((OOC - Yeah! My brain goes into burnout if the conversation is jumped ahead! )) Most of the conversation on where to place resources remained unremarked upon by Catarina. She just nodded and mumbled agreement in a subdued fashion, with the odd "Good point" thrown in. When the question about the stunner was raised she looked thoughtful for a moment, and then remarked, "I'll take it at need, but if not me then I think one of the Doc's should have it. You other three are handling the weapons doing the most damage and shouldn't be distracted from it." Her brow creased a little, "In fact given the need for Doc A and Doc M to be on the ball with healing, it might be better if I take it." She shrugged a little, "Seems the best to me, but whatever you think." Her finger then tapped on the floater engineer, "I might head down and see if there is anything I can contribute there. Skill with languages was a selection criteria when hired by SIS, this is alien of course but I've had a little exposure by now. Maybe throwing in some familiarity with technology will help the process, who knows?" (OOC - Agree with SA on the regen serum front, if it's an increase of +1 on the medikits then that's not too significant, and that interface thingy looks too interesting to ignore. As for armour, then whatever Chiz says Allen wants as a priority. Dunno about that using the armour without profficiencies thing, we all rely on Dex to shoot. Skills wise Catalina will help, I hope, on the interrogation. Linguist skill as an intelligence roll against Int of 16 and Smart level bonus of 2. Knowledge Technology is 15, I think, if it's allowed to contribute in anyway. ))

ooc: I need chiz to confirm; but, he PM'ed me during gaming session that his character has the medium and heavy armor proficiencies. He would like to use the heavier armors. I do not know whether he selected them during level-ups or when. Chiz, If you could elaborae if your character has them or if you acquired them by using the special "ring" item, or what he deal is. it would help us to decide what to do about allocating resources. cc'ing Chiz

Later Catalina wanders along to see Doctor White and undergo her preliminary testing. She settled into the appropriate chair, and waited to be hooked up to the equipment. "Ooo that tickles," she said as the male nurse placed the various monitor tabs, grinning suggestively at him. "Stan, are you sure you want to risk letting me loose with psychic powers? Just imagine what I could get up to with the power of suggestion." Catalina smirked, winking at the male nurse, then grinned. "Hey! I need to know a little more about alien physiology, you know. I mean, if they think their mind blasts are stunning, should I learn how to do it we'll see just how stunning thoughts can get!"

ooc currently from people's stated projects Research Blaster Launcher (10) Regenerative Serum 1 [20; Mary - Life Sciences & Craft Pharma 14 each) Floater Engineer (6; plus I’m assuming Catalina - Knowledge Technology 16) Manufacturing Advanced Medical Production Interface (20) Powered Armor (15) (for Dr. Allen - by request) Advanced Surgical Kit (1; plus Jane's craft mech +16 & repair 15 plus Jm – Treat Injury around 20 & K/Life Sci & Craft Pharma around 13) (we need another one) Catalina stated she was working on the Floater Enginner; Dr. Allen mentioned he'd work on the Advanced Surgical Kit as 1st on the list, with others later on the list as well (time permitting, priorities considered too). Short-handed as the Advanced Surgical Kit will be in Manufacture PLUS some ideas I'd like to discuss with LB.

Jane approached Dr. Allen with this idea, "Hiya, Dr. Allen. I know you're kind of busy getting the Advanced Surgical Kit ready. I was wondering if there was a way to make the side-effects on the patient less exhausting... less draining... or however one puts it. From first-hand experience, returning from... the dead... or whatever that state of being is... is unpleasant. With all the medical advances we've discovered... is there some way to improve on the Advanced Surgical Kit to make the difference between life and death easier on the body and essence of being? I'll help in whatever way you instruct." ooc: craft mech +16

