Jak DeKoln was born into a state of semi-nobility, the bastard son of Valio DeKoln, a wealthy textiles merchant. Spending the earlier portion of his childhood as the unwanted black sheep of the family, Jak nevertheless displayed an optimistic, perhaps flippant streak when confronted with the elitist sneers that many others turned his way.
However, it was not to last. When Jak was sixteen, one of his fathers business associates voiced his thoughts on Jak's lineage. Jak replied by punching him in the face. A brawl between bodyguards ensued which inadvertantly cost the life of one of his younger (substantialy more legitimate) brothers. Subsequently, Jak was disowned, stripped of the family name and banished, as his Father finally got an excuse to rid the family of him.
Cynical, yet open in his manner, few ever suspect Jak of having such a sordid past. Although his heart is, ultimately, on the side of good, Jak is a chaotic soul, with a strong distrust for authority in all its forms. Money and property are only as good as those who have them... If Jak feels that a man does not deserve his wealth, he will have no moral objection to robbing him blind.
For obvious reasons, Jak prefers not to talk about his past. He openly declares it a finished matter, that he has nothing to prove to anyone. His actions, his constant need to be the center of attention and his voracious wanderlust tell a different story.
In and out of both urban areas and the open country, Jak has sought to become his namesake, the Jack of all trades. Part actor, part bandit, part charming gallant, he slips into whatever role he feels will grant him the most attention and praise. He is a flippant and carefree man, for the most part, keeping his problems to himself, holding a certain pride in his ability to endure and laugh at all the world can throw at him.
Knights in shining armor are dumb, glorified would-be heroes. That said, being a hero wouldn't be all that bad... Somebody's got to save the world every now and again. I wonder what the pay is like?
It's been a long time since Jak started out. If you believe a word he says, he has walked in the abyss, defeated liches in mortal combat, stopped time, burned down an ancient elven forest, helped stop a frost giant army, adopted a half-demon daghter and fought side by side with Baal.
How much of this rubbish is actually TRUE is up to the listeners gullibility... But there is a certain way to Jak's manner that hints that perhaps not all of his tales are as false as they seem...
