.

PS, from what i saw of D20 Modern, they can't wear it if they don't have the medium armout profiency. I'm nearly positive of this as fact. unless they are taking this at 9th level and broaching the boundary soon, we should hold off on preparations for 12th level equipment. So, if they want to take this proficiency at 9th level, fine. If Lazybones wants to start handing out those severe penalty "badly-worn armon" rings so that people can wear that without the feats, that's his choice too... you'll hate the penalties.

Well, either you use it or Allen gets another suit to keep in storage. It's win-win. Give it another look, though - all I know is that our missions were a frightening world of bleeding people, 20+ damage attacks and smug aliens before the advent of powered armour...

And, as for Heavy/Exotic Firearms Proficiency - there's at least two folks on the team with that little gem, and yes, one of them's the Russian guy.

Clarifications:

1. Yes, there's another suit of Powered Armor (50% done) in addition to what Jane is wearing. There was some leftover manufacturing points and I gave a +2 bonus due to Jane's high skill roll. If you want an all-but-guaranteed finish (barring a very bad roll), put 6 men on it.

2. The X-COM teams are putting in a herculean effort in preparation of the base mission so you will get your full research/manufacturing output during this short week.

3. Personal Armor is 10 lbs, +6 AC, 0 Armor Penalty, DR 5 Acid (alien grenades), 5 Electric (Plasma), 5 Slashing (vibroblades), 5 Piercing (bullets). Powered Armor is 24 lbs (Mk2)/30 lbs (Mk1), +10 AC, -2 Armor Penalty, DR 10 Acid, 5 Bludgeoning, 10 Electric, 5 Slashing, 5 Piercing, 5 Positive (Note: plasma rifle and heavy plasma do this damage in addition to electric, that's how they get those insane damage numbers. So you're getting essentially 15 DR against those guns).

4. There is one more even better Heavy Armor coming, if you are planning feat selections for 12th level.

5. Armor nonproficiency rings are available for anyone who wants them. The penalty is -4 to DEX.