Mary Ranma had no idea why Agent Drake shot Vasily. She never could understand Americans, and their affinity for shooting each other. She decided early on to stay away from the woman. Drake made her nervous. EVERY well armed American un-nerved her a little, even her closest ally, Jane Swift. For the same reason, she also decided not get caught up in Catalina and Dr. Allen's outrage over the incident. Yes, what happened was abominable. But to join in the ring of objections, would be to invite Agent Drake's attention. She LIKED the agent not taking heed of her. Welcomed it. "Besides," Mary whispered to herself, lying in her sickbay cot, "you've done worse to the man." In the early days of her service at X-Com, when she shivered with fear and doubt, Mary prayed to be taken away from this mad place. When anyone called her name, she wanted to hide under a rock. And in battle, when she found herself in harm's way for the first time ever, she clung to anything or anyONE, she thought would keep her alive. Even if it meant she was the ONLY one alive. And there he was, the Russian, Kasprjak. A giant of a man. Standing toe to 'toe', battling like Lord Rama, with monsters. To Mary's terrified mind, he seemed like an indestructible hero. And when on occasion he did appear to be weakened, Mary resolved to be RIGHT THERE, with alien stimulants and clean bandages. Even now, months after joining Alpha Team, months after becoming a bit of a seasoned fighter herself, Mary still often found herself on the battlefield, steps behind Vasily, ready to patch his wounds. Not out of any feelings for the man. He seemed nice enough. No, her reasons were much more selfish than that. She still didn't want to die. She still didn't want to get hurt. In the grip of combat, when her heart and mind were racing, she saw Vasily as the intractible wall she could hide behind, and stay safe. He was tough. He could take the pain and injury that was meant for her. And if he ever looked like he might falter... well, she was a doctor after all. She could keep him defending her indefinitely. "MUCH worse!" Mary groaned, then rolled over and went to sleep.

Having been critically wounded by a powerful alien weapon, Mary Ranma had no choice, but to enjoy the lull since the last mission, resting. For the first few days she was under the watchful care of the medical team. After she was released, she spent most of the time, in her own cot in the barracks. During that time, Dr. Allen sent down a few notes he had taken, regarding his work on the advanced surgical kit project. Strictly, Mary was sure, as a courtesy to a team mate. He knew - and she knew he knew- that she probably could offer no insight on this project. Mary had almost no experience as a surgeon. The battlefield operation on Catalina was her most difficult to day. Besides, Allen had been fighting this war a long time. He knew the alien tech and alien medicine. All she knew is what vein to shoot it in. Mary was pleased to hear that the one project she did work on, the Cryssalid Countermeasure, had been seen to completion. She took pride in the fact that some of research SHE had done, had been used in part to concoct the final product: a serum that if injected in time, could zero in on an invasive cryssalid embryo, and disintegrate it into a flushable liquid. "HEYYYY!" Eight days into her recuperation, Mary climbed suddenly out of bed. Earlier that morning, Jane had brought her a laptop. It crashed to the floor, as she threw off the covers. "Oh no! No no! Not now!" she cried, when the laptop blinked out. She walked/hobbled all the way to the Medical Level, in search of Dr. Allen; the laptop tucked under her arm. Before he could speak, she blurted out excitedly, "I've been looking at the Regenerative Serum project all day and I think I have something that might make it work better. We could use tie it in with the Cryssalid project. If we could get some fresh sample of early stage Cryssalid embryonic tissue, we might be able to reverse engineer it in order to make an additive to the formula, that could rapidly generate new tissue. I compared your research from Russia with some stem cell cultures I had taken during the autopsy, and I think I could do it. I worked up some models on the computer and.. I STILL CANT GET THE DAMN THING TO POWER ON!!! DAMN DAMN DAMN!!!" "Mary, calm down," James said softly. "Put the laptop down. Take a deep breath." She set the broken PC on the counter, gasping for air, her eyes wild. "Do you think you can recall your models?" "I don't know. I THINK so. I'm not sure. Yes... maybe." "Okay. Get yourself down to the Bio Lab. But first. Go get some clothes on. Nobody's going to taken you seriously in your jammies. " (OOC: Mary is devoting her attention to the regenerative serum project. Knowledge Life Sciences: 14; Craft Pharmaceutical, same)

It is a productive week at X-COM. The interrogation of the Floater Engineer is completed, and Grace retires to her workshop with notes that she says should help with upcoming breakthroughs. (Cat: 19 +5, Linguistics [secondary skill]) Jane helps out with the Advanced Surgical Kit (15+15, Craft Mech [secondary skill]), but it's James Allen who achieves a breakthrough. Applying new techniques, he is able to finish not only the kit that the team has been working on, but a second kit. (20 + 13, Craft Pharma [primary skill]). Finally, Mary is able to complete the preliminary work on the regen serum, and ends the week with a phial of prototype substance that is ready for a battle trial. (15 +14, Knowledge Life Sciences [primary skill]) Work on the Blaster Launcher and Medical Interface is completed. A suit of Mk. 2 Powered Armor for Doctor Allen is completed. With research and manufacturing work progressing ahead of schedule, the team receives a message from Joan Beauvois to report to the new Psi Lab adjunct to Medical 1 for "testing."

