Sorrow

Sorrow remembered little about her early years. If she only remembered more, then she may not be the way she is today. It had been an autumn day when she was discovered wandering alone through dangerous territories, a mere child barely old enough to build a fire, let alone catch a meal. The horrible truth behind the childs solitude had been due to a small brigand of thieves. They had attacked Sorrow's parents and left the girl alone... miles from anywhere... in the dark. It had been four days until the farmer found her and took her in. The girl did not utter a word for months, hence her name, but deep within she knew her name. Her name was Taryn.... Taryn.... something. She remembered small details, like brief flashes of another, distant life. She remembered big baths made of marble, and maids with giant silver trays full of sweet treats. Her father had been important in some way, wealthy, but all of that was gone.

Years passed and Sorrow grew into a young girl. The farmer sent her on her way as soon as she was old enough to seek employment and fend for herself, so she was once more sent out alone... in the dark.

Various jobs came and various jobs went, as more and more employers discovered that this divinely beautiful girl had an ugly, spiteful and venemous tongue. The hatred within and the anger supressed, combined to turn the girl into a devious and uncaring opportunist. However, none of her jobs could have prepared her for the one which would change her from spiteful to deadly. She was a 'dancer', hired for 'special clients' who were almost certainly rich and equally as corrupt as the money they lavished upon Taryn. She had reclaimed her childhood name for the sake of performing, and in certain circles her name was infamous. Taryn the dancer. Taryn the feisty. Taryn the whore. So little surprise that, after she slit the throat of one of her clients for a large sum of money, she immediately changed her name back to Sorrow. Though an evil act, the murder of a crimelord was not her biggest mistake. It was murdering the man who paid her that put the contract on her head. No-one kills an assassins guild member and gets away with it, especially not one that knows many of the assassins faces, daytime jobs, addresses and family members. No! Sorrow's life was seriously in danger.... so she fled.... alone... and in the dark.

It was around this time she had met Clarissa, a vile woman with a tongue sharper than her blade, and Manny the paladin who was so easy to bewilder and embaress. They had seemed like worthy friends, at one time. But Sorrow found it hard to make friends. Friends were a distraction from her focus, so one night while they slept, she left... alone... and in the dark.

Sorrow had been alone for what seemed like an eternity. She hated the solitude, but embraced it as something she could trust in. The hunt for her parents killers had proven fruitless, searching from town to town, never finding anything new. She eventually found a town where she felt that she could start afresh. A stocky human named Jareth took a shine to Sorrows shyness and courted her nightly. The nastier side of Sorrow almost vanished during those days as she had been introduced to a completely new sensation, that of contentment. But, alas, poor Sorrow knew that it couldn't possibly last. One night, a bar-room brawl broke out. A Blackguard had his eye upon Sorrow and made several lewd suggestions. Each one she fended off with a glib, but out of practice, tongue. It wasn't until she felt the blackguards fist almost crush her skull in one precise blow that she realised what was about to happen. Unable to react quickly enough to stop him, Sorrow watched Jareth stride up to the Blackguard and strike him.

Now Sorrow sits, as she did in those days gone by, watching the sunset to her sad solemn flute. One day she will recover her parents fortune, and one day she will avenge her betrothed, but first she needed allies..... Tilverton. A nearby signpost said Tilverton. Silently, Sorrow turned purposefully. "I wonder what I will find in Tilverton." she mused, shortly before meeting up with Clarissa and Manny once more. Ah, but this time they had new friends. A girl called Jena, sweet and naive and quite plausibly corruptible in Sorrows eyes. And Jagan, another Paladin at the brink of falling from grace. How interesting. How fun. How Sorrow. And so she joined them all in a quest she knew nothing about, plotting, manipulating and belittling those around her. But as she walked she thought to herself. "Something has changed."

And thus she walked..... surrounded by allies...... and the sun was high in the sky.
