Project Q Review

There is no vault entry for Project Q, so I'm going to review it here.

There is no starter mod, so I had to make my own. At least they included the erfs for download. If it turns out I missed a lot of content because my starter mod is faulty, that's their fault as far as I'm concerned for not having a starter mod available. Some of us are still noobs, but we like to build too. I was impressed by the total lack of errors after the build was done. I never see that anymore in other systems.

I went through the toolset looking at all the new creatures, placeables, and items. It didn't take me very long. The vast majority of the content under creatures and placeables was recognizable as coming from CODI or DLA. I picked out all the ones I liked that weren't already in CEP and placed them in a room to take a picture. It's not much, though I did like the globe of Toril.

My favorite was a kobold (outsider) wearing goggles called Dromite. I wish I'd had him for my Lantan University mod, he would have been perfect.

I also liked the new wererats and goblins. I did *not* like the new ghouls. I found them to be monochromatic and therefore cartoony looking. Unfortunately they are overwrites, so the originals are not available when using this hak. Well, how often do you encounter ghouls anyway?

I did like the reskinned tilesets, but there are very similar reskins in CEP and elsewhere. I think they were made by Ossian Studios for Darkness Over Daggerford originally.

At this point I rolled up a PC using my starter mod. I made sure my override directory was empty first. They added a few portraits and redrew some old ones, but there is far better work on the vault by folks like Wycked.

In character creation I noticed they only have standard heads. Supposedly they look better now, but I didn't notice any difference in my human male. What I did notice was a conspicuous lack of head choices. It's just standard heads.

There is no custom clothing, armor, or weapons. Just shields. The shields looked very nice. Given that most of my PC's don't use shields, the missing clothing, armor and weapons is simply a loss with no gain. A huge loss. I'm hoping this was a mistake in my starter mod, otherwise I don't see the point of anyone using this hak set. Standard appearance armor and weapons suck. I didn't see any clothing, armor or weapon appearances on their gallery, so I suspect it wasn't a mistake on my part.

They do have some new icons for items. I found them to be to brightly colored. The traps are now coded by roman numerals. I assume I is minor, II is average, etc. I could see that coming in handy, but again the colors for the icons are now garish.

At this point, I had already decided the entire package was a waste of my time, as PC appearance is important to me and I can't see ever going back to standard NWN heads and clothing/armor. I just can't go back to this:

Not now that I'm used to playing with PC's like this:

But I wanted to at least try the combat animations, so I went into a room with some hostiles. None of them worked for me. *shrugs*

In summary: No customs heads, no custom armor or clothing (no hauberks! no cool robes! ), no custom weapons, most of the content already available in CEP. ACP doesn't work "out of the box."

I wouldn't even call this CEP lite, since it's missing heads, armor and weapon appearances that have been around for years. I can't see ever using this hak set, not without adding a lot of content, at which point it would just be CEP.

I can't believe they made such a big stink out of such a paltry selection of models. No builder is going to pass over the CEP for this. I'd surely love to see it added, though. This team really needs to get over themselves and work with the rest of the community instead of against it if the want to see their work used in any meaningful way.

There are more models than the ones I selected, I only pictured the ones I liked. The big problem IMO is that many of the creature models overwrite the standard ones, and yet may not be as good as the originals depending on your taste. I certainly didn't think they were better. They were mostly just darker, and monochromatic.
