Nora was born as a slave. She does not remember her birth mother or father since they were separated in the slave stocks. However, at this stage of her life, she would refuse to even acknowledge their existence. Nora was always a unique slave. Although she followed her master's orders explicitly, she always watched her masters and tried to immitate them. She desired the control that a master wielded so effortlessly. She would watch her fellow slaves and find leverage over them. It did not matter if it was pure intimidation or blackmail, she controlled the other slaves. Worse still, whenever she was tortured, she showed no weakness. Her masters were unnerved by her resolve but afraid that killing her outright might start a rebellion in their own home. She was merely sold.
Each time Nora was sold, she would seize subtle control over her current master's slaves then be sold again. She was starting to get a reputation among slavers as difficult and many were more than happy to take her out of their misery. However, one man saw promise in her, Zanin Diams, a priest of Bane. He bought her for more than anyone believed she was worth and took her to his manor. He did something not even Nora expected, he treated her like a human being. Zanin did not do this out of the kindness of his heart. He did this because he saw a great potential in her that if nurtured could create a strong willed priestess of Bane.
Zanin could not be more right about his belief. Nora was so blindsided by this tactic, she decided to devote herself completely to Zanin and his god Bane. Nora began to view Zanin has her true father and the most important person in her life. Although on paper, Nora belonged to Zanin, anyone at least remotely familiar with the two knew that they had a father and daughter relationship. To say otherwise would be invoking the wrath of both of them. Even when Nora eventually learned that Zanin was simply using her for his own ends, she did not care. Nora would gladly be his pawn so long as he remained by her side.
However, Nora's happiness wouldn't last forever. Zanin was sent away from home on a mission for the church. He never explained the details to Nora and told her to safeguard his home until his return. Zanin never returned. Acolytes from the Temple of Bane came by several weeks later claiming that Zanin was dead. They would not tell Nora how or why but they said that all of his property, including her now belonged to the church. Nora was so distraught she refused to let them into the manor. She held them at bay with her magic for three days before she was overpowered. Although she was punished for her disobedience, many members of the church saw she was at least competent. They allowed her to live in the temple as an acolyte instead of a slave.
Nora was always loyal to Bane. She felt that by following his will, she could be closer to Zanin. However, the priests directly above her were another matter entirely. They saw her as a useful but expendable soldier and nothing else. She would never be given the chance to advance in the temple unless she did something extraordinary or took care of her doubters. It did not take much effort to convince the higher ups to grant her permission to travel the land. Many acolytes did temporarily leave their temples on personal missions in the hopes of appeasing Bane. It helped that some were secretly hoping she would die lost and forgotten.
On her own, Nora decided that her first order of business was to discover the truth of Zanin's demise. She promised herself and Bane that she would make the culprit pay dearly. However, the more she investigated, the more she thought Zanin's demise may have been exaggerated. If this was the truth and he was alive somewhere with no means to return, she would find him and together they would return to the temple and deal with the priests. Furthermore, she realized that she will eventually need to stand on her own two feet and claim a position of power. She is willing to wait for an opportunity to present itself.
Despite Nora's evil nature, she is not a fool. She understood the need for allies and tries hard not to burn all her bridges until she is prepared for the backlash. If someone choses to aid her in some capacity, she will be inclined to return the favor so long as it does not clash too much with her own goals. Likewise, if someone betrays her, she is inclined to make an example out of them through torture, death and undead reanimation.
