"Oh brilliant job, thanks." Catalina smiled and picked up the torso plate of the armour. "Almost as good as new, too. You're a treasure Jarvis. I couldn't go out there looking less than my best now, could I? Would be totally unfair on the aliens." She gave the engineer a lop-sided smile. "I really owe you one, what with this and," her hand motioned awkwardly at his legs and chest, "with the accident and everything." "Ermm... well you know you could do something?" he mumbled. "Anything!" Catalina replied brightly, "Your wish is my command. Just say the word." "Ermm... well... uhm..." Jarvis looked a little embarrassed, "if you would like to eat dinner with me sometime? Not with the gang, just us, kind of," came the nervous request. Catalina blinked and grinned a little. "Of course," then the grin widened at the relieved expression on the engineer's face, "Tell you what, you can give me some pointers on how the diverting of plasma energy might be incorporated over dinner, and we'll see how far in debt to you that leaves me, eh?"

Jane continues working on the Psi-Lab construction throughout the week as the plans are drawn up by the researchers. She's intrigued by the design work put into it and tries her best to match their intentions and discuss any improvements with the design team to produce the best possible configuration possible from the ground up. There's plenty of field experience to draw from as well as lab experience to draw from... as many team members and technicians as possible put in time as temporary test subjects to give as much feedback as possible in he short time they have to spare... there's still plenty of other work that has to be done around the base and few personnel to spare. Whoever was available was appreciated. The construction time that Jane put in was coordinated with the other projects as needed... much work needed to be done this week. ooc craft mech +15

In an apartment in Pune, India, a woman picked up a ringing phone. "Hello Mommy,"she heard a soft voice say in Hindi. "It's Mahwesh. I'm calling from... well, I can't say where actually. I just wanted to let you know that I'm fine, and everything is alright." The voice on the other end of the line filled with emotion. "I miss you mommy. And father. And Vinod, and Mister Kittybear. Mom... I was wondering, if I can arrange some time off, can I come visit for awhile? I would really like that. Mommy...?" For a long moment the voice on the other end did not speak. Then with an excited tone, "Mommy? Are you there? Mommy? Are you there? It's me. Your daughter Mahwesh. Can you hear me? Can I come home" "I don't have a daughter," the woman said finally. She hung up the phone, and returned to her kitchen.

Mary Ranma had to admit, she was not the same woman she had been when she arrived at X-Com headquarters. In those two short weeks, she had done more, LIVED more, than she had in her previous 23 years. She had been flown around the world. Had been in combat. Worn high-tech armor. Fired powerful weaons at other living creatures; creatures from another WORLD bent on destroying the human race. Her life had become a high-budget American adventure movie, and SHE was Arnold! How had she come to this point? She had joined the service not to actually fight, but to have the freedom to persue her OWN chosen goals. TO be a doctor. But the Army, like her parents, had predetermined her destiny FOR her. Two weeks ago, she might have BEEN a doctor. Now she was a soldier. In every sense of the word. A soldier with a surgery kit. Why SHE was chosen by her government to serve in this capacity, and not somebody else, she had no clue. She realized she probably never would. Brushing her teeth, her mouth full of lathered toothpaste, she glared angrily at herself in a mirror in the women's bathroom. "Stop being a baby!" she said through the paste. Mary spat into the sink, and verbally admonished herself further. "You're so selfish! There's a real war going on! People are dying! THIS is what you need to do! THIS is where you were meant to BE..!" Suddenly, someone was standing next to her. Catalina, in a bathrobe. "Sometimes... when I'm alone," Mary sputtered, her cheeks getting dark, "I talk to myself out loud. Don't you ever do that...?" Catalina raised an eyebrow, then headed toward the showers. Mary finished brushing. QUIETLY.

