Neverwinter Connections IRC

Hello,

With the new forums we lost the previous link to the IRC chat, and the NWC chat client.

Our IRC server can be found at:
irc.neverwinterconnections.com

The client you can use to easily get on our chat server can be found here:

We hope to see you there!

Hi!

Awesome documentation that is sure to help can be found here:

Elbast’s Excellent Guide to mIRC and NWCon Seminar Primer: http://nwvault.ign.com/Files/other/data/1066780003391.shtml

It's written with the NWCon in mind, but still has a ton of useful information.

Who should I speak to about creating a permanent channel on the nwconnections irc server, if that's possible?

Sotae, your best bet is Steck or RedR. They are both on IRC most days so just message them there and they can discuss it with you.

Thanks,

Gilaun

Unable to connect to IRC

FWIW, I am unable to connect to NWC IRC at all - neither through the chat applet from the games, nor through mIRC using:

irc.neverwinterconnections.com
port: 6667

Dunno if it's just me, in my basement in southern France, or what. Used to have no troubles.

Cheers, --- Wheldrake, NWC DM HoF

I just connected fine(through the applet). But unfortunately, since i'm not that good with IRC, I can't help you.

Try again!

I connected a number of times last evening using mIRC. Are you running a firewall or anything?

No firewall, but I get this every dang time these days, I just gave up on connecting to NWC chat. I get as far as:
There are 66 users and 26 invisible on 3 servers
11 operator(s) online
39 channels formed
I have 46 clients and 2 servers
-
Current Local Users: 46 Max: 500
-
Local host: ALyon-251-1-51-164.w83-201.abo.wanadoo.fr (83.201.9.164)

And then the IRC load process just stops - I never get to the part where you can open a channel. Strange, because I connect every day to TORIL IRC chat. I wish there were any easy solution, I used to hang out on NWC IRC quite frequently.

Wheldrake: that is exactly what happened to me when my firewall updated itself a few weeks back. It decided - in its infinite wisdom - that the portscanning that IRC does was an attack on my computer and blocked the IP address doing the scan, so I froze up at the same place you did til I put the NWC IRC IPs onto my allowed list. With no firewall at your end I am not sure what's going on for you, but maybe it is some variation on this...? I dunno.

Windows SP2 did some crazy firewall stuff that messed up a lot of people. It may be that it's asserted itself?? - J'Dai

Hail !

Our IRC does port scan your computer for any use of proxies when connecting to our IRC network. We do not allow any connections from open proxy servers. If your firewall temporary blocks our IP because of this port scan, you will not be able to connect fully.

That must be what is happening. I am no PC whiz, and have Norton running, so I suppose it is blocking access to NWC IRC, because of this port scan. My IRC gets 2/3 of the way through the login process, and just stops.

This makes me wonder how many other novice NWC users simply can't connect to NWC IRC because of this strange port scan practice. At some point, you have to ask yourself whether the extra security is really worth the non-user-friendly result.

Cheers, --- Wheldrake, a former NWC IRC addict.

PS: Starstuff helped me out, and I got access, but how many newbes wouldn't go that far?

Potential Virus

Just a caution, but the zip file in the original link above contains a file, mirc.exe, which my antivirus has identified as containing the IRC.Backdoor.Trojan virus. Good thing I don't trust executables from strange people, but I'm sure some people do.

If this is confirmed to be a virus, it's a problem because it is also linked directly from the NWC New Members Guide.

I cought the virus backdoor in the down-loadable version.

I had a problem going on with my machine while my wife's machine could start and go on NWC mirc, I could not. I found I needed a Java update -- download the latest java for your OS.

When I updated my Java, the MIRC on NWC worked.

I see, so Barry, are you confirming that the file download in the top post does indeed have a Trojan in it? If so, the link in the post should be removed by an admin, and Comcast (the internet provider for the link) should be notified to remove the file from download availability, because the link is also included in the NWC Player's Guide pdf that many people already have and can download.

While I am in no way willing to vouch for the program, I believe this came up before and some scanners think that mIrc is a virus when it is in fact clean. Let me download a copy and see what mine thinks.

What software are you using to detect it?

Norton Anti-virus reports the back-door is there as well.

Well that's not saying much as Norton is the most useless POS going. BUT something can be said for marketing. Again, It could be a virus but I wouldn't trust Norton to clean my Toilet. Especially when there are free alternatives like Avast and AVG. And for the cash nothing can beat Kapersky.

Anyway, let me do a little more research on the file.

EDIT: I sent the Mirx file through kapersky's online virus scan and it came up with the following Virus " not-a-virus:Client-IRC.Win32.mIRC.602"

From what I was able to then discover this as a description of the virus:

mIRC is an IRC client. IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a network designed for real time communcation.

mIRC is probably the best known program of its type. In addition to its main function, effectively a server command shell, mIRC has other functions, such as the ability to launch scripts when connecting to the server. (This provides an opportunity to create backdoor scripts) Other functions include filtering the payload of flooders or launching flooder scripts. Due to the program's extensive functionality, extreme caution is advised when using this program.

I'll do a little more digging and see what I find.

Autobanned from IRC

The head DM for our PW has been autobanned from the neverwinterconnections IRC. We're guessing it has something to do with too many reconnect attempts in too short a period, since his wife also uses IRC, and their ISP is substandard.

Its been a week or so now and we've emailed, and had people hanging out in the #Admin channel, but have yet to get a response anywhere.

How do we get him unbanned?
