We went ahead and sent it out in our newsletter that hits about 300 folks. Will try and get the word out in some other places. Just wondering where we host games and if anyone minds if we tie it in with our Midsummer Nights Festival on our own PW?

From my PW experience at these things, I've hosted games or events from my PW server. I think DMs running solo events usually host the game on his/her own server. Personally, I see absolutely no reason at all why you couldn't tie the Con in with your PW's special event. Sounds fun!

Although I can't be involved, I did, per Skunkeen's request, renew the nwcon.net domain name, get the site up to date with the latest security update, and change the art, etc. to reflect the new Con theme.

From a website perspective, all that remains is for me to grant access to whomever will be entering events. I just need to know who that is.

I know we will if we need to make a new name we can as well. We have three DMs scheduled on it and were aiming for Sept 10 as we might like to do a Bard Competition on Sept 11th as well.

Yawn. Pretty slow weekend by the look of it. All that 911 stuff in the states may be biting into the turnout perhaps?

How many games were scheduled for the con in total?

Be well. Game on.

the date over 911 was not intended as the first suggested time to have the nwcon a month ago the same time.

8 total nwcon sessions

On the up side 3 of those sessions are NWN2 open games, and there is an NWN2 IRC chat, plus one other that's being conducted informally. I made a deliberate attempt to reach out to the NWN2 community and they responded. They are to applauded for that considering some of the nasty confrontations the NWN2 community endured here early in the games development.

We made two important mistakes.

The first was this thread. We should have moved this decision to the larger community at the bioware social forums. There have been a lot of complaints about this weekend. 9/11 doesn't seem to be a huge factor. Most complaints are in regards to the proximity of the weekend to the start of the school year. An obvious issue that us old farts at NWC understandably overlooked and the bioware community would likely have set us straight on.

The other mistake I have to say I feel responsible for. As a marketer I knew we needed to engage larger community much earlier. We had plenty of time to create a buzz, contact PW admins, and reach out to the other smaller groups with NWN/RP interests. Unfortunately RL gave me both barrels the last 2 months and I neglected trying to start any kind of hype until about a week ago (my wife and I just moved).

Ack I'm guilty of not looking at this thread as often as I should have as RL has been a little busy. I saw a new post and came to check if a date had been set, only to find I missed the event. I'd been waiting for the usual "Post your NWCon games here" thread that usually appears, I'm afraid. Apologies.

Well said Urk.

While RL effectively blocked my involvement in running games in my NWN Greyhawk Adventures or my NWN2 Northern Cormyr campaigns as part of NWCon6 this year (shameless plugs), I am happy to see that the Sea of Dragons PW and others stepped forward.

Do we have an idea what turnout was like this year? On par with last year, better or worse?

NWCon4 was by far the largest with almost 200 users. Last year there was about 36 NWCon5 events or players if I recall right. This year there was 13 open scheduled events. the highest peak of log in users was 17 that I saw over the NWCon6 dates.

5 events on Friday, 4 events on Saturday , 4 events on Sunday

Turn out was very small

There may have been a few like me who didn't log in. I had a very good time playing on "Sea of Dragons". I had never played a DM'd NWN game before, although, I've had NWN1 AND NWN2 since they came out. It reminded me quite a bit of the old PnP days. I was surprised when the DM asked me to make some dice rolls.

Posting on the other forums is the way to go. There have been a lot more new guys participating over there. I did see your (Skunkeen) post over there, which reminded me to keep a watch out for NWCon. Glad you posted.

A problem I had is most of the NWN2 sessions were way out of my time schedule. Seems most were in Europe. I'm on Pacific time. I even downloaded and installed files for a NWN1 PW. I jumped on and played, but nobody was there when I played. I still killed some stuff and talked to a few NPCs. I think a rustmonster got me.

I've even thought about learning how to DM (within NWN2) so I can get a game going next year. Thought about using a prefabbed module, or a fully pre-built module.

I keep eyeing NWN DM's campaign that was going to start soon, but I just can't do it. I would have been playing at 3 or 4 pm on Saturdays.

Anyway, I had fun. This years NWCon offered me a chance to play a different style of NWN and I took it. Glad I did.

This game kicks butt.

Actually, AE, that session was canceled because of lacking interest.

It's hard to find people for NWN2... extremely hard.

Glad to hear you enjoyed yourself though.

That's a serious problem. The NWN2 community is extremely closed. This isn't entirely their fault. The existing NWN community didn't exactly welcome them with open arms, but if campaign gaming is going to survive we really need to find a way to re-engage them.

I have asked Kat Dragonstar to set up a private forum for that purpose. Once it's up and running we'll try to see if there's enough interest and energy left in the community to do that.

Well, I'm going to engage in a lot of self censorship here. There are things I desperately want to say, but there's really no point unless I have a desire to cause friction and strife along with hurt feelings (which I don't).

What I will say is that I don't have the time, energy, strength, patience, wherewithal or a kind and understanding spouse that would allow me to beat the "NWN2 campaign style of adventuring" drum on my own. A few hours in the evening every couple of weeks or so is all I can manage.

My posts soliciting interest here on NWC rarely generate any response.

My posts on the old Bioware NWN/NWN2 boards likewise generated next to no response.

My current posts on the BioWare Social site are disregarded in a similar fashion.

For this to work, there needs to be more than just my game. A few people seen as the core group of NWC users, both players and DMs alike need to step forward and make an effort as well.

I simply cannot be the lone voice in the wilderness anymore. Who else is willing to put their proverbial money where there mouth is?

You see the thing is... bringing new NWN2 players into this website would start out as just a few NWN2 games.

But there would be cross pollination with NWN as well.

NWN2 players would hear about a cool NWN campaign they're involved with, chat with the DM of it and branch out to the point where they'd be in games on both sides of the fence.

This would be a boon to NWN's population base on NWC as well.

But... like I said, I absolutely cannot be the poster child for this. No one person can; for success this needs a collective effort.

Past experience tells me none of this will happen. I'm sure willing to be surprised though... if anyone out there among the core NWC patron group cares to step forward.

Edited to tie back in with the general topic at hand: there may well not be a NWCon next year, if the historical downward trend of the past few years continues. This would be one way to reverse that and rejuvenate our style of on-line gaming.