After the alien defeat in Nevada, a wave of jubilation swept over the X-Com base. Everyone was excited, including Mary. For the first time, she wanted to be a part of it. Mary learned quickly that at X-Com, her colleagues on Alpha Team, actually had a say in where the teams resources were directed. One of the "perks", as they say in America. The others were very interested in the notion of assembling a Psi-Lab. She had to admit; the most frigtening part of last mission was when Jane had fired her weapon at Catalina. Catalina opened fire on her, and she had shot Jane. All three were controlled like puppets by an enemy weapon affecting their minds. But this was an area she knew nothing about, and couldn't envision how she might ever be able to help. A week ago, she had assisted in the autopsy of an alien. The 'cryssalid' that she killed. That creature had gestated in the stomach of Catalina, and when she removed it, had formed into a vicious killing machine. She blasted it with her plasma weapon. To date, THAT experience was the most horrific thing she had ever seen or done. A printout of Dr. Wagner's email in hand, Mary searched for a door in the X-Com complex. The one with 'Biological Sciences' painted on the door. OOC _ Mary would like to take part in the Chryssalid counter measure project. Walking past Mary to get ready, Catalina gave a friendly smile at the words. More than anyone would have been likely to receive for the last few days, and definately an improvement in her demeanour. "Me, I always talk to the most intelligent person available at the time," she said with a wink and then walked into the showers to begin to get ready for the 'date' with Jarvis. Dinner in the XCOM base was never going to be a private affair, a table away as far away from everyone else as possible was as intimate as could be managed. Catalina's increased interest in life showed itself in the decision to adapt the ever perfectly turned out appearance by choosing, for the first time, to present the thick black hair in a loose style. A little more genteel in her behaviour than normal, to anyone watching she still seemed to revel in the attention of the engineer Jarvis. Despite an initially nervous start, on his part at least, they gradually became more animated as the conversation developed. Eventually it turned to the incident of the last mission, with grimaces and shudders on her part and concerned frowns on his. "That's why I'm interested in any possible improvements to the armour," Catalina elaborated at the end of relating the facts. "From what I know, work is going to go ahead on the psi lab, or whatever it's called, but from what I understand it'll be a while before there are any results. Any improvements to shielding from mental assault will need to be developed by the new lab, and then incorporated into new equipment. In the meantime the risks still there." "It really isn't pleasant to not be able to control yourself, even without people who are supposed to be your comrades in arms taking pot shots at you." A distant look in showed in Catalina eyes, then she shook her head snapping out of it. "The armour I might, just might, be able to do something about. I can't see it ever being the same as the fancy stuff the others wear, but something to leech a little more of the energy burst out may help. That way if it does happen again I might last until they or I snap out of it." "So now you see why I'm interested in any tips or pointers you can give me on how that might be done." Catlina smiled brightly, "Right now, however, let's talk about something else." ((OOC - It's a million to one shot, but it might just work, so Catalina is looking to apply her Knowledge Tech skill ("What a surprise," I hear you say! ), +15 I think, to attempting to improve the resistance of the armour. Thinking of examining some form of meshing or wired connectivity between or over the armour parts to provide a way of channeling it to floor, to provide some form of earth leakage. If for this to succeed it interferes with the Hide bonus then so be it! Just can it stay black please. ))

Continuing (finishing?) the discussion from earlier... *** "Yah. I had one medkit. I use that too," Vasily noted. "Need resuscitation kit in case someone die... but if we cut down medkit manufacture, makes more likely someone will die. So I am thinking... we just get by and hope no-one die any time soon." "We got that, people? Yes?" Vasily stands there, hands clasped in his hair, teeth on edge - a little of all that internal tension showing itself. "Extra careful now." *** One last roundup! Research: - Chryssalid Countermeasures (10, plus Mary - Knowledge: Life Sciences 12) - Psi-Lab Research (10) - Small Launcher (10) - Floater Medic (6) - Light Armour Protection Upgrade (Catalina - Knowledge Technology 15) Manufacture: - Psi-Lab Construction (30, plus Jane - Craft Mechanical 15) - Resuscitation Unit (6) If anyone else wants to help out, last chance to say so!

OOC: Sgt Jones has no tech skills to speak of, just some minimal mechanical and repair skills, sufficient for typical grunt sort of minor field repairs to weapons or transport.

He begins to hammer his fist into his palm in time with the beat of his words. "You got to identify what you shoot at before you shoot it!" "And that goes for control panels too, Allen," he adds, frowning. "We killed everyone, what you think control panel going to do? Turn into robot and try kill us? You shot it like it was poisonous snake or something." He sighs. "May not get second chance, you know? Hadrian sat at a workbench in the workshop and slowly examined the heavy plasma rifle. Carefully he disassembled, studied and cleaned each component, then reassembled the rifle. He repeated the cycle of disassembling and reassembling the rifle gradually working on speed till he could do it quickly and more or less naturally. Next, he walked to the firing range and spent an hour or so adjusting the sights and getting a better feel for the weapon. Satisfied, he slung the rifle and made his way back to his quarters and stowed his gear. Crawling upon to his bunk he pulled out his pocket pc and pulled up the ebook he was reading.

