Moristin Flomen
Moristin was found as the only survivor in the burning wreckage of a caravan by a young student of the arcane arts, Gelion, later arch-mage of Rowanon. Gelion was a part of a small expedition of royal guards and paladins who had been sent our to investigate reports of orcish activity in the countryside to the south of the city. When they encountered the obliterated caravan, there could be little doubt that orcs had been at work. With ferocity uncommon even among their kind, the orcs seemed to have systematically scoured and burned every wagon in the caravan. It was only by a fortunate happenstance that Gelion found the month-old child who was sitting in a shrub a few yards from the wreckage. Gelion and the paladins did marvel at the child when they saw him, for he sat in the midst of a thorny bush, not far from the smoking ruins of the caravan, and did not utter a sound. Nigh invisible, he was, as he sat there, his skin and hair almost blending with the surroundings. He was wrapped in a blanket of strange cloth which also blended in with the environment in a strange manner. Gelion bent down and picked up the boy, who looked deep into Gelion's eyes without a sound. Almost frightened by the child's distance to the carnage around him, Gelion entrusted him to the royal paladins for the journey home. Little evidence of what had happened was found from the search of the site. Many corpses, burned beyond recognition, were found, but no clues as to why the caravan had been attacked in this manner. It was not carrying valuable goods, so the orcs' attack upon it appeared all the more wanton and meaningless. Yet, Gelion saw that there was a method to the orcs' madness. Their traces implied they had been searching for something. The only clue to the identity of anyone in the caravan was a silver locket adorned with greenstone gems found on one of the bodies, inside carrying the inscription "I. Flomen". Gelion passed this name on to the mysterious child, and himself minted him the first name Moristin, meaning "silent watcher". Gelion became Moristin's foster father and started to instruct him in the arts of magic. Moristin proved to be a very attentive, if quiet, student, taking in everything Gelion could teach with great attention. Meanwhile, the boy's talent of remaining unseen seemed to grow naturally and soon he found that he often unintentionally even startled his foster father by emerging from some unexpected shadow or corner. When Gelion became archmage under Lord Ilmen, he arranged a position for Moristin in the lord's network of spies known as The Order, for the young man seemed to harbour a natural talent for the sort of activity. Not only did he often remain unseen and unheard, even when not intending to, but his senses were always vigilant, taking in the most subtle of details that would have passed most everyone by unnoticed. And indeed, these qualities served Moristin very well in the ranks of the royal spies, and soon he found himself in charge of the whole network, as spymaster, directly subordinated to Lord Ilmen. Gelion the archmage remains both a father figure and a close friend to Moristin. At times he wonders who his real parents were and think about the mystery surrounding his discovery, but most often he is content with his place, and the new family he has found in Lord Ilmen's court and his network of cloaks.
