ooc: what i meant was, that the research lists don't list the sectoid leader and floater engineer. apologies. the inclusion of the floater medic was a mistake... it was already mentioned in current projects. just trying to keep organized.

The strains of Bach went on for a while longer. The hitting of the piano keys seemed to grow harder and harder, as the melody progressed, and after a few minutes Catalina just slammed the lid down and stood up.

"I don't understand you, I just don't understand you at all." Catalina's voice was shaking with anger as she railed on those left in the room. "Three of you just sat and passed the time of day while Vas stood there stunned. You didn't say anything let alone try to help." She gestured in Jane's direction. "At least Jane backed me up over the need to so something about this, but you just ignored it!"

"This is a member of your team, for Christ's sake. Who knows what could have happened. At that range the thing could have done permanant damage." Her fist slammed down on the top of the piano, as Catalina raged. "That woman has been nothing but a pain in the arse since we got here and now this? An unprovoked attack on a member of your team, someone who has stood in the line of fire with you and done what they could to save your skin. Somebody maybe you owe your life to. Doesn't that mean anything?"

Catalina couldn't give a fig for it right now but 26 on the med lab won't guarantee it's completion and we need to research the bomb. Off to work but will elaborate later.))

Jane continues work on the Psi-Lab vigilantly. It's important that the work gets completed and it gets done right. She's learned much at her time with X-COM engineering staff and it's shown. Grace and Dr. Sandesh and the others have been good influences on her. What was once a woman whose ambitions that never crossed into the academic field by much, have over time, broadened by quite a bit. True she always knew quite a lot of languages; but, those she picked up from travelling with her parents when she was younger and later field work.

Now she was learning at an incredible rate every day from these people and she greatly appreciated them. They had been opening her mind to questions she'd never raised before... answers she'd never considered before. There was so much more to go on about.

Yet one thing remained to focus on... the Psi-Lab needed to be completed... and any mistakes in its construction would need to be fixed early rather than later when it was too late. The risk of an operative with malfunctioning Psionic abilities was too risky to fathom.

((OOC - I definately think 26 is not going to make it on the construction of the lab. From what LB posted as rolls 26 + Jane's 3 gave 29, so we need 31. With the best will in the world Jane can't get +5, and from what's been posted I don't think Vasily has enough points in Craft Mech to risk it, as it might detract from rather than improve the number we have.

I agree we need another kit, but if we want to guarantee it's production I think it will have to come from reducing Medikit output (assuming LB allows it) or from Jim and Mary helping there and not with research. Prevention is better than cure, but last session a medic went down, and immediately took out half our supply there, so does that balance the risk?

We can't risk not finishing the psi lab, so I think we have to put the 31 in there, and have any spare engineers that Jane's roll produces fall over into either the resus kit or the medikit, depending on what's allowed.))

Jane applies for more pilot training in case there is a need for a back-up pilot or any emergencies that may come up. The instructions she's received so far have been helpful; but, now that they may be going into space... there is an added level of danger, so she wants to be prepared. Space travel is a whole 'nother level of travel.

In addition, Jane signs up for spacee-flight training and ship operations, in case of any emergencies. She's certainly not gifted at it; but, at least it's basic training: operating automated launch, landing and docking sequences; some manual manuevering; EVA suits; repairs; survival in space; first-aid in space; Zero-G maneuvering; Low-G manuevering; combat in those situations; etc.

The training could hopefully lead the others to similar skills.

It's a slow week, a respite of sorts. It's almost as if the aliens have all gone on vacation.

Alpha spends the days after the Los Angeles mission waiting for the other shoe to drop. But other than a few incursions by small craft in the Eastern Hemisphere that come and go before an intercept is possible, the board is quiet. Intel does pick up some coded transmissions between Mars and locations in France and China, but X-COM's code crackers aren't able to provide any useful data.

It's no surprise at all when China withdraws from the international consortium and announces a separate treaty with the aliens.

Everyone knows that events are building to something, but X-COM takes full advantage of the lull. In the secret U.S. DoD aerospace facility, the shell of the AVENGER craft begins to take form, while at HQX, research and manufacturing projects are completed, and new ones started to ensure that when things heat up again, X-COM will be ready to respond.

RE: Research/Manufacturing Progress Report

We have had an unexpected lull this last week. Who knows how long it will last, but we need to take full advantage of the situation. We've hit the aliens hard these last few weeks, but it's almost certain that they are working on something big.