FROM: Jane Swift, X-COM Field Agent TO: Michael Garret, X-COM UN Liaison RE: Mission Report – LA, California Floaters, Reapers, no ships, lots of civilians dead, a few cops saved, maybe even a soldier or two. Nearly lost Mary… luckily, we’re always making resuscitation kits in case one of us drops in combat. What a way to be welcomed to X-COM. I’ve heard the idle chatter going on and I’d like it to stop… I know first there was me, then Soheil, then Catalina and now Mary, not to mention Alyssa; but, I need the idle chatter going on here and there on the base about women serving on the front line not being the right place for them… well, I need to stop… it’s demoralizing for the rest of us. There’s so much else going on around here that’s bad about morale, we don’t need that too. Morale around here on every front is at an all-time low despite our successes. People practically hate each other at this point in some of the worst cases. Ooc: just RP about the male-female thing, not implying anything… I just found it funny and had to run with it. But some of the morale issues are legitimate… morale around the base has been bad IG and Jane needed to bring it up. Team vs Agent Drake; internal Alpha Team strife; missions have generally resulted in massive casualties directly or indirectly (ex: 3 cities w/ millions dead, various other cities w/ high casualties); etc. It’s all roleplay, I know; but, it’s still bad for morale from week to week.

Rolls: General construction 15 (no modifier) Catalina: Knowledge Technology +15, Improvement of Personal Armor. Roll 15 (+15 = 30, major success, secondary skill). Result: Development of Ablative Armor Shielding. This item (a belt) adds +5 Positive Energy resistance, at a cost of -1 Armor Penalty (applied to all physical skills). This item was designed specifically for Catalina's armor and cannot be transferred (although it may be manufactured for other users of Personal Armor). The X-COM Powered Armor already has this protection implemented. Jane: Craft Mechanical +15, Psi-Lab. Roll 12 (+15 = 27, complete success, primary skill). Result: +3 engineer/weeks bonus to construction. Mary: Knowledge Life Science +12, Chryssalid Countermeasure. Roll 4 (+12 = 16, minor success, primary skill). Result: +1 researcher/weeks bonus to project. James: Craft Pharma +19, Chryssalid Countermeasure. Roll 18 (+19 = 37, complete success, primary skill). Result: +3 researcher/weeks bonus to project, reduction of side effects of injection. * * * * * Dr. Wagner's weekly e-mail.
FROM: DR. KIMBERLY WAGNER, X-COM RESEARCH LEAD TO: MEMBERS, ALPHA TEAM CC: MICHAEL GARRET, GRACE THELON BELUCA, AGENT INISE DRAKE RE: Research/Manufacturing Progress Report We have completed our analysis of Agent De Ferrago's damaged xPhone. We were not able to recover all of the data downloaded from the Antarctica base computer, but we have learned that the source of the alien transmission was a base on Mars.
Our aerospace team has already begun work on a highly classified project: an advanced craft capable of space flight. We will share more information on this later, but suffice it to say that even the existence of this project, code-named AVENGER, is top-secret. The Biological Sciences research team reports that work is proceeding on the anti-Chryssalid countermeasure. With the help of Doctors Ranma and Allen, they have produced a prototype serum that kills and eventually dissolves the implanted alien embryo, but at the moment the side-effects are crippling. Work continues and we hope to have a viable field product by next week. Construction of the Psi-Lab has begun. Our research team has finished its blueprints and actual building has advanced ahead of schedule. Thanks are due to Jane for her help on getting the project started. If we continue at the same pace we should have the lab completed ahead of our projected timeline. We have completed work on the alien Stun Launcher. Grace has submitted her blueprints for the new Experimental Heavy Armor. This suit is cumbersome but it provides superior protection against almost all forms of attack. This would be a major project and Grace estimates at least 30 engineer/weeks to complete construction of a prototype suit. Research Priorities (36 points total): Completed Research:
- Laser Weapons: Research complete. Laser pistols may be constructed.
- Laser Rifle: Research complete.
- Laser Cannon: Research complete. Laser Defense may be constructed.
- Plasma Cannon: Research complete. All future interceptors will be equipped with this weapon. Plasma Defense may be constructed.
- Motion Scanner: Research complete. Improved Motion Sensor has been completed.
- Heavy Weapons Platforms: Research complete. Laser Tanks may be constructed. Plasma Tanks may be constructed.
- Alien Medicine: Research complete. The new Medical Lab will produce at least twelve medikits per week. Dr. White reports that when the lab is involved in research projects, such as alien autopsies, the rate of production will slow. Further upgrades may come from research into alien life forms.
