Earilis originally hailed from the Elvin city of Tainia at the peak of Zuras Mountain, where he had spent his younger days studying the magics of the Zuran elves, who, being strict worshippers of Azuth, are very disciplined and systematic with their magic. Zuran elves are distant unwinged cousins of the Avariel. The city of Tiania itself is upheld upon six mithral pillars and cloaked by the magic of the Zuran priests, and many unknowing travelers of Zuras Mountain pass it by every day without ever knowing of its existence. This, of course, is due to the Zuran elves' great distrust of outside societies.
When Earilis came of age to marry, he was betrothed to a younger elf, Naishana of neighboring family Zorinth. The two were very much in love--she being already an adept mage, and he being destined for priesthood, the two would have make a very noble match.
Earilis would not be so fortunate as to enjoy a quaint and undisturbed life, however.
While on a peaceful stroll with his beloved Naishana through the forest near Zuras Mountain, the two came upon a small caravan of merchants besieged by a band of goblins. The merchants were vastly outnumbered and began to fall one by one under the onslaught. Earilis, although he was taught since childhood never to interfere with outsiders nor make his presence known, watched the men get slain with great heartache and ran into the fray casting the most powerful spells in he repertoire against the goblin horde. Naishana exercised better judgment, remaining hidden in the shadows. With Earilis's help, the caravan was able to defend against the goblin horde, but more than half of the merchants were slain.
Earilis offered to bring the wounded merchants back to Tiania so that they can be healed, but in shock and a bit of fear, they refused. After the battle, Naishana, whose ideals were much different from Earilis's, argued with him about exposing himself to the filthy and uncivilized outside races, and Earilis realized at that moment how selfish and apathetic to the needs of others his people were.
Earilis could never look at Naishana again, and he broke off the engagement soon after. Soon, rumors had spred around all the human villages of Zuras Mountain that there was a hidden Elven city somewhere in the cliffs, and hundreds of ambitious adventurers swarmed to Zuras to investigate.
Although Naishana never told the elders what Earilis had done, Earilis voluntarily confessed his actions and challenged the Elvin court that he had acted with righteousness and moral judgment. Although a few of the Zuran elves commended him for his bravery, most of them, including Naishana, reprimanded him for exposing their entire city to outsiders.
The elders held a meeting to decide whether they should banish Earilis from Tiania, but Earilis did not wait to hear their verdict. In disgust and moral outrage, Earilis left the city of Tainia, without saying goodbye to his would be bride, vowing never to return.
Earilis found a home in the forest near the village of Friarhand in Hand valley, converted to the worship of Silvanus, the god of nature, and has lived near the outskirts of Friarhand ever since, filling the role of the local Ranger.
Although Earilis was trained for many years in the arcane arts of his people, he has consciously forced himself to forget them, refusing to wield the magics of the Zuran elves. Instead, he spends most of his days training his hunting and outdoorsman skills. He and the other local hunters support themsevles by hunting elk responsibly and living off the land.
Earilis is generally very kind and upstanding. He never fails to help anyone in need and often volunteers to carry the burdens of others. Still, he can be quite apprehensive on a bad day, inwardly dreading that his past will inevitably catch up to him.