Construction of the Psi Lab has been completed. As soon as we have calibrated all of the new instruments, we will begin testing subjects for psionic aptitude. Alpha Team will be first on the list. Once basic aptitude has been classified, then we can begin setting up a training regimen. Grace is working on plans for a Psi Amp that will allow individuals with high Psi ratings to conduct mental attacks in a manner similar to that evidenced by alien leaders.

The Chryssalid countermeasures serum is complete. There are still some minor side effects, including muscle stiffness and some lingering weakness, but those fade in about five minutes. The serum should be 100 percent effective at removing an implanted embryo.

Work on the Blaster Launcher is progressing very quickly. We can assign one of the two teams working on it to another project, if you wish; we anticipate a breakthrough on it within the next few days.

The Floater Medic interrogation yielded some information that can help us to improve the efficiency of our medical processes.

Note that we sent some of our prisoners on to the off-site secure containment facility, when preliminary interrogations indicated that they were not likely to have any useful information. At this point, the capture of alien Leaders and Commanders should be considered a top priority.

An irritated sigh from Vasily is what finally fills the long silence, as he flexes one hand, trying to get movement back into his extremities. After several long ((week-long )) moments have passed, he speaks. "Ok - I deal with Drake. Ok? I big boy now. Is not big deal... not like I not been shot with one of those things before," he adds, possibly to try and save some face after such a potentially humiliating episode.

"Still." And here, the Russian's brow creases in consternation. "Not a word from anyone else... it surprise me, you know. So I want to say this."

"Maybe I not like you. Is fine. We all pretty different, huh? If we had meet outside of war, on street, in cafe... maybe we not have much to say. In years to come, if we survive, I not see us meeting up much to have a drink and talk about the old days."

"But you know what?" Vasily raises his eyebrows, and shrugs dismissively. "That mean nothing. This is hard job, the hardest. Let make no bone about it, we go into Hell, and we go there to fight monsters. Our bodies, our minds, all beaten and bruised. This job already killed some, broken others - hard professionals, too."

He folds his arms, rests against the doorjamb. "But, we all still alive. When I first see Alpha Team, I not think we ready, but we all still here - and you new people, you got with the program fast. We all still on the level, up here," He taps his forehead, for empasis, "And that say none of you weak. I may not like you, sure - maybe you care about that, maybe you don't. But you all have my respect, no question."

Vasily finishes, and looks around at the Team. "What you say to that?"

ooc i suppose manufacturing depends on the weight of the experimental armor and if James is all set to wear it without issues.

it's a significant investment to have it go bad.

I'd really like to see it go forward if possible. we need to protect the doctors... mary too when she's ready.

Jane signed up for her turn in the Psi-Lab. The experience of being a lab rat... so-to-speak... was a bit unnerving: being hooked up to electrodes & monitors; having doctors and researchers hovering about her; questioning every aspect of her reaction to her experience to the lab.

ooc last week was Yom Kippur... plus some real life issues i was dealing with... i wasn't sure how to deal with the powerful topic of the Inise Drake issues and the aftermath properly. Also didn't realize we'd be going forward one week today.

Jane finds Vasily at some point.

Jane quietly begins, "Dunno about the others; but, I was a bit stunned at Agent Drake's actions against you with the stun gun. It was wrong, flat out. When I recovered from my shock, I backed up Catalina's voiced expression of wanting to file a formal complaint against Agent Drake.

I know I should have said something to you sooner; but, I felt you needed a little space to deal with this on your own terms. It did not seem right for a woman to be fighting a man's battles for him against a woman. I wanted you to figure out how to deal with this on your own terms; but, to know you had my support. I think the others were in the same position; but, I cannot speak for them. I just know that you are a proud man and sometimes it is difficult to know what to do or say when you get humiliated like this.

Please know that you have my full support and I'm sure you have the full support of the entire team. She humiliated us as much as you that night."

We all still on the level, up here," He taps his forehead, for empasis, "And that say none of you weak. I may not like you, sure - maybe you care about that, maybe you don't. But you all have my respect, no question."

Vasily finishes, and looks around at the Team. "What you say to that?"



Jim looks as Vas as if he were a new form of virulent alien. "What are you talking about, Vas? Did I miss something? Old battle-irons wasted you with a stunner when you weren't looking? Well, maybe I didn't say anything cause I didn't notice it. So next time you want some backup, just let me know, cause I got your back a lot more than I've got hers - I've risked my life to patch you up before, and expect I will again."

