Gaul

Gaul was the product of an unusual pair, the child of two slaves in the minor kingdom of Outreach. Just outside the known lands, on the other side of the Spine of the World, Outreach was a kingdom ruled by an iron fist. Its criminals were punished with a lifetime of slavery, but as it grew, the king made the lines of the law blur to suit his needs. Finding solace in each other's company, a human female and orcish male coupled and formed a secret union. Before long, the female realized she was pregnant with her orc lover's child. In Outreach however, slaves were not allowed children, as the pregnancy prevented slave women from doing their work. Child bearing slaves were executed, along with their partners. Realizing the need to escape, the two formulated an escape plan to slip to freedom by crossing the Spine of the World mountains. Under cover of night, they broke from the slave pens and raced for the mountains. Outreach though, was nothing else if not efficient at keeping what it had. Within hours, the two slaves were being tracked by the kingdom's slave catchers. Hearing the dogs on their heels, Gaul's father sent his child's mother ahead of him and nobly sacrificed himself to the mercies of the hunters, who dragged him back to the slave life.

Gaul's mother escaped through the Spine of the World, if only barely. Not even speaking the language of the people on the other side, she was taken in by a monk's temple. Feeding and clothing the woman, the monks nursed her back to health and through her pregnancy, but were shocked to discover that she bore an orc child. Lacking the prejudices of the more civilized kingdoms, the monks raised Gaul as their own, along with his mother. He was sworn into the monastic order at his coming of age at 18, and found a love for the pursuit of knowledge. Scouring the temple for ancient scrolls and books, Gaul soaked up every scrap of knowledge he could find. He trained rigorously in the fighting arts, and put his knowledge to good use. Teaching himself many languages, translating formerly unreadable texts, and learning forbidden arts through the writings of long-dead masters, Gaul felt himself outgrow the confines of the temple. Seeking more and finding less, Gaul decided to venture out into the world he knew about only from his books. Much to the protests of his mother and fellow monks, Gaul gathered his scripts and belongings, and departed his only home. Realizing that they could not stop him, the monks gifted him with the mark of an initiate, a katana blade. Sadly, they released their initiate into civilization for his quest for knowledge, with a prayer for his safety against the prejudices of those outside of the order.