ooc I'm not sure I understand the reference to the Blaster Launcher... I thought we were told a full team was enough to get it researched and that it cannot be reproduced. Do we have any captured that we can use or what's the story? Are we still researcing it because we didn't devote enough resources? Ie, did we fail a research roll for the researchers?

| It was my mistake; I'd forgotten that you'd already poured a week into it earlier. I'll include it in the "research complete" list in tomorrow's e-mail. My understanding is that Cat has the captured launcher. You can use it starting with the next mission. Any more captured after that can be used immediately.

Hadrian wasn't all that jazzed about the required psi-testing and training. While he understood the aliens had mental powers and had been startled by the experiences with them, he was less than enthusiastic about having someone poke around and prod his brain to stimulate and develop these powers in himself. He knew there was no getting out of it, but immediately decided he'd not waste much time or effort on the whole thing. In the days that followed, he would show up for psi-training, when someone would track him down and remind him of it. He put in the minimal time and effort demanded, and promptly left when sessions were over. Efforts by staff to further engage him on the topic were rebuffed with polite apathy. In his spare time, Hadrian familiarized himself with his newly acquired stun rod, practicing various attack and defense moves, as well as disassembling and reassembling it for cleaning and simple repairs. OOC: You can give Hadrian a -1 or -2 on training rolls to reflect his lack of interest and effort in psi-training for now.

Sheesh, I saw that I forgot to give you the latest Medikits last night as well (I handed out Advanced 1 instead of Advanced 2). Well, I'll make it up to you by boosting next week's output. That's what comes of taking two weeks off! Psi rolls, updates, and new research options in tonight's post. You can gain a +1 bonus to Psi rolls (or a penalty, if you insist!) by posting an IC comment on the training, but such comments must be submitted before the results are posted. I decided to make the DC15 rather than 20, and the gain will be the amount that you beat the roll (with no penalty for failure).

FROM: Jane Swift, X-COM Field Agent TO: Michael Garret, X-COM UN Liaison RE: Mission Report – Australia Bad Intel… we were set up. It was a trap: the scout ship was larger than expected; the landing site was littered with ambushers that nearly killed two members of our team, including one of our medics; the ship itself contained a new species, plus an Ethereal Leader, tons of soldiers, a booby-trapped power-supply, and ABSOLUTELY no hint of an alien commander that we were told was aboard. The ship was full of cryo-pods full of released soldiers that we had been fighting for our lives with, before the ship was set to self-destruct… with the intent to trap us inside, killing all of us.

"It's alright, I'm here now! Where do you want me? What, no straps this time? That was the only reason I came." Catalina had spent her time avoiding any talk of the psi training, and evading anyone trying to engage her in it. "Okay, okay. I'm sitting, I'm sitting. Wire me up, and remember I'm ticklish." The one time she could have been overheard doing so was at breakfast the morning after the mission, when the whole testing was described to a fascinated Jarvis. "Honestly, I can't see the point in this. Wouldn't it be better just spending more time on the others? Whoever made us just couldn't fit it in on top of all the style and charm." Even then, the discussion had been accompanied by much shrugging and rueful smiling on her part. "Fine, fine. I know it's important. Believe me I've no desire to have one of them kill me again." Her whole attitude the outcome of the testing was off-hand, and to the upcoming training blasé at best. "Look, I'm trying okay? I'm doing my best. If you're this keen for me to be able to undo your flies with my cerebral cortex then who am I to argue?" Yet she turned up to the initial training sessions allocated to her promptly, and apart from the usual banter was co-operative. Defeat wasn't generally a situation she cared to admit. "We'll see how it goes." ((OOC - Catalina is trying for now, let's see what the rolls bring out. At least now when I get that one it's not going to fry her brains! ))

