Cassie Ringtooth was a halfling girl born in Tenberry Shire. Much to the dismay of her mother, Cassie was the fifth child of nine children born into the Ringtooth family. Considering the size, Cassie could often sneak away from her parents and siblings very easily. The brown haired halfling spent the majority of her time at a cliffside along one of the island's many beaches. Her mind always wandered and she imagined what it would be like to travel beyond the island.
When she was 10, a terrible storm struck the island causing a bit of damage. The next day, Cassie snuck off to check the condition of her favorite spot. While exploring the region, she slipped on one of the wet rocks and fell down to a lower section of the cliff. Badly cut and bruised, she discovered the remains of a raft and the dead body of a human male. His head was cracked open which made any attempt to raise him futile.
From here, the story varies depending on who you ask. Some say the fall was so hard, Cassie struck her head against the rock. Others say she also found a bottle of ale with the man and started to drink it. There are also those who claim the shock of seeing someone dead was too much for the young girl and she lost her wits. Still, very few believe Cassie's version of the events.
Cassie spotted an elegant looking scimitar in the dead human's hand. She claimed to hear a voice coming from the weapon asking her to pick it up. Reluctantly, the young girl obeyed. The blade felt very heavy in her hands and she could barely lift it. Cassie found a path up the cliff and stumbled back into the shire, telling everyone about the human body and the speaking sword.
The halflings of the shire were skeptical of the story. Truth be told, if she had not dragged the sword back, many would not have believed her about the body. They found the human body and gave the man a proper burial along the beach. As for his possessions, only personal effects were buried with him. Cassie's parents tried to convince their daughter to give up the blade, but she adamantly refused. She claimed it was her best friend now and even gave it the name, Avir. Cassie was fortunate that her parents were too frenzied by her siblings to care too much.
Since then, Cassie has been undergoing a self-training regiment. She claims that Avir wants to explore every inch of the island and to do that, Cassie must become strong enough to wield Avir. The young halfling spent her time strengthening her body by running along the beach, picking up heavy rocks and keeping her balance when the fierce waves rolled inland.
Within several years, the halfling had greatly improved her reflexes. However, training alone meant nothing. She was still untested in true combat. Aiding in the eradication of the fire beetles was a step in the right direction, but Cassie had a long way to go. When the suggestion was made to send a group of adventurers to the Faerun mainland, Cassie jumped at the opportunity. Not only did she claim Avir wished to leave now, but she also wanted to fulfill her desire to explore.
