Yeah, it's funny because they mean it. It's hysterical!

I found it hysterical as well...but I also had some dealings with this in the past. Keep in mind that in college I played PnP and I also belonged to the SCA. If people were to worry about any group...I'd lean more towards the SCA since we did actually engage in combat. During my last years in college I somehow got elected senator of the student council. One of our jobs was to allocate funds and space to clubs. Some of the people who played PnP wanted a place to be able to play and not get hassled. So they formed a club. Under college rules, if you have 12 members and don't engage in anything illegal - you got yourself and official club. These guys had more then 12 people and all they did was play PnP and consume lots of snacks and sodas. Another fellow senator brought out all this data on how people kill themselves after playing these games. She had about 30 pages of data on this, she passed it to everyone. I personally got a good kick out of it. Since I knew they met the college's requirment that she didn't have any chance of stopping them. But still I pointed out that more people have killed themselves imitating movies and tv - and we haven't banned those yet. Needless to say they got their club and nobody died as a result. Not knowing too much about the christian faith (being jewish) I can't comment on the religous aspect of playing. But the comic seemed to imply that any kind of roleplaying could lead to bad things. Does that mean christians don't perform in plays as well?

God moves in mysterious ways, his wonders to perform. Years ago I was sucked into the black depths of roleplaying, and thanks to this thread, I've seen the light at last! Praise the Lord, hallelujah! Repent, all ye sinners, cease your meddling in this depravity that is Dungeons and Dragons, and truly the Lord Jesus will forgive you... Ooops sorry about that, don't quite know what came over me there. Guess there's some aspects of a Christian upbringing that even a hardened roleplayer like me can't quite shake off . (Edit: just so's you know where I'm coming from, I got given the whole "The devil will take you if you play that game" speech from my mother when I was a teenager. I do realise that not all Christians share this view of D&D, and am only taking a pop at those that do, not at Christians in general!) Personally, I'd rate some of Terry Pratchett's ideas concerning magic, religion and the nature of the universe to be more of a threat than playing D&D! However: "the Dungeon Master (DM) demands an all-encompassing and total loyalty, control and allegiance." Hmm, y'know, they could have a point after all... --StarStuff

Ah yes, the (in)famous Chick tract... My first thought whenever I see this is: Who would play with a DM that so easily kills off players? She is harsh! Let us not forget that this really isn't something that can be attributed to one particular religion, but to a small segment of one. I think we all know that people, regardless of their faith, can be very close-minded and unfair. *Ochobee casts Empowered Flame Retardant on this thread*

| Amen, Brotha Ochobee! It's sort of spooky. I didn't play PnP, but I know a few people that did. It was creepy to hear what their parents thought of their "hobby" and to think of how many of them were sneaking around to play. It was as if sex, drugs and drinking was OK, but by all that is holy DO NOT PLAY D&D!! Very strange. In any event I would agree that plenty of other "pursuits" are much worse for people of ALL ages and leave it at that. "Tom: No Marcie, don't change the light bulb with your mouth!" Sorry, but that line just cracked me up!! - J'Dai

This kind of nonsense thought has been around since the early 80s. Very little evolves in the minds of fanatics. I remember a woman, wearing a genuine fur coat, telling me the game was evil. I was young at the time, else I'd have assailed her little ego over her choice of coats.

| Ah, and then there is a part in the Bible(I don't remember where, but Heinlein's "Stanger in a Strange Land" brought it up) where a father was willing to give his two daughters to a crowd of men for them to do as they please if they would not knock on his door wanting to talk to J.C. There is a great deal of wickedness espoused in the Bible. One only need not be so rutted in its "glory."

*stands on soapbox* It is a pity that the likes of this individual find sufficient others who are unwilling or unable to formulate their own opinions. Instead they just regurgitate what they have been spoon fed, propogating predujice, intolerance, and fanatacism. Boo Hiss, mr. Chick, you are doing nothing to help the people of this world, live together. *massively cut down rant, provoked by reading some of his tracts* Second link, the parody, is excellent by the way - really enjoyed that one.

Extreme fanatics exist in all religions This guy is no better than one step away from Bin Laden. Just remember that there's always a few crazy fanatics in every religion, and they tend to give the normal rank and file a bad name. This holds true with games too, most people who play aren't the "off the deep end" folks, we just play to talk with friends and tell a story. Again, the extreme members are forming the image of the whole. I wonder if anyone ever pointed out to him that more wars have been fought, more people have died, more injustice has been imposed, and more evil has been done "in the name of god" than any nation has ever done alone (certainly more than any game). Note: I'm not saying that god or religion are bad- I believe that they can be good, just that there are bad people who use it as a shield for their actions. Edit postscript: I don't think the people (including this guy) who quote bible verses verbatim understand that the text was translated several times to arrive at English- and as such, a verbatim and literal translation is inherently flawed. Learn to read the language it was written in first, then read the untranslated version -Lew

At first I thought this was pretty funny, especialy the comic. I've been dealing with this all my life, so it's nice to be able to sit around and laugh at it.... Then I made the mistake of reading other parts of that site, like the zillion page long article "Should Christians Play D and D." Now I'm just cheesed off. I think reading this stuff has a better chance of causing me to commit murder then any game.... Thankfully, I stopped reading before it was too late. Phew -Dewar

| Actually, the men wanted to speak with (or perhaps attack or rape? Not to clear) a visitor to the town. Since the owner of the house had already promissed hospitality to the traveller, he handed his daughters over to the crowd instead. I believe that this is in Judges, but I'm not entirely sure about that. Either way, while I'm not a Christian, I would highly suggest that this discussion doesn't drift from Chick to the Bible...I'd hardly say that the book supports the man.
