DMing Resources: For the New and Old

An attempt to help new NWN DMs and experienced DMs with finding pre-created DMable modules, resources and tips.

I hope to keep this list clean of discussion, so that DMs can find their way through the links as quickly as possible. I.e. add new modules for the pre-created module lists rather to arawen's threads than to this.

Also if a link is broken or there is a link to be added, let me know and I'll edit my posts to keep all the links on similar topics together.

Pre-created DMable Modules

Here is a list of pre-created DMable modules for download. They are mostly references to several great threads started by Arawen.

DM Friendly Campaign Modules
"These campaign modules come with DM notes, DMFI DM tools and can be DMed live with no scripted PCs. Campaign modules usually take more than one session of play to complete."
http://www.neverwinterconnections.com/forums/index.cfm/fuseaction/viewmessages/id/5771/guildid/0.htm

DM Friendly Team Combat Modules
"These modules emphasize Team Combat. Though scripted, they come with DM documentation."
http://www.neverwinterconnections.com/forums/index.cfm/fuseaction/viewmessages/id/5772/guildid/0.htm

DM Friendly One-Shot Modules
"These modules come with complete DM guides, DMFI DM tools, and have the capacity to be DMed live with no scripted PCs. The players should be able to complete these modules in one night/session."
http://www.neverwinterconnections.com/forums/index.cfm/fuseaction/viewmessages/id/5770/guildid/0.htm

Scripted Modules with DM guides
"These modules are designed to be run as scripted modules, though the guides allow DMs add atmosphere, possess NPCs after scripted conversations are over, and enhance combat."
http://www.neverwinterconnections.com/forums/index.cfm/fuseaction/viewmessages/id/5773/guildid/0.htm

DMFI list on the nwvault
Several of the modules above also appear in this list, but Arawen expanded the DMFI page on the NWVault.

DMing Tutorials

This post contains helpful links to guides and tips for those who want to start DMing, or those who wish to expand their DMing skills.

Becoming a DM
Bioware wednesday, a nice overview by Arawen Silverstar, for those considering to start DMing. Contains several links to resources below.

Clean list of DM Tips
http://nwn.bioware.com/forums/viewtopic.html?topic=336607&forum=45

Basic Skills Needed
As from my experience, only a few things are really needed for a basic (pre-made) adventure:

- Know how to possess NPCs
- Know how to shout/tell/talk
- Know how to go/jump to locations
- Know how to create and limbo NPCs
- Know how to use the DMFI dicebag
- Know the plot outline
- Be confident of yourself

With the above you can interact with the players through NPCs, you can tell a story, you can add/remove NPCs, and you can roll skill checks for players (and you can even let them roll their checks, and you only have to do the tells.)

DM101 and DM102 Classes
The Fleet Street DMs occassionally schedule DM101 and DM102 classes on NWConnections to introduce and teach new DMs into the wonderful world of a DM. You can find them in the regular NWC Scheduled games lists. See also this forum:
http://www.neverwinterconnections.com/forums/index.cfm/fuseaction/viewthreads/id/34.htm

The DM101 class teaches you the first basics of DMing and the DM Client interface. Part of the DM101 class are (from my memory):
- What the creator is and how to use it
- What the chooser is and how to use it
- Possessing and controlling NPCs
- Jumping around as DM

The DM102 class, which has advances your skills as DM, focusses more on the story telling aspect of DMing. Content of this class:

DMFI 101 Self Study
Carlo One has worked very hard on a DMFI tutorial module, which can be found with this link. It explains the basic DMing process and the DMFI wands and widgets through a self-study tutorial module. A great way into the many possibilities of the DMFI wands.

Building DM modules & DM Tools

DMFI tools (DM Friendly Initiative)
Known best for their DM widgets, the DMFI also have several tips on how to create and document modules, to make them usuable for DMs. No DM module can go without the DMFI widgets, which gives DMs access to a library of VFXs, SFXs, afflictions (poisons, diseases, blindness effects), expanded NPC and environmental control, etc.

Rest Toggle Widget

Dungeon Master Base Module
Dungajin produced a combination of the most popular and well used ruleset modifications used in DM’d multi-player gaming along with a colourful Adventure Staging Area. An excellent start for your new DM modules.

Centralized DMFI resource links

Considering that this topic is around 5 years old, in case people are looking at NWC for the first time for DMing resources, here are some centralized DM-Friendly links:

DMFI guild (has comprehensive links to DMing resources): http://nwn.bioware.com/guilds_registry/viewguild.html?displaydesc=1&gid=20

DMFI webpage (has links to articles and other DMing resources): http://dmfi.slightlysilly.net/index.php

DM-friendly modules for NWN: http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=Modules.DMFM

DM friendly modules for NWN2: http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=NWN2ModulesEnglish.DMFM

The DMFI 101 (NWN) and DM 101 (NWN2) DM training mods can be found under their respective DM-Friendly lists.
