One of the useful things about using a common setting (such as the Forgotten Realms) is that PCs can be "portable" between games with different DMs. You can achieve this either directly through local vault play, or get similar results with a server vault PC at the appropriate level of your "true" PC. At least in my view, if the PC you want to run is level 3, and the server vault specifies that, you can recreate the PC and still have reasonable continuity. Direct continuity may be lacking, but at least you can come up with a consistent story for your character, filling in the gaps yourself. I do that with the (very limited) single-player module runs that I do, which gives me more satisfacation than just firing up a new or "rerun" PC every time. I've been fortunate enough to have been in several excellent limited-run campaigns on NWC, but in each case the settings have been unique, so the PCs never get used again. I don't mind, but it's nice when you can keep a character's story alive over time.

I prefer campaigns for both dming and playing because I like to see my character, the players characters, and the npcs grow through rping. I also like basing the story on the players actions, something you can only do when dming a campaign.

I like both one-shots and campaigns. What I've really missed sofar is short campaigns of 4 or 5 sessions, which is what I really prefer. My experience with one-shots is that they tend to be too short and tend to become hurried near the end. The problem with campaigns is the entire cast gradually changing over time.

I prefer campaigns over one-shots both as a player and as a DM. In one-shots character development (personality-wise) is lite and there is little time for truly memorable roleplay. Also I enjoy the unrushed, natural pace of the campaign over the artificial one in one-shots. Also campaigns provide more immersion as players get truly attached to their characters, and in a long running campaign every magical item, every scar and burn have their respective stories to tell. However one-shots are fun as well and can have some excellent roleplay in them. And one-shots also have their use. They are great for meeting new players and DMs (and for looking for suitable ones for a campaign)and they are needed for new or/and busy players. I am working on starting to run a campaign but I do hope I'll have time to run some one-shots as a community service. In the right company they can be as much fun.