- Elerium-powered Biogenesis Unit: Project complete. Increases Medikit output by 50% or more.
- Alien Alloys: Research complete. Personal Armor is now available for manufacture.
- Psi Lab: Research complete. Construction is underway.
- Powered Armor: Research complete. Helmets have been upgraded to provide resistance from alien psionic attacks.
- Elerium-115 Reactor: Project complete.
- Plasma Pistol: Research complete.
- Plasma Rifle: Research complete.
- Heavy Plasma: A massive alien plasma weapon. (ooc: requires the Exotic Firearms Proficiency feat to use).
- Vibroblade: An alien melee weapon. Research complete.
- Small Launcher: An alien stun weapon. Research complete.
- Sectoid Prisoner: Research complete.
- Snakeman Soldier: Research complete.
- Floater Navigator: Research complete.
- Snakeman Navigator: Research complete.
- Snakeman Leader: Research complete.
- Ethereal Leader: Research complete. Psionic research tree opened.
- Alien Navigation: Research complete.
- Alien Power Supply: Research complete.
- Sectoid Autopsy: Research complete.
- Snakeman Autopsy: Research complete.
- Floater Autopsy: Research complete.
- Reaper Autopsy: Research complete.
- Chryssalid Autopsy.
Current Projects:
- Chryssalid Countermeasure (10): Our Biological Sciences team has produced a serum and is now working on minimizing the side effects.
- Floater Medic (6): Interrogation is underway.
Available Projects:
- Alien Grenade: These explosives seem to be based on a biochemical agent combined with a tiny amount of Elerium-115.
- Advanced Medikit 3: Improves efficiency of current medikits.
- Regenerative Serum 1: Based on data taken from the Russian base, these serums temporarily grant field agents regenerative abilities, but with mild to moderate side effects. Future upgrades may be possible.
- Blaster Launcher: This devastating weapon launches guided blaster bombs that explode in an incredibly powerful fusion explosion. The blast radius is considerable, and friendly fire must be a consideration. This weapon cannot be reloaded and once discharged can be discarded. We cannot reproduce this weapon with our current technology.
Current Prisoners held in Alien Containment:
- Snakeman Engineer.
- Sectoid Engineer.
Note that we sent some of our prisoners on to the off-site secure containment facility, when preliminary interrogations indicated that they were not likely to have any useful information. At this point, the capture of alien Leaders and Commanders should be considered a top priority. Manufacturing Priorities (36 points)
- Research Capacity: Research Labs 1-3 are fully operational.
- Medical Capacity: the Medical Lab is fully operational.
- Manufacturing Capacity: Workshops 1-3 are fully operational. HQX's research and manufacturing capacity cannot be expanded further, but additional infrastructure improvements may be possible at a later date.
- Base Defense: Missile Defense and Laser Defense have been completed. Plasma Defense may be constructed. Current base defense factor: 84
- Laser Pistol: Nine units have been constructed. Units may be constructed with an integrated VDU targeting system (+3 engineer-weeks per unit).
- Laser Rifle: One unit has been constructed.
- Motion Sensor: Two units have been constructed.
- Personal Armor: Six suits have been constructed. Helmets have been upgraded to resist mental attacks. Units may be constructed with stealth augmentation (+4 engineer-weeks per unit)
- Powered Armor: Five suits have been constructed. Armor has been upgraded to Mark 2, which is 20% lighter.
- Plasma Cells: Ammunition for the alien plasma weapons can be constructed, requiring Elerium-115.
- Medikit: Current level: Advanced Medikit 2. Doctor White's medical lab can construct twelve of these kits each week without compromising our manufacturing capacity. If you wish to dedicate additional resources to the project, the kits can be produced at a faster rate.
- Advanced Surgical Kit (10): An advanced field intervention kit that can stabilize and restore a dying soldier. (ooc: Raise Dead)
- Heavy Weapons Platform: Two Laser Tanks produced, one of which was upgraded to a Plasma Tank (destroyed). It takes 3 engineers one week to restore a seriously damaged HWP to full working order.
- HWP Repair Kit: These repair kits can only be used on HWPs and require about twice the resources of a medikit to construct.
- Psi-Lab (26): Construction is underway. This lab will enable us to improve our defenses against the alien mental attacks, and may even eventually allow some of our agents to develop any nascent psionic abilities that they may possess.
- Experimental Heavy Armor: Exceptional protection, but requires the Heavy Armor Proficiency (or the armor penalty ring) to use.
- Ablative Armor Shielding: Personal Armor Upgrade. Adds 5 Positive Energy resistance in exchange for a -1 Armor Check penalty. Note that this upgrade is already included in the X-COM Powered Armor.
