Yuriko "Amisa" Michihiro
Once long ago, there was a powerful Wu-Jin named Iwahara Michihiro who allied himself with the rebelling faction within The Empire. It said that the only thing that matched his power was his cruelty. He enjoyed studying living specimens in the name of knowledge. However, he never concerned himself with their physical and mental well-being. Thus his experience often devolved into a form of torture. In the final days of the rebellion, it was becoming clear that they had failed. He knew that he would be killed once the war hero, Dragon and his small army pushed through the last defenses. Iwahara refused to let all his work be for nothing. He came up with a plan to ensure the survival of his power. He took one of his female prisoners and slept with her. He made sure that her mind was so warped that any thought of suicide or confession was suppressed. He transferred his essence into her body hoping that it would be absorbed by the unborn child. He then let the woman go. Iwahara faced his enemies with all the confidence in the world; despite the fact that he knew a beggar with a rusty knife could kill him now. In his dying breath, he taunted his foes admitting that he expected them to win and that he ensured the survival of his essence. This proved to be his greatest mistake. One of Dragon's allies, a cleric, cursed Iwahara's bloodline. From that moment onward, anyone with even a hint of his blood would bear a serpent birthmark on their bodies. This mark of shame would never disappear until one of the Michihiro clan repaid their debt to the Empire or all of them were slain. Throughout the years, most common folks tried their best to forget about Iwahara Michihiro. Many even think that his dying words were just the ramblings of a madman. Still, some believe that his heirs survived and that they would return to finish what he started. The truth is his heirs did survive. His first son found that he had some of his memories inside his mind as well as a great deal of power. However, the son wasn't stupid. He decided to push things a step further. He would live a relatively normal life and have a child of his own. Then he would perform the infusion technique on the child, giving that child his own strength as well as Iwahara's. This process continued throughout the years, sometimes a Michihiro would be discovered and killed but the bloodline survived as a whole. However, the time came when the next heir was not a boy, but a girl. Yuriko was the first daughter in a chain of sons. Her mother, Matsuki Amisa, had met her father, Abusuka "Hirofumi" in the tea house she worked at. He was always so kind to her and she wound up being swept off her feet. However, it wasn't until their wedding night that she admitted to being "unable" to bear a child. She had a lover before Abusuka and lost baby long before birth. Abusuka silently wanted to kill her but he pretended to be kind. His birthmark was rather well concealed behind his right ear and he had already gone this far with Matsuki. He didn't want to start over again with another woman. Unlike others heirs, he didn't sacrifice any of his energy to Matsuki's womb. He waited to see if a child would be born and against all odds, Yuriko survived the pregnancy. Abusuka was very upset over the prospect of a female heir. He often kept his distance from her as he was trying to find another way around this problem. During his indecision, Matsuki raised her daughter with love and affection. She prayed daily to all the spirits thanking them for blessing her with a child. Matsuki noticed early on that she had a strange birthmark on her right shoulder and pointed it out to Abusuka. He harshly brushed off her inquiries leaving doubt in Matsuki's mind. She began to research the meaning of the birthmark and discovered the truth. Still, she kept her discovery a secret. She wanted to believe that Abusuka was different from Iwahara. However, the more she watched Abusuka, the more she despised him. He was planning to wait until their daughter turned sixteen before performing the ritual that would give Yuriko the knowledge, power and bloodlust of her ancestors. He also felt that he should wipe her memories before hand so that her 'weakness' wasn't past down the line. On her 16th birthday, Abusuka sent his wife on a phony errand and began the painful process of removing her memories. Matsuki pretended to go on the errand but secretly re-entered the house after several moments. When she heard her daughter's scream of pain, she grabbed the nearest object she could find, a lantern and threw it at Abusuka. The lantern broke setting fire to the whole building. The farthest back Yuriko can remember is her sixteenth birthday. Yuriko's "first memory" was of a man draped in robes reaching out to her with a dagger in his hands. Her "second memory", is of the flames that threaten to engulf her. Her "third memory" was of a strange woman who ran through the flames and carried her out of the burning house. Yuriko and the woman escaped from the furious man who was desperately trying to put out the fire. When they had some time to the woman introduced herself as Matsuki Amisa. Matsuki told Yuriko that she was merely a traveling dancer who happened to be a family friend. Matsuki claimed that Yuriko's mother and father were killed in the blaze by the man who had stood in front of her. For the next two years, Matsuki would travel with Yuriko, teaching her the importance of beauty and kindness. She told Yuriko to take her family's name, Amisa. Finally, Matsuki told Yuriko that they would part. She said she would go back to make sure the man who destroyed Yuriko's family never harmed anyone again. Yuriko begged her not to go but Matsuki left anyway saying that Yuriko was 'like a daughter' to her now ...and she wanted to protect her new daughter. Yuriko continued to journey perfecting her skills as a dancer, praying that she would hear any word of Matsuki or the death of the man named Abusuka "Hirofumi". As a result of her experience, Yuriko has a fear of fire and distrusts men who conceal themselves. She has also developed a rather good singing voice and some magical talent. She prefers to worship the wind spirits over all the other elements. Matsuki told her that the serpent shaped birthmark on Yuriko's right shoulder meant "bad luck" and warned her that some people might try to harm her if they saw it. Yuriko won't willingly reveal the mark unless she completely trusts the person viewing it.
Still, the past...like many things, always has a way of haunting you. Slowly Yuriko began to discover the truth about her heritage and what the serpent shaped mark on her body truly meant. The truth nearly destroyed her caring spirit and she contemplated Seppuku. Instead, the young woman chose to flee. She sought out some escape from her current life. For this, she turned to magic. She attempted to create a portal off of her homeworld using several rare gems as conduits. Her attempt failed but the magical backlash was barely enough to attract the attention of the SpellJammer. She practically begged the captain to let her on his ship and was willing to pay everything she owned for fare. Thankfully, the captain was not cruel enough to take advantage of that...at least not immediately. When she heard of "The Great Archive", Yuriko believed that this should be her first destination in order to gain knowledge of a strange plane outside of her own.
