What usually happens when the sailors make their usual voyages across the seas and meet with the fairer sex in exotic, foreign locales?
Oliar is what sometimes happens. Upon a few return voyage, Pa Bernham realized the problem he had caused, but as the young woman, Soraya Xaxa, didn't seem to mind too much, especially with gifts he brought back on his yearly voyage for his growing son. It was a fine arrangement for him.
Until Soraya died. Pa knew that this could be a problem, but decided to take responsibility, bringing a young Oliar back with him.
Most of the people Pa could trust, he told the secret of Oliar's birth. Anybody who might cast a sideways glance at him, or his illegitimate child, he simply said a half-truth: he knew the child's mother, who had died, and decided to do what he could for the boy, as he showed promise.
Because of that lie, Oliar had to show promise. He had started training to be a hunter as it was, but now he had no choice but to be the best he could. No more mediocrity...he had to push himself hard. He strove to surpass the strength of his half-brothers. He strove to surpass the cunning wrestling techniques of his peers. He grew to run faster and swim longer than anybody he knew, all because of his father's lie.
Now that he's nearly finished growing, wondering what he'll do with his life now, he occassionally wonders why he did it. Did he strive to keep his father's lie? Or did he strive to earn enough of his father's pride so that he would proud to publicly proclaim him as a son? Or did he do it to help forget his mother's passing, the only parent who had been in his life as constant? He never really answered these personal questions...and, due to his father's need to lie to most of the world, he had no choice but to lack council.
Regardless, he has the skills. Now he just needs new opponents to pit himself against.