I am cautiously optimistic in the case of Vasily. A review of mission logs shows Vasily to have recieved a lot of attention from the alien psychic powers, and I have a strong feeling this is a factor in his overcoming any difficulties he has with the concept of psychic power. Over the last couple of days he has continued to throw himself into the training with the stated goal of strengthening his own mental defences, and he does so with resolve and perseverence - if not enthusiasm. He continues to be openly wary of developing such powers himself. However, although Vasily lacks the obvious aptitude of other Alpha Team members, I feel his determined attitude could yield results given enough time. We are working on this issue, and it is my hope that if other Alpha Team members start developing such powers and using them actively, Vasily will want to follow suit. As for the results themselves... |

Okay, hopefully I've got this all straightened out. * * * * * The psionic training regimen starts... slowly. Counselor Beauvois is patient but uncompromising. More than one member of Alpha Team stalks from the banks of testing apparatus and training devices in frustration, only to find the door to the lab sealed and unresponsive. For two hours each day, the members of Alpha Team train at developing their latent mental abilities. For Mary and James, the exercises seem almost second nature, and they show remarkable progress in just the first few days. Jane, too, shows some potential. For the others, the work is more... challenging. Psi Training rolls (Will save DC15): Cat: 5 + 6 +1 (post) = 12 (No Progress) James: 10 + 12 = 22 (+8 ) Hadrian: 1 + 9 -1 = 9 (No Progress) Jane: 7 + 11 +1 = 19 (+5) Mary: 12 + 12 = 24 (+10) Vasily: 5 + 5 +1 = 11 (No Progress) Doctor Wagner's weekly e-mail.
FROM: DR. KIMBERLY WAGNER, X-COM RESEARCH LEAD TO: MEMBERS, ALPHA TEAM CC: MICHAEL GARRET, GRACE THELON BELUCA, AGENT INISE DRAKE RE: Research/Manufacturing Progress Report Again our work continues on schedule, and all current projects have been completed. The alien ambush at the Great Barrier Reef has forced our hand; we now must continue with our original project of securing an alien commander through an all-out attack on an enemy base. By decrypting the captured alien navigation data from the last few alien ships, we have identified a primary base in the mountains of western China. All that we have learned about the aliens suggests that a commander will be found within this facility. Expect intense resistance. Any Chinese forces encountered in the region must be considered alien allies and should be terminated. Research Priorities (36 points total): Completed Research:
- Laser Weapons: Research complete. Laser pistols may be constructed.
- Laser Rifle: Research complete.
- Laser Cannon: Research complete. Laser Defense may be constructed.
- Plasma Cannon: Research complete. All future interceptors will be equipped with this weapon. Plasma Defense may be constructed.
- Motion Scanner: Research complete. Improved Motion Sensor has been completed.
- Heavy Weapons Platforms: Research complete. Laser Tanks may be constructed. Plasma Tanks may be constructed.
- Alien Medicine: Research complete. The new Medical Lab will produce at least twelve medikits per week. Dr. White reports that when the lab is involved in research projects, such as alien autopsies, the rate of production will slow. Further upgrades may come from research into alien life forms.
- Elerium-powered Biogenesis Unit: Project complete. Increases Medikit output by 50% or more.
- Advanced Medical Production Interface: This upgrade uses alien computer technology and information from the captive Floater Medic to improve the efficiency of our Biogenesis unit. While not affecting base medikit production, this improvement allows one engineer to produce one medkit per week's work, compared to two engineer/weeks at present.
- Alien Alloys: Research complete. Personal Armor is now available for manufacture.
- Psi Lab: Project complete.
- Powered Armor: Research complete. Helmets have been upgraded to provide resistance from alien psionic attacks.
- Elerium-115 Reactor: Project complete.
- Plasma Pistol: Research complete.
- Plasma Rifle: Research complete.
- Heavy Plasma: A massive alien plasma weapon. (ooc: requires the Exotic Firearms Proficiency feat to use).
- Vibroblade: An alien melee weapon. Research complete.
- Small Launcher: An alien stun weapon. Research complete.
- Blaster Launcher: This devastating weapon launches guided blaster bombs that explode in an incredibly powerful fusion explosion. The blast radius is considerable, and friendly fire must be a consideration. This weapon cannot be reloaded and once discharged can be discarded. We cannot reproduce this weapon with our current technology.
