Nathan Kane stands 6'0" weighing a muscular 225lbs. His jet-black unkempt hair is offset by two cold-blue eyes and a firm, square jaw. He has seen 40 summers. His countenance appears dark, foreboding, and is rarely - if ever - brightened by a smile. His eyes look as if he has not had enough rest, and his shoulders, while broad and firm yet, seem to carry the weight of the world on them.
Nathan Kane is a man of many talents: burglar, strongarm, lawman, soldier, lorekeeper, and healer. His varied skills come from a lifetime spent in many different locales and worlds.
Nathan has been on three different worlds in his short life, both transitions being the result of being targeted by mages seeking to remove him. This wouldn't have been so bad, or certainly less of an issue to deal with, if he had not fallen in love with a young adventurer named Lillinah shortly before his last unfortunate trip across the planes.
Coming to Oerth, her name a dying scream on his lips, he sought every conceivable method to open a gate back to his love, using the amulet she had bequeathed to him as a focus. He fell in with a stalwart band of adventurers, most notably the elven mage Ktonos, who promised to help lead him to a gate that could reunite him with Lilli.
However, he was unprepared for the madness that awaited them in the depths of the Peak. An alienist mage, tampering with forces beyond the ken of mortals, sought to open a gate to an unnamed dimension and bring its weird, deadly, insane inhabitants to the universe. Many times throughout the journey, Nathan was haunted by visions of Lillinah. At first, he charged off, trying anything possible to 'save' his Lilli - but then he realized that it was just an illusion, that the madness of the place was playing against his mind. This idea was reinforced by other party members, urging him to be calm and restrained.
It all fell apart when the alienist was defeated and the gate laid bare. His amulet glowing, Lillinah - the real Lillinah - was just about to step into his waiting arms when the Vast Gate was refocused. Her scream of torment and last words to Nathan burned into the core of his being, and it was all he could do not to lose his mind in a blood-spattering wave of carnage against his companions. After a while, the shock wore off, but Nathan was changed, mentally and emotionally.
After the events at Firestorm Peak, and the loss of his beloved Lillinah's amulet, Nathan separated from the group. He left word with Purple where he could be contacted in the event that she found conclusive evidence of the location of Acererak, because he would not turn his back on a friend.
He returned to the Duergar kingdom under Firestorm Peak for a time, learning much and honing his skills in their community. But even that could not stop his memories, and he longed for other places in which to lose himself. Leaving the Duergar behind, he journied long and far, finding all kinds of work as a sellsword and brigand, including a few years as First Mate on an infamous pirate vessel.
But always there remained the shattered memories ... Lillinah's last cry to him as she faded back into the Vast Gate foremost among them.
It was his fault. He had not trusted the other visions of her in the depths of Firestorm Peak. It was his lack of faith in her that severed them for all time. Circumstances and the madness of the time in Firestorm Peak aside, it was his fault for failing to trust in their love.
Now a haunted, dark man, Nathan longs for any adventure that will keep his mind off of his past. He has tried to drown his sorrows in drink, the companionship of other women, and in the death he brings to his foes in combat - nothing has been able to fill the massive, gaping hole in his heart.
