A.D.A.M. is a prototype, sentient robot that has recently "awakened" to find himself in the company of a very mechanically minded group of gnomes. They had apparently found A.D.A.M. while following a "shooting star," and while tinkering with his parts, accidentally reactivated him.
In truth A.D.A.M. is not the "intelligent golem" that the gnomes believe him to be, nor did he come down from a falling star. The "falling star" was a space-faring craft that had suffered damage and been pulled into the world's gravity well. The resulting reentry heat, combined with the crash landing impact, blasted virtually the entire craft, including its occupants, into dust. Built to withstand extreme heat, and located in the relatively well shielded mid-section of the ship, A.D.A.M. survived the landing, though only barely. Had the gnomes not found him when they did, his systems would have ceased to function at all.
He has had little exposure to people beyond the gnomes that found him, and does not yet mimic well the subtleties of human interaction, though his programming keeps him polite...mostly.
A.D.A.M. is still in disrepair, having suffered great damage to his memory banks and most of his major internal devices. He retains no knowledge of his past or his purpose, and has recently left the gnomes to pursue raw data that can only be found in the outside world. A.D.A.M. is surveying the land and recording the history that has passed during his slumber.
His sentience lends itself to a faint glimmer of a personality, though even that program is no longer functioning properly. Perhaps time, maintenance, and the ethereal quality that defines a robot's endless patience will bring him closer to what he once was. Though he is neutral (being unfamiliar with terms of good, evil, law, or chaos) A.D.A.M. will defend those that he identifies as "in need" with a ferocity that belies his peaceful nature.
The only clue to A.D.A.M.'s original purpose is the battered scythe he carries, which is adorned with strange markings and crafted from mysterious metals.