Jim's expression softens, and he takes on a more philosophical look. "Truth. All these interpersonal squabbles, annoying as they are - they pale in comparison to what we are fighting. An alien invasion, inimical to humanity - we need to hang together if we are gonna make it. Cause scary as it is, I'm starting to think we - yep, alpha team - are humanities last, best hope."

......

Somewhat later, during the discussion on what to build and research, Jim wasn't shy about expressing his views.

"I've been going through between 10 and 20 of the med-kits per mission. Our new doc here has been using quite a few as well since she joined us. So I know we need them. But - if you guys knew how amazing the new resuscitation technology in the advanced surgical kits was - I swear, we just have to have at least one of those kits with us. More, better. I'll work as hard as I can until our next mission to get these things built.

Oh, and one more request - I need some powered armor as well. I think I've squeezed in enough lessons so I can operate the thing without killing myself."


ooc: apply craft pharma and knowledge earth and life plus profession (Doctor) to assist with advanced surgical kit or if that is not feasible then with medical kits.

As Vasily and Allen the anger fueling Catalina's outburst subsided to a drained expression. She turned to the Russian. "If it had been the other way around? Would you have stepped in to help out?" She raised her arms and let them fall helplessly. "I'd kind of like to think someone would, you know? The bitch could as easily have gone for me as for you, in fact I'm surprised she didn't, except for one factor."

"Supposing you did step in, would that have been insulting my own abilities in any way? You weren't in any position to help yourself when I went after her." Catalina flopped back down on the piano stool. "Yeah, you're a big boy, but isn't that what we're supposed to do? Help one another when we can't help ourselves?"

"You forget one thing she didn't. She's female and, notably, you're a man. You hit her and what does it look like? If I were to do it then there's an even playing field." She gave a hollow laugh. "Some of you would probably enjoy watching a cat fight. So she's crafty and aims for the one who couldn't punch her in the face if the gun failed."

"Maybe I have higher expectations, think I owe enough to you all to want to jump in against all comers. Hope that fighting alongside one another like this would make us friends?" Catalina shook her head and raising the lid turned her face back to the keys. "Me I would like to get together for a few bevvies once in a while, assuming we survive this. If we don't win I'd have hoped you'd join me in a resistance cell, perhaps, and continue the fight."

Vasily looked a little indignant. "You got some funny ideas about not being able to hit people," he began, "not to mention about the man who has stood in the front line and taken all that could be thrown at him day in, day out. You think I would do any less, now? Should X-Com die and yet we somehow live, I do not think any of us quit the fight."

Upon that thought, though, another seems to strike him, and his expression softens as he takes on an almost philosophical aspect - curiously apt, given the piano music being played. Eventually, he shrugs, and admits: "But then... maybe the fact that none of us really come together is good, in a way. I know there must be some reason we all survive this long, head as well as body. Maybe having hard heart is what has kept us going." He manages to look a little sad, even regretful. "Maybe is just one of those things."

After a few moments, though, he frowns again, though less severely - almost comically. "Though hard ears not so good. If some of you not hear a weapon discharge from across the room, I just hoping aliens not invade while you playing that game or we got problems."

Vasily looks a little taken aback - embarrassed? - at the suggestion that it might have been a humiliating experience at all, and indeed glances back and forth down the corridor to see if anyone had overheard. "Uh, thank you Jane, is all fine," he eventually mumbles.

"We got options there. Could build you suit of powered armour, mark 2, or - if you think you handle heavier mark 1 version, maybe could get my suit resized - and I replace with this new experimental suit," Vasily mused. "But then, not sure if we got time to build super suit right now. This new... medkit building upgrade maybe more important, so."

"If we build Allen suit of armour, and put two teams on new medical production interface, hopefully that help a little with our supply problem," he ventures. "Maybe one of you doctors need to help out there, or help out building the resuscitation kit, as we only got one man spare after that and I not sure if he enough."

"For research, I think it about time we start develop on OSNAZ serum. You remember? Our medkits right now pretty decent enough, from what I read here improvement to them not going to be big change. New serum might give us new advantage finally. Their medical machine almost save that mission - almost," he adds with a trace of chagrin, "except for our own carelessness."

"Besides that, if we continue on bomb - I think it good idea we have that kind of power to throw at aliens, never mind the danger to us - and start asking floater engineer some questions. Maybe he give some tips to help eggheads with Project AVENGER - or maybe something else, it all good."

"And, you know, I still got this stungun. I spend most of time using giant plasma gun at range and alien knife up close, so maybe it not good idea that I have third weapon to worry about. Maybe could, but maybe not. Maybe it best someone take it before I shoot it at Agent Drake. Anyone want to use it?"
