seems our IRC issues are getting us a bit of bad press... this is what was posted on the Vault today and went out on their RSS feed...

urgh, this is a bit off topic, but most people had given up on anyone from Neverwinter Connections being around at all.
Please, please, please could someone fix the irc server. It's been broken for over 2 weeks now various people have attempted to contact someone who actually runs the site, but have had no reply.
It's not entirely off topic - you can't have the planned chat sessions in IRC when your server's broken.
Bump.
There's been a netsplit between chat.neverwinterconnections.com and live.neverwinterconnections.com the past two weeks. Most of the services are on chat, but connecting to irc.neverwinterconnections.com tends to put people on live first.
Unfortunately, neither RedR nor Rizzen are around, and they're the only two IRCops that I know of. |

i really hate to be a pain in the @$$, but i would like to re-open the discussion about what, if anything, is going to be done to revamp this site.
there are still numerous bugs in the site (nothing critical) and a lot that these forums don't have that newer systems do. again, it's nothing critical, but it does feel about 5 years old. no signature files, no ranking sytem, no rep system, RRS feeds, etc. all these things are common place these days.
again... i hate to scratch at an old wound, but that post on the Vaults feed just kind of irked me. it's from Karvon's post at the bioboard regarding the NWCon4. So... we are there trying to advert something kewl that is going to happen and then it gets overshadowed by bugs in the system. not good, IMO.
sorry to vent my spleen. i feel better now.

Brian Chung Quoted someone else at the biosite for the top part of that comment. wasnt his words cept the bottom folks.
The vualt fronts comments when ever someone from bioware has something to say.
but the schedule feeds to the bio/obs site from here I feel is the #1 dearly missed feature. as well as old Staff.

yes... you are right, of course. bad quoting on my part.
i was mainly trying to point out that these issues are self defeating. lack of feeds to the bio pages... bad press in the forums... out dated and somewhat dis-functional site all contribute to the slow demise of this place.
yes, the site does what it's designed to do... schedule games. but it does it with a few glaring bugs that make this site less than top notch.
normally i just ignore it, but that quote on the front page of the vault just brought it home even more so than normally.
i truly wish the owners of the site would either be more involved or give up control. sell the site or something. i think it does a dis-service to the community to let it go on like this.
my bitter two cents.

It may be time to talk to Rizzen about somebody else taking over the site (hosting, building, what-have-you) if he doesn't have the time anymore. Of course, we'll need somebody(or somebodies) that will be able to take up the ball and run with it should that happen.

I'm sure everybody remembers that there was a group a while back that started that ball in motion, back a bit before NWN2 was released. Rizzen appeared just as that group was planning a new site, so the new group dropped its plans. I don't remember who all was in that (Starstuff? Bigbluepaw?) but I think many of them are gone or infrequent visitors now.

I don't think a new site is necessarily in order, but I would switch to such a site if it offered what I and my players needed: mainly a way to schedule games and have a private area for posting. I would, however, like to see either Rizzen return to his previous work or to turn the reigns over to someone else that can continue it. Unless/until that happens, we'll have to deal with the "bad press" and the many bugs that remain.

yes venture... it seems the talk of getting another site going to replace NWC got them motivated again. then... just as soon as the plans for the other site were scrapped, we stopped getting updates.
i'm with GW, tho. i would prefer this site get revamped than start a new one. the community is already here. no reason to compete. i just don't see that the current ownership is going to put anything back into this site anymore.

This is the first I have heard of the IRC split (very frustrating.) Messages sent to me here are read and I fix what I can. I don't check every day, but still quite often.

Top need would be to fix IRC. That's fragmenting the community by itself. There's lots of other features NWC could do with, but not really worth losing what you've got in the meantime...

What about making a SISTER SITE? One that has the 'missing features' and offers those along with a plethora of links back to nwc? Heck, it could even be run on the same server if Gilaun were amenable to it.

since you don't know the history, lemme 'splain.
Rizzen, not Gilaun, is the owner. Gilaun is the admin. Rizzen has in the past, been unwilling to let anyone else have control of the site.
to my knowledge, that is still the case.
unfortunately, Rizzen has also given up on adding to or rebuilding the site. it functions... mostly... for what it's designed to do. schedule games and maintain a forum. anything beyond that is not worth the effort, seemingly.
ODA, certainly people can form off site forums, blogs, guilds etc. but that completely defeats the purpose, IMO.
so... unless Rizzen is willing to give the site to someone else, or sell the site to someone, then there really isn't much we can do.
i actually regret starting this thread, because i know nothing is going to come of the conversation and that just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
thanks Gilaun for getting IRC back in order. if i may be so bold... do you have any contact with Rizzen? would he, at this point in the game, be willing/interested in relinquishing control/selling the site to someone else?

I only suggest the alternate 'sister site' because I DO know the history.
Such a sister site would not include anything this present NWC has, but only those things it lacks. The sister site would be the one to get any new features and thus not come to loggerheads with any NWC ownership issues. The ONLY thing that would need any change on the present NWC is the addition of a link to the sister site.
Honest, I see this as the most easy to do and least feather ruffling idea.
I don't have a problem with the NWC looking the way it looks, it looks FINE, and does what it does well (mostly). If we cannot address the NWC directly, let us do it indirectly.

We're not saying take this site down, we're just saying for Rizzen to give it over to somebody who has the time and desire to upgrade it.