- Chryssalid Countermeasure: Our Biological Sciences team has produced a serum.
- Regenerative Serum 1: Based on data taken from the Russian base, these serums temporarily grant field agents regenerative abilities, but with mild to moderate side effects. Future upgrades may be possible.
- Sectoid Prisoner: Research complete.
- Snakeman Soldier: Research complete.
- Floater Navigator: Research complete.
- Floater Medic: Research complete.
- Floater Engineer: Research complete.
- Sectoid Leader: Research complete.
- Snakeman Navigator: Research complete.
- Snakeman Leader: Research complete.
- Ethereal Leader: Research complete. Psionic research tree opened.
- Alien Navigation: Research complete.
- Alien Power Supply: Research complete.
- Sectoid Autopsy: Research complete.
- Snakeman Autopsy: Research complete.
- Floater Autopsy: Research complete.
- Reaper Autopsy: Research complete.
- Chryssalid Autopsy. Research complete.
Current Projects: All current projects completed. Available Projects:
- Alien Grenade: These explosives seem to be based on a biochemical agent combined with a tiny amount of Elerium-115.
- Advanced Medikit 3: Improves efficiency of current medikits.
- Regenerative Serum 2: A more potent version of the serum.
- Psi-Amp: Doctor Beauvois and Grace Beluca have put together a plan for a device that will allow X-COM field agents to amplify psionic energy, granting them abilities similar to Sectoid commanders and Ethereals. This device can only be used by individuals with advanced Psionic Potential scores that have trained in the Psi-Lab.
- Advanced Psi Research 1: Applies newest intelligence from alien data sources. Grants +5 to Psi scores of entire team.
Current Prisoners held in Alien Containment:
- Snakeman Engineer.
- Sectoid Engineer.
Note that we sent some of our prisoners on to the off-site secure containment facility, when preliminary interrogations indicated that they were not likely to have any useful information. At this point, the capture of alien Leaders and Commanders should be considered a top priority. Manufacturing Priorities (36 points)
- Research Capacity: Research Labs 1-3 are fully operational.
- Medical Capacity: the Medical Lab is fully operational.
- Manufacturing Capacity: Workshops 1-3 are fully operational. HQX's research and manufacturing capacity cannot be expanded further, but additional infrastructure improvements may be possible at a later date.
- Base Defense: Missile Defense, Laser Defense, and Plasma Defense have been completed. Current base defense factor: 84
- Laser Pistol: Nine units have been constructed. Units may be constructed with an integrated VDU targeting system (+3 engineer-weeks per unit).
- Laser Rifle: One unit has been constructed.
- Motion Sensor: Two units have been constructed.
- Personal Armor: Six suits have been constructed. Helmets have been upgraded to resist mental attacks. Units may be constructed with stealth augmentation (+4 engineer-weeks per unit)
- Powered Armor: Five suits have been constructed. Armor has been upgraded to Mark 2, which is 20% lighter.
- Plasma Cells: Ammunition for the alien plasma weapons can be constructed, requiring Elerium-115.
- Medikit: Current level: Advanced Medikit 2. Doctor White's medical lab can construct twelve of these kits each week without compromising our manufacturing capacity. If you wish to dedicate additional resources to the project, the kits can be produced at a faster rate. With the new Advanced Production Interface online, each additional engineer dedicated to medikit production produces +1 medikit/week.
- Advanced Surgical Kit: An advanced field intervention kit that can stabilize and restore a dying soldier. (ooc: Raise Dead)
- Heavy Weapons Platform: Two Laser Tanks produced, one of which was upgraded to a Plasma Tank (destroyed). It takes 3 engineers one week to restore a seriously damaged HWP to full working order.
- HWP Repair Kit: These repair kits can only be used on HWPs and require about twice the resources of a medikit to construct.
- Psi-Lab: Construction is complete. This lab will enable us to improve our defenses against the alien mental attacks, and may even eventually allow some of our agents to develop any nascent psionic abilities that they may possess.
- Experimental Heavy Armor: Exceptional protection, but requires the Heavy Armor Proficiency (or the armor penalty ring) to use.
- Ablative Armor Shielding: Personal Armor Upgrade. Adds 5 Positive Energy resistance in exchange for a -1 Armor Check penalty. Note that this upgrade is already included in the X-COM Powered Armor.
|
| All previous projects have been completed, and the full research and manufacturing staff are ready to be assigned to new tasks.
